2 The Hope Soap : Club News ROTARY FOUNDATION POLIO PIG-O-METER POLIO $1, RYLA At our meeting last Wednesday (20 th ) we heard from Neil Jones, our District s Rotary Foundation Chair (pictured above with Amy Ford presenting our club with a banner to recognise us as the #3 club in the District for per capita Foundation donations). It is timely that we are all reminded of the great work of the Rotary Foundation and how we can all contribute. The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. The Rotary Foundation helps fund our humanitarian activities, from local service projects to global initiatives. Your club or district can apply for grants from the Foundation to invest in projects and provide scholarships. The Foundation also leads the charge on worldwide Rotary campaigns such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Rotarians and friends of Rotary support the Foundation s work through voluntary contributions. In addition to the money directed from our annual dues, all of us can contribute directly to the Rotary Foundation. Attached to this week s bulletin is a form allowing you to make donations in a number of ways including direct debit and credit card. If you would like, you can also nominate whether the money you donate is directed to the Annual Programs Fund or towards Polio Plus. Wanda has confirmed that we have one nomination (Alexa Deighton) for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) camp to be held in January. Applications are now closed AGM & PIZZA NIGHT Don t forget to mark your diaries for our AGM and Pizza Night which is on on Thursday 28 November. The night starts at 6:30pm and will be held at the Sanctuary Cove Golf Club. As the venue is inside the residential area of Sanctuary Cove, please RSVP to Sandy ASAP.

4 The Hope Soap : District News PHILLIPINES TYPHOON ASSISTANCE DISTRICT DIARY 01 DEC 08 DEC 09 JAN 12 JAN Kingscliff Triathlon RC of Tweed Heads South Community Christmas Carols RC of Burleigh Heads Antique, Collectibles & Book Fair RC of Palm Beach NOT A BAD MORNING S WORK Your help is urgently needed! Please donate directly to Rotary District 3860 Disaster Fund, see below - Calls have been received on how we can help our Rotarians in the Philippines providing relief. The most effective way is to send money direct to the area affected. District Governor Edgar Chiongbian can use the funds where they believe it is most effective. Food, water, medicines etc. are in great need and can be sourced from other parts of the Philippines. DG Chiongbian has provided the following account details through which Rotarians can send contributions to the areas in Tacloban and Northern Cebu that were hardest hit by the typhoon. Account Name: Rotary District 3860 Disaster Fund Bank: Bank of the Philippine Islands SWIFT Code: BOPIPHMM Account No.: Currency: Philippine Peso Branch: Mango Avenue, Cebu City Please note these funds are going direct to the Rotary District and not through The Rotary Foundation. Boonah Rotary held a fundraising event in Boonah High Street on Saturday morning in aid of ShelterBox and specifically to Typhoon Haiyan that struck the Philippines. The club set up a display with a Shelterbox and its contents along with pull up banners (promoting Boonah Rotary) and A frames (with posters promoting the fundraiser) and a display board (with photos taken in the previous 48 hours depicting the tragedy that exists in the wake of Haiyan and previous deployments of ShelterBoxes). In only four hours, $1,207 was donated by the Boonah community. This will buy one box and Boonah Rotary will buy a second one. The event was a major PR triumph. The idea of ShelterBoxes, the organisation and distribution of them and Rotary s part in it really struck a chord with the public. Rotary District 9640

5 The Hope Soap : World of Rotary TALKING ABOUT TOILETS By age 40, Jack Sim was a successful entrepreneur running 16 businesses. He had enough money to retire, so he started searching for a neglected cause to which he could devote his time and effort. Toilets. Realizing that people don t want to talk about toilets, he set about making the humble commode into a media darling, founding the World Toilet Organization in 2001 and holding a special day every year to draw attention to sanitation. This year, the United Nations voted to make World Toilet Day, 19 November, an official UN observance. Sim credits Rotary with helping him break the taboo around the subject. In October, his organization inducted Ron Denham, chair emeritus of the Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group, into its hall of fame. The honor recognizes the work Rotary and the action group have done to change behavior and improve sanitation. It is good to see Rotary being recognized for the impact we are having on people in the developing world, Denham said. But this award is a wake-up call as much as a recognition. No progress has been made toward the [UN s] Millennium Development Goal of increasing access to safe sanitation. We as Rotary members must shift our focus from water to water and sanitation. The Rotarian sat down with Sim, also known as Mr. Toilet, at the action group s World Water Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, in June and here are some of the things he had to say - Once you make people laugh, they will listen to you. I saw another person who did it very well: Mr. Condom from Thailand. He promoted the condom by making people laugh, so I did the same with toilets. Everybody has their personal toilet horror stories, whether about their travels or about their children. You just have to let the conversation flow naturally, and everybody will talk about toilets. In fact, once they feel it s a legitimate topic, they can t stop. More than 100 years ago, one of the first Rotary projects was to build a public toilet. Every Rotary member should know this story. When members do water and sanitation projects, at least 85 percent of them focus on water. But you cannot have clean water if people are still defecating into the river. A market-based solution is the most sustainable model. Instead of putting toilets in the ground and hoping people use them, if you invest this money in training people to set up a factory to produce toilets and train local ladies to sell toilets on commission, then you create jobs, you create entrepreneurship, and you deliver proper sanitation. Even after your investment is used up, the business continues to grow. Read the full story at Rotary International
