2 A word from Lucinda... On the 1st of April the new Carers (Scotland) Act 2016 was implemented meaning new rights and further support to enable carers to continue caring in good health whilst having a life outside of their caring role. Organisations in Dundee have been working hard for the last two years to prepare for this and you have also been involved in many discussions which have directly influenced how the Act will be implemented locally. We will continue to monitor progress and learn from this first year and look forward to hearing from you on how things are going. We have set the date for the AGM as the 27 September 2018 and more information will follow on what the programme will be for the day. In the meantime, we have been asking people what would be useful to them so if you have any ideas please phone the Centre and let us know. Young Carers Voice have been working hard over the past few months to make sure that young carers are aware of their rights under the new legislation by undertaking Roadshows in all the High Schools in the City. I wanted to take the opportunity to thank them for all their efforts in supporting us with this. We are, as always, looking forward to Carers Week in June and will be focusing our efforts on raising awareness of the Carers Act including in communities. We will also be launching a new website for carers and professionals and we will be keen to get your feedback and ideas on what else needs to be on it to support carers and their families. Finally, another reminder to complete your GDPR form and return it to continue to receive information from us. All the Best! We re looking for Peer Mentors Can you help mentor a young carer aged between 8 and 15? Can you offer support and guidance to enable them to achieve more? In return, we offer flexible opportunities, full training, full support and a matching process to ensure young carers and mentors have similar interests. If you are interested or would like further information please contact Katriona on or katriona.kelly@dundeecarerscentre.org.uk We look forward to hearing from you. Peer Mentor roles are subject to references and PVG checks.

Address... Date...
4 Carers (Scotland) Act 2016 What is the Carers (Scotland) Act? On 1 April this year, Scotland took a major step towards extending and enhancing the rights of unpaid carers with the introduction of the Carers (Scotland) Act The aim of the Act is to ensure that carers are better supported in their caring role, so that they can continue to care if they wish, and are able to do so in good health with a life alongside their caring responsibilities too. What does this mean for carers? In Dundee we want all carers to be supported if they need it therefore most services will continue to be available to access when you need support. This includes a wide variety of support, information and advice through Dundee Carers Centre and other local organisations in Dundee. In order to think about what would be helpful to you to continue caring and having a life outside your caring role you might be offered or can request an Adult Carers Support Plan or Young Carers Statement. What To Expect leaflet. Follow the link at the bottom of the opposite page to download. An Adult Carer Support Plan and a Young Carers statement sets out any needs you have and how they might be met and can help you to plan for the things that matter to you as a carer. The Dundee Adult Carer Support Plan is for carers who look after someone living in Dundee. If you are an unpaid carer and would like more information and advice about the range of supports available, please get in touch with us at Dundee Carers Centre If you feel you could benefit from having more planned support to help you in your caring role and would like to request an Adult Carer Support Plan, please contact the First Contact Team, Health and Social Care Partnership, on If you are a Young Carer, or a parent of Young Carer, and would like to find out more information on the Young Carer Statement you can contact Dundee Carers Centre, or you can also ask Guidance Staff or the Young Carer Co-Ordinator at the school you attend. If your Adult Carers Support Plan or Young Carers Statement identifies that there are supports that you would benefit from that aren t currently available and if you meet the eligibility threshold, you may be entitled to additional funding to meet your needs. You will be given options to arrange your support with the funding which will be discussed with you this is called self-directed support. Self-Directed Support Brokerage You may feel comfortable to plan and organise your own support. However, you may also prefer assistance to do this. Brokerage is an approach to support you to identify your health and social care needs and create a plan to say how you would like these to be met.
5 Our Self-directed Support Advisors Eileen Cairnie and Helen Harkness will listen to what is important to you and assist you to include these things in a plan for your support. There is no limit to their time and they can advise you at any stage of the support planning process to enable you to recognise ways of meeting your personal outcomes. Our Advisors have completed accredited brokerage training and are members of the National Brokerage Network. Learning & Development Eileen Cairnie Helen The person whom you care for may also have eligible health and social care needs and be interested in directing their own support in addition to the care which you provide. If they choose to employ personal assistants to meet their needs our Learning & Development worker Adele Donald can provide them with bespoke training on becoming a PA employer; understanding their duties and responsibilities and empowering them to make the most of the employer / employee relationship. They can support individuals to work through the Employers Self-Assessment checklist and identify opportunities to develop skills including access to a range of accredited training which meets their needs and lifestyle. Adele Donald For more information about Self-Directed Support contact us on or sds@dundeecarerscentre.org.uk Short Breaks Services Statement The Act also outlines that local authorities must publish and keep under review a Short Breaks Services Statement. This document will contain information to help carers know what support is available locally and nationally to help them have a break from their caring. We will be developing this over the summer. Hospital Discharge Hospital discharge is also covered by the Act. Health boards have a duty to inform the carer and to invite their views, which must be taken into account, before the person you are caring for is discharged from hospital. Carer Involvement The views of carers are also to be heard in planning and evaluating services that support carers, including local carer strategies, as there is a duty for local authorities and health boards to take such steps as they consider appropriate to involve carers and carer representatives. If you would like to become involved in the planning and development of services and support for carers please get in contact with our Involvement Worker Jenny Christie who can provide information on the range of involvement opportunities available at Dundee Carers Centre. You can find other sources of information and advice at: Dundee Carers Centre: Dundee Health & Social Care Partnership Carers Factsheets: publications/all Coalition of Carers Website:
