3 Enjoy healthy meal and snacks every day! South West Healthy Kids Healthy snacks are important for healthy bodies. Both children and adults benefit from choosing nutritious foods from the five food groups every day. Eating regularly throughout the day is important; snacking can help keep you going until your next meal and is a great opportunity to include some extra fruit and vegetables into your diet. To satisfy your savoury craving, instead of reaching for a chip packet, some great snack ideas are to try wholegrain crackers with your favourite toppings like avocado or tomato, veggie sticks with hummus, or a small handful of nuts. For those with a sweet tooth, snacks like fruit salads, a small tub of yoghurt or a fruit smoothie are a great alternative to cake and biscuits. Whilst fuelling your body correctly with healthy meals and snacks, it is also very important to make sure you are drinking enough water! All family members should be encouraged to drink tap water with all meals and snacks, children should be taught to help themselves to water, and could be given a water bottle to encourage consumption. By carrying around a bottle of water with you, or keeping fresh water on display on the kitchen bench, you are more likely to choose water over other sugary drinks. For those trying to reduce their consumption of sugary drinks, try infusing water by adding your favourite fruit for a natural flavour hit! Come join our Strength Training Strength Training is held every Wednesday and Friday morning in the Day room at 10am, followed by a cuppa. Hand weights and ankle weights are used as well as towels for stretching. Cost is only $4.00. New faces are more than welcome!

4 During November we celebrate the importance of breathing and encourage everyone to stop and think about what they can do with just one breath. Lung foundation Australia aims to ensure lung health is a priority for all Australians and works to promote lung health among the wider community, patients and health care professionals. Lung disease does not discriminate - it affects the young, old, male, female, smokers and never smokers. At least one in ten Australians has some form of lung disease however Lung Foundation Australia estimates the number to be significantly higher. Recent research from the Lung Foundation Australia found more than 50% of all Australian adults rarely or never think about the health of their lungs. Indeed three out of five Australian adults studied reported symptoms or risk factors that put them at risk of possible lung disease. While we make a special effort to remind everyone about the importance of good health during this month, the message is one for all of us, every day of the year. There are many different types of lung disease affecting millions of Australians. In both men and women, lung cancer is the fourth most common cancer diagnosed and the most common cause of cancer related death, more than breast and ovarian and prostate cancers combined. The chronic lung disease COPD is more common that cancer, traffic accidents, heart disease or diabetes. Australia has one of the highest rates of death from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in the developed world. Lung Foundation Australia encourages everyone to take five minutes to do the lung health checklist. Go to lungfoundation.com.au for the test. and further information. Information from lungfoundation.com.au Lung Health Awareness Month
