2 EPOL LEADING THE FIELD through leading-edge feed and nutrition technology. Epol is scientifically formulated to give horses a perfectly balanced diet. Epol s in-house nutritionists ensure that customers benefit from the economical input costs while horses enjoy optimum output performance. Stringent quality controls using state-of-the-art near-infrared testing are maintained at Epol s on-site laboratories. While the advice of Epol advisors is always available to customers, bear in mind the following: KEY FEEDING TIPS Always provide ample clean, fresh water. Provide free access to high quality, palatable grass/legume hay. Avoid sudden changes of feed. Increase or decrease concentrate to hay ratio gradually over 10 to 14 days. Establish a regular feeding routine. Do not over-feed concentrates. Concentrate meal size not to exceed 2.5 kg. FEEDING TO WIN It is good to remember that a horse s dietary requirements differ from season to season. More feed is necessary in the winter to maintain body condition and for heat generation. Weeds growing in paddocks and pastures may bring about bigger problems as most of them cause colic. These weeds should be pulled out on an ongoing basis as they appear. Good quality hay is an essential part of a horse s diet. Clean fresh water should be available at all times. Free-choice salt is advisable as each horse s needs can differ. The feeding routine should be strictly adhered to, as horses are creatures of habit. The addition of extra minerals and vitamins should not be necessary when using Epol feeds, as a complete vitamin and mineral premix is an essential element of all our horse feeds. Sudden changes of feed should be avoided. Good management is directly related to success in your choice of horse related business.

3 RATIONS AVAILABLE IN CO-OPS RIDER Pellets/Meal: (12%) For horses and ponies at rest and up to medium work. This is a proven, well-formulated and widely used, all-rounder ration suitable for all horses and ponies in light/medium to moderate work, horses at box rest that need to gain/maintain body condition, as well as good doers in medium work and older horses with poor dentition. The energy level is sufficient to keep the animal in good condition. This feed is available in both pellets and meal and it is ideal for riding schools where the management of multiple horses needs to be simplified. 4 EPOL STUD RANGE = BALANCED GROWTH Small, frequent digestible meals are key to reducing excessive glycaemic response and avoiding starch overload. PREGNANCY MONTHS PREGNANCY MONTHS LACTATING MONTHS LACTATING MONTHS Slow foetal growth. Good nutrition essential for correct development. Rapid foetal growth. Mare s energy demands increased by 10-20%. Producing milk for newborn foal dramatically increases energy demands. As foal becomes less dependent on milk, quantity of concentrate ration can be reduced. Energy requirement may only be needed at normal maintenance levels. Minerals, high quality protein and vitamin E and selenium are particularly important; balanced all-round nutrition essential. STUD Pellets STUD Pellets STUD Pellets STUD Pellets STUD Pellets (14%) The ideal all-round stud ration KEY FEATURES: Fully balanced, supports growth and development AGE RANGE: Foals from 3-4 months onwards, brood mares, stallions KEY BENEFITS: Providing unique nutrition for the mare. Ensuring transfer of immunity to the foal. Promoting sound foetal bone development. Maintaining optimum digestive health. 5 ENDURANCE Pellets (11%) KEY BENEFITS: Medium starch and higher fat ration to meet the nutritional demands of your endurance horse. Suits medium to high energy requirements. This combined supply of energy sources is a winning combination for the demands of longdistance racing. Formulated to replenish the amino acids expended during long distance events for quicker recovery of your equine athlete. Feeding ENDURANCE horses Scientific research in endurance horse nutrition and metabolic processes has changed the practical feeding of endurance horses in the last few years. High fat and fibre and lower starch and protein diets are recommended to effectively supply readily available, slow-release energy for long-distance performance. Remember that horses still need a diet with starch present. The endurance horse will need the starch at the beginning of the ride and will then pull on the fat source of energy to sustain them during the ride. High fat diets reduce the volume of feed that horses have to consume to meet their energy needs for long-distance exercise, allowing more good quality hay to be consumed. Replacing some of the starch from cereals with fat and oil reduces the fluctuations in blood glucose and insulin levels and helps make excitable horses manageable, as well as reducing the risk of tying up. Fibre in roughage traps water in the hindgut, which acts as a reservoir during long-distance rides and helps to combat dehydration from heavy sweat loss. Horses sweating a lot have higher replacement needs for lost electrolytes, so a balanced electrolyte supplement should be added during and after strenuous exercise. Note that pre-race, it is best to add only coarse salt to the diet as hays are high in potassium and only sodium chloride needs should be addressed. Coarse salt at g should be added to the daily feed when in full training and good quality hay as well as clean water supplied ad lib. Lucerne hay can be fed, but not at more than 20% of total hay intake. Lucerne is a good source of calcium and magnesium to be fed at checkpoints to replace sweat losses naturally.
