6 I need Inspiration

7 How do you apply this inspiration and Cone of learning reality? 1. Initial training is vital to a strong foundation as an inspector; this industry needs inspectors not equipment operators a. Level I is a trainee / operator (45 years of observation) 2. Training not validated by performance capability is worth very little a. USAF DOE, POD, Performance Demonstration Studies (BP PAUT example PCN and ASNT (certificates of certifications do not = capability) 3. Training never stops, refreshers / audits validate real-time capability a. Online refresher courses / New technology comprehension / annual workshops / spot audits 4. Level IIIs must validate the complete certification process, starting with training a. No program can be successful without a foundation of excellence and continuous verification

8 More applications / suggestions 5. We need to change the minimum requirement culture by raising the bar on expectations of performance / we test to 70/80 % but expect 100% flaw detection. a. Culture changes with time by consistent leadership and vision b. How did we get where we are in 2018? 6. NDT Training is a business, not in competition with ASNT or ISO; Inhouse training or outsourced training are business decisions a. Hellier is a 30+ year business example, based on a great foundation of ethics, quality and consistently striving for excellence b. Business in Asia, Canada, Europe and throughout the US. c. Business with Aerospace, Space, Oil and Gas, Petrol Chemical, Power, Pipeline, Nuclear, Composite Manufacturing, Structural Building, DOD and DOT...all these training requirement are driven by codes specific to industries and applications but all require quality inspections for safe operations and equipment life cycle management.

9 More thoughts / suggestions 7. These point are in harmony with what ASNT in the US wants for any one holding an ASNT Certificate of Certification a. Certification harmony is part of the new NDT training and certification culture b. I expect more "shall" type requirements in documents driving training and certification c. I expect higher exam and performance requirements not minimum 70% scores d. The challenge, is the business case for more and continuous training and higher performance scores when catastrophic failures are not driving the NDT business. We must sell prevention as the smarter business culture, BECAUSE WE KNOW NDT.

10 WE cannot teach experience Equipment Operation You can teach this UT formula for near field for example or Snell's law. Experience is personal and must be lived one day at a time. Use of technology takes accepting the personal responsibility to do NDT not just learn about NDT. Inspection Application How to inspect a complex part with CR / DR is not like conventual RT. A 20 year RT tech is not qualified to do CR/DR after a 24 hour class on the software. Experience needs to be gained hour by hours, application after application.

11 My suggestions in Conclusion / Use every tool We all like Instant replay Tell / show / slow motion / show again (repetition creates learning) Just in time learning (Youth soccer or the NFL are great examples) NDT APS / YouTube / Videos on the phone
