Res. 171 : ( Abstract) THE UL TRASTRUCTURE OF THE SPERMATOZOON OF THE TEL EOST, PS EUDOSCIA ENA CROCEA ( RICHARDSON) YOU Yong2Long L IN Dan2J un ( Bioengi neeri ng College, Fujian Normal U niversity, Fuz hou , Chi na) The spermatozoon of t he teleost, Pseudosciaena crocea ( Richardson) consist s of two parts : the head and the tail (flagellum). The structure of the head is quite special. A large

7 2 : 125 nucleus is located at the ventral part of the head. The dorsal part of the head is occupied by the centriolar complex. The posterior end of the head is the sleeve. The ventral surface of the nucleus is convex, whereas the dorsal surface of the nucleus is concave. Within the nu2 cleus t he chromatin condenses into wads, among which are loose chromatin fibers. The im2 plantation fossa is on t he dorsal surface of t he nucleus. It is groove2like running f rom t he an2 terior end to the posterior end of the nucleus. The centriolar complex is in the implantation fossa. The proximal cent riole is perpendicular to t he major axis of t he spermatozoon, where2 as the basal body is parallel to the major axis of the spermatozoon. The anterior end of the basal body is roll2like. It is electron2dense, with some microtubules in it. The posterior end of the basal body splits into 9 strips. The sleeve contains several mitochondria and vesicles. Within the cytoplasm of the sleeve, there is a membrane which is near and parallel to, as well as thinner than the inner membrane of the sleeve. The tail, which is thin and long, stretches out of the central space of the sleeve. It consists of a principal piece and an end piece. The cent ral st ruct ure of t he principal piece is axoneme. There is only a little cytoplasm outside the axoneme. The 9 doublets of the axoneme is connected to the 9 strips of the poste2 rior end of the basal body. The initial part of the axoneme is special in structure : there is no central pair of the single microtubule, the doublets of it are electron2dense, and there are no dynein arms on the doublets. At the end of the principal piece, the microtubules, which con2 stitute the axoneme, spiral to become a basket2like structure. Several microtubules extend into the end piece of the tail.
