On Friday 23 June we held the Official Opening of our latest group - Women s Shed on the Lake! The event was a great success with over 70 attending on the day. The morning included displays and a fantastic PowerPoint video presentation on the Shed and the activities we have done over the months. Thanks to all the ladies who were interviewed for this! We were also fortunate to have the Lake Macquarie Woman of the Year - Vivienne Bruce officially open the Women's Shed on the Lake for us which include cutting of the celebration cake and the unveiling of our new logo. We were also thrilled to have a surprise visit from the Mayor (Kay Fraser) who was generously spoke a few words as well. The guests were entertained by musician Sophie Berlyn whilst enjoying a delicious morning tea. 1

We appreciate everyone who attended including those who came and helped with set up, promotion and catering. Our Sensory Garden is coming to shape! Thanks to the work of people in our Garden Group and for donations of plants. The Garden Group is open for people who are interested to get involved with the maintenance of the vegetable and sensory garden at Boolaroo Public School. We encourage families in the school to join us as well. As spring is coming soon, it is a great time to join our Garden Group! It will be a busy time as well for the group preparing for the Opening of the Sensory Garden in October together with the celebration of Our Community Place s 30 th Anniversary. 3 Come and join our Garden Group! Open to anyone! - experienced and new gardeners as well as people who have a passion for the outdoors and meeting people! This is an exciting way to; meet new people with a similar interest provide great opportunities to share ideas & tips assist with maintaining our local Vegetable Garden (which provides produce for our Free Food Program & families of Boolaroo School) AND the NEW local Sensory Garden! socialise, have a cuppa together and learn together! The group meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month at am Our Community Place invites you to attend an Information Session & Afternoon Tea on the exciting concept of a voluntary exchange initiative called Timebanking! Timebanking is a community program that facilitates the voluntary exchange of services between members. Anyone can be a member of Timebanking as everyone has something to give. Tuesday mornings from 8.00am to 9.15am (school terms only) This year, Our Community Place is celebrating 30 years! What a great achievement! We are planning on marking the occasion as part of the Official Opening of the Sensory Garden in October. Stay tuned for more details in the upcoming months. 5 Why not join us as a member! 6 FoodREDi Program. Are you interested and keen to learn more about, making positive changes to your diet, physical activity and food budgeting? We have the opportunity to team up with Red Cross to offer the FREE Food REDi program to help you build skills, knowledge and confidence around making better choices for you and your family. Topics covered include food safety, nutrition, saving money, understanding labelling, cooking methods and healthy exercise habits. The program is usually offered over 6 sessions which run between two and a half to three hours. Includes; information sessions, cooking and then sharing the food cooked. It s a great program! Meets monthly. Meet new people with a similar interest. Share ideas, tips & a cuppa. Assist with maintaining our local Vegetable Garden (which provides produce for our Free Food Program & families of Boolaroo School) as well as the new local Sensory Garden! Youthgroup Youthgroup for teens aged yrs. Held at The Willows Uniting Church in Warners Bay. Fridays from 3.30pm during school terms Breakfast Club Held weekly at Boolaroo Public School for students attending there. A nutritious breakfast is served and activities are also provided for the children. Busy Brains Hub Held weekly at both Boolaroo Public and Speers Point Public Schools. For students attending these schools. Volunteers provide support to the children with homework and literacy & numeracy Tax Help Free help for tax returns for people on low incomes. Available from July to October. Office Facilities Use of our office facilities for a minimal cost - Photocopier, phone, computer & printer (with internet access), scanner, laminator. Support We provide information, referrals and advocacy. We can also help you with resume development and job searching. Volunteering Opportunities. 8 OzHarvest Delivers food weekly to our Free Food Program. Oz Harvest collects quality surplus food from all types of food outlets and delivers it directly and free of charge to charities and organisations providing assistance to disadvantaged men, women and children in Newcastle & Lake Macquarie Newcastle The Willows Uniting Church - Warners Bay Donate the use of their centre for a Youth group. Also provide volunteers and afternoon tea for the youth group Provides volunteers to assist in our Community Vegetable Garden as well as seedling donations Uniting Church Boolaroo Donates the use of their hall for the collection and distribution of food to people who come to the Free Food Program.
