Digitally signed by Maryanne Gaffney-Kraft DO 14 January :18 DIAGNOSES Gunshot wound of the right frontal scalp with injuries to the brain and skull Moderate to advanced decomposition Postmortem thermal injury with charring Postmortem partial dismemberment, bilateral legs IDENTIFICATION Body Identified By Dental Exam EXTERNAL DESCRIPTION Weight 62 pounds Body Condition Decomposed Rigor Absent Livor Not assessable Hair Blonde Eyes Decomposed Teeth Natural in good condition with restorations Received is a sealed black body bag which encloses a white body bag containing a body and seven brown paper bags. The body is covered by an off-white soiled sheet and is partially wrapped in a blue air mattress with a clear plastic liner. The sheet and air mattress are wet with brown/red fluid; a strong hydrocarbon odor is present. Dirt/mud, vegetation debris and postmortem insect activity consisting of maggots are present. The body is lying prone on the air mattress with the edges of one end wrapped posteriorly around the head, neck and the upper back enclosing them; the wrapping is secured in place by clear/opaque tape. 7 and partial lower extremities enclosing the anterior and lateral surfaces; scattered pieces of tape are present. The posterior surface of the majority of the torso and partial lower extremities is exposed and shows decomposition with skeletonization and charring; the bordering edges of the mattress also show charring. Lying on top of the air mattress, partially positioned over the decedent's right upper back/shoulder is a metal hatchet; charred debris is adhered to the handle of the hatchet. The body is that of an adult white female. The body is semi-clad in a brownish tee shirt which has a logo of "AMEDD OBLC Fort Sam Houston"; the tee shirt is positioned above the breasts. Accompanying the body adhered to the posterior torso is a charred metal ring and two charred metal buckles. The body shows dismemberment of the bilateral legs at the level of the mid femora; the cut/fractured surfaces show varying amounts of charring. Intact but decomposed skin showing extensive softening with epidermal slippage and red/green/black discoloration, is present on the head, neck, chest, upper abdomen and bilateral upper extremities except for the medial portion of the right wrist and hand which shows skin loss with exposure of the underlying soft tissues and bone, and the left hand which shows skin-degloving. The lower abdomen, pelvis and upper back show decomposition with skin maceration and loss with varying degrees of soft tissue and bone exposure; the upper back is soot covered. The remaining back, buttocks and partial lower extremities show charring with exposure of the underlying soft tissues and bones. There are no readily identifiable marks or scars. There is no evidence of medical therapy. The seven paper bags are sealed with clear tape and labeled: large bone fragments (4), large bone pieces (1), bone fragments (1) and hand (1). The bags contain charred bone fragments of the distal femora, bilateral tibia and fibula, and bilateral feet. Additional lower extremity charred bone fragments are recovered from debris within the air mattress. INJURIES GUNSHOT WOUND: On the right mid frontal scalp, 2" below the top of the head and centered 1" right of the anterior midline is an entrance gunshot wound consisting of a 2 3/4" x 3/8" to 1" stellate perforation. Black particulate consistent with soot is present on the skin, underlying soft tissues and underlying bone of the entrance wound. The wound track subsequently perforates the skin and musculature of the right mid frontal scalp, the frontal bone with inward beveling along its inferior edge and outward beveling along its superior edge, the brain, the right parietal bone with outward beveling and exits the skin and musculature of the right parietal scalp, 2" below the top of the head and 2 1/2" right of the posterior midline through a 3/4" x 1/4" irregular perforation. Recovered within the liquified decomposed brain is a small fragment of lead projectile. Associated injuries consist of radiating fractures to the frontal, right sphenoid, right temporal, right parietal and occipital bones ranging in length from 2" to 8". In the anatomical position, the wound track travels from the decedent's front to back, and left to right. DISPOSITION OF CLOTHING AND PERSONAL EFFECTS The following items are released with the body None. The following items are preserved as evidence Projectile fragment from head and left hand skin-glove; evidence is turned over to the Fayetteville Police Dept. on Outer body bag, inner body bag, debris, air mattress with tape and plastic lining, sheet, hatchet, tee shirt, metal buckles x 2 and metal ring x 1, pulled head hair, cut portions/edges of the right and left femora, and DNA sample - tooth #20; evidence is turned over to the Fayetteville Police Dept. on PROCEDURES Radiographs Full body x-rays with projectile fragment in the head, body bag debris x-rays and dental x-rays for identification. Identification Received from the US Army Dentac, Fort Bragg, NC are antemortem dental records and a Panorex radiograph (dated 10/25/07) for Holley James Wimunc. Comparison of the antemortem and postmortem dental record/examination and radiographs, specifically the absence of teeth # 1, 16, 17 and 32, and the presence and unique shapes of restorations on Page 2 of 6 F January :18

8 teeth # 2, 3, 14, 15, 18, 19, 30 and 31, positively identifies the decedent as Holly Wimunc. Dr Allen D. Samuelson DDS from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry is consulted for identification confirmation. INTERNAL EXAMINATION Body Cavities The internal organs are in an advanced state of decomposition. Collections of oily fluid are present within the bilateral pleural cavities. Intravascular blood is not present. Cardiovascular System Heart Weight 100 grams The pericardial sac is free of significant fluid and adhesions. The coronary arteries arise normally and follow the usual distribution; no significant atherosclerosis is present. The myocardium is without focal lesions. The aorta and its major branches are intact without significant atherosclerosis. Respiratory System Right Lung Weight 110 grams Left Lung Weight 70 grams The upper and lower airways are free of debris and foreign material. The parenchyma of both lungs is without obvious focal lesions. Gastrointestinal System The proximal portion of the small bowel is present and without focal lesions; the mid and distal portions of the small bowel and the large bowel are not present. The stomach is empty and without focal lesions. Liver Liver Weight 630 grams The capsule is intact and the parenchyma is without focal lesions. The gallbladder is present. Spleen Spleen Weight 30 grams The spleen is without focal lesions. Pancreas Not identified. Urinary Right Kidney Weight 60 grams The right kidney is without focal lesions. The left kidney is not identified. The bladder is not identified. Reproductive The reproductive organs are not identified. Endocrine The thyroid is without focal lesions. The adrenal glands are not identified. Neurologic Brain Weight 540 grams The brain shows advanced decomposition and is in a liquified state. Other than the previously noted gunshot wound, the dura is unremarkable. Musculoskeletal System Examination of the soft tissues of the neck reveals no focal lesions. The hyoid bone and laryngeal cartilages are intact. The larynx is clear. The lingual mucosa is intact; the underlying musculature is devoid of hemorrhage. 9 Sections of the heart, lungs, liver and right kidney show autolysis. SUMMARY AND INTERPRETATION The decedent is a 24-year-old white female who was found partially burned in a shallow grave. The significant finding at autopsy is a gunshot wound of the right frontal scalp with injuries to the brain and skull. Moderate to advanced decomposition, postmortem thermal injury with charring, and postmortem partial dismemberment of the bilateral legs are present. Given the investigative and autopsy findings, it is my opinion the cause of death in this case is a gunshot wound of the head. DIAGRAMS 1. Adult (front/back) 2.
