2 Danish course title: Kursus i patofysiologi English course title: Course in Pathophysiology Semester: 1st semester Imparted in: Danish/English Objective: By the end of the course, students shall be able to account for the occurrence, aetiology, pathogenesis, symptoms, complications, diagnostics, prevention and treatment of significant diseases, and to use the medical terminology related to physiology and pathophysiology. Furthermore, students should be able to account for the human organism's physiology and pathophysiology and have a fundamental understanding of commonly occurring diseases. 3 Danish course title: Kursus i videregående bevægeapparatets biomekanik English course title: Course in Advanced Biomechanics of the Locomotor System Imparted in: Danish/English Objective: The objective of the course is to introduce students to original scientific articles in the fields of gait analysis (pathological/normal), sports biomechanics, ergonomics/work environment, muscle and tendon mechanics, tissue biomechanics, motor control and simulation. Students will also perform a practical assignment addressing a specific and classical problem associated with the biomechanics of the locomotor system. Through reading of articles, student presentations and discussions, students shall achieve a critical understanding of problems of basic and applied research concerning the biomechanics of the locomotor system. Furthermore, the objective is that students acquire a thorough overview of existing knowledge and methods of modern biomechanical research so that they may themselves initiate independent scientific projects at master thesis level. Danish course title: Kursus i videregående fysiologisk modellering English course title: Course in Advanced Physiological Modelling Imparted in: Danish/English Objective: The objective is that students acquire a thorough overview of the existing knowledge and methods of modern medical research so that they may themselves initiate independent scientific projects at Master's Thesis level. The course consists of introductory presentations to biomedical scientific method including the composition of the scientific article and complex networks and advanced physiological modelling. Additionally, researchers will lecture on medico-technically relevant biological projects, and students will present and analyse current scientific articles which will be discussed in plenum. Subjects vary from one year to the next, but will typically include electrocardiographic time-series and vascular models. To achieve the maximum grade of 12, the student shall be able to: possess an advanced understanding of the character and dynamics of physiological models construct a physiological model on the basis of given information and perform a simple analysis of data with a view to procuring new, previously unknown, knowledge about a physiological system use Matlab programming related to advanced analysis of a dynamic problem describe physiological time-series and study their dynamics analyse a scientific article from the field of physiological modelling and/or time-series analysis and critically assess the used method and the results published convey a physiological dynamic problem in a report and a PowerPoint presentation Exam form: Oral exam including a presentation of a project assignment and written critique of a project assignment prepared by others Grade scale: 7-step grade scale External or internal assessment: Internal assessment Exam aids allowed: None

5 Danish course title: Kursus i Radioaktive isotoper og ioniserende stråling English course title: Course in Radioactive Isotopes and Ionizing Radiation Imparted in: Danish/English Objective: The course comprises the use of radio isotopes in biomedicine. This theoretical and practical course is fundamental to laboratory work with radioactive isotopes. Students whose course participation is approved and who pass the exam will achieve the Danish National Board of Health's license to work with open radioactive sources. Course admission requirements: None Training and work forms: Lectures, laboratory exercises and discussion sessions Mandatory elements: Participation in laboratory exercises and subsequent preparation of exercise reports. Objectives: To achieve course attestation, the student shall be able to: Procure, assess and account for physical data on radionuclides, including type of decay, radiation type and energy, and their occurrence or method of production. Select detector types and use standard laboratory equipment for qualitative and quantitative detection of ionising radiation, both for analytical purposes and with a view to monitoring radiation and contamination levels account for the sources of error associated with each type of detection and measurement system, including measurement statistics, and planning and executing accurate and reproducible activity determinations in biologically relevant sample material Assess methods and results regarding the use of radioactive tracers in biological and medical methodology, and plan and execute tracer testing Assess the radiation hygiene/health-related consequences of laboratory procedures comprising radionuclides or ionising radiation Instruct workers at isotope laboratories in the use of correct radiation hygiene work procedures in connection with the handling of sources of ionising radiation and monitor that the work is performed safely with regard to radiation hygiene Demonstrate an understanding of the practical aspects of work with open radioactive sources in the laboratory, including the necessary measures with regard to radiation protection Account for the primary natural/artificial sources of ionising radiation seen in relation to their contribution to the total radiation dose received by individual citizens and employees Account for ionising radiation's interaction with and absorption in matter, including the mechanisms involved in energy deposition in biological tissue Account for stochastic and deterministic radiation damage, particularly with a view to dose dependence Account for fundamental concepts and units of dosimetry and for the principles of dose limitation and monitoring in accordance with the ICRP's guidelines and national legislation (ICRP = International Commission on Radiological Protection) Perform simple dose calculations in relation to external and internal radiation in the context of specific procedures/work situations involving radioactive matter. Account for the primary processes at cell or tissue level causing biological radiation damage

7 Exam form: 3-hour written exam Grade scale: Passed/failed External or internal assessment: External Exam aids allowed: All, except for external communication devices Danish course title: Kursus i medicinsk anvendelse af ioniserende stråling English course title: Course in Medical use of Radiation Semester: 3rd semester Imparted in: Danish/English Objective: To prepare students for industry or hospital-based research in diagnostic radiology, clinical physiology & nuclear medicine and radio therapy so that students - after having concluded their training - may account for the main characteristics of physics, rays' interaction with matter, radiation biology in relation to diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy. Course admission requirements: Achieved course attestation and passed exam in Radioactive Isotopes and Ionizing Radiation. Training and work forms: Lectures, class-based training and calculation exercises. Mandatory elements: All exercises and reports. Requirements for approval of course participation: Approved participation in the training activities, including handing-in and approval of reports 3 weeks after the course concludes. Danish exam title: Eksamen i medicinsk anvendelse af ioniserende stråling. English exam title: Exam in Medical use of Radiation. ECTS: 10 Semester: 3rd semester Exam language: Danish/English Exam registration requirements: Achieved course attestation in the course Medical use of Ionizing Radiation. To pass the student shall be able to: Account for rays' interaction with matter in regard to photons Account for rays' interaction with matter in regard to particles Account for the radio-biological conditions of rays' interaction with matter at the DNA/RNA level, the cellular level and at organ and whole-body levels. Account for radiation hygiene conditions associated with radiology, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy. calculate internal dosimetry using the MIRD model calculate internal dosimetry using the Monte Carlo simulation describe the principle of medical cyclotrons and their use describe X-rays in diagnostic radiology, conventional projection radiography, analogous and digital detector systems, CT scanning describe SPECT and PET scanning, biokinetic models, the whole body counter describe radiotherapy using conventional dose planning and IMRT dose planning.

Exam form: 9 written reports based on exercise Grade scale: Passed/failed External or internal assessment: Internal assessment Exam aids allowed: Written aids are allowed 3 weeks after the course concludes Danish course title: Kandidatspeciale English course title: Master s thesis Course admission requirements: The Master's Thesis may not be initiated until the student has completed courses equivalent to 55 ECTS points of the Master's Programme. It is recommended that any general competence courses and technical specialisation courses be concluded before initiating this course. Semester: 3rd and/or 4th semester Language: Danish/English Training and work forms: The Master's Thesis is the work of a single student. However, two students may present and hand in a project on a shared subject and in this context share any general descriptive sections, e.g. the introduction. The Master's Thesis subject shall normally fall within the field of subjects covered by the Study Programme. The Master's Thesis subject is agreed on by the student and a supervisor. The delimitation and approval of the thesis is made following further discussion between the student and the main supervisor. The agreed subject shall be approved by the Head of Studies. Several supervisors may be attached to a Master's Thesis project. The main supervisor shall be affiliated to the Study Programme. Furthermore, the main supervisor acts as examiner and is responsible for the project's academic quality. Secondary supervisors may be affiliated with other study programmes at the University of Copenhagen, Technical University of Denmark, other tertiary educational institutions, clinical practices or companies related to the field. Training consists of supervision. Objective: The Master's Thesis is the final assignment of the Master's Study Programme. The objective is to give the student an opportunity to use the acquired knowledge independently in a major assignment. Objectives: The supervision process includes communication of the learning goals of the Master's Thesis. The Master's Thesis and its oral defence shall document that the student satisfies Programme objectives with regard to the use, elaboration and dissemination of specialised knowledge. A student who has fully achieved the Programme's goals will be able to: use professional terminology relevant to the field in the discussion and analysis including correct use of practices with regard to quotation and statement of references. employ theories and interpretations relevant to the field. perform literature searches in accordance with generally accepted and frequently used methods in the field, e.g. databases, books and scientific journals. delimit one or more problem fields in a manner relevant to research and current professional discussions in the field.

9 treat the problem fields comprehensively within the context provided by a Master's Thesis and using the skills achieved during the studies, including new international research literature. document and argue the assertions, theses and conclusions presented, e.g. by referring to generally accepted sources or through clear arguments and theoretical deliberations. convey the subject in a well-structured, clear and pedagogical manner. present the topic in a conceptually and linguistically precise and cohesive manner so that the presented theses, arguments and conclusions appear coherent internally and in relation to the field's fundamental assumptions. demonstrate self-dependence, e.g. by contributing to conceptual innovation, conceptual clarification, clarification of a problem field, presentation of new arguments or criticism of known arguments and points of view. sum up the contents and results of the Master's Thesis in an adequate and precise abstract. Mandatory elements: None Requirements for approval of course participation: None None Danish exam title: Eksamen i kandidatspeciale English exam title: Exam in Master s Thesis Exam registration requirements: As course admission requirements ECTS: 30 or 35 Semester: 3rd or 4th semester Exam form: Oral 60-minute exam consisting of 30 minutes of oral presentation of the Master's Thesis using AV equipment followed by 30 minutes of scientific discussion focussing on the problems presented in the thesis. If two students have prepared theses on a shared subject, they attend the oral exam individually. The oral defence of projects which were prepared in a company may be presented non-publically if so agreed with the supervisor. Exam aids allowed: All aids are allowed External or internal assessment: External assessment Grade scale: 7-step grade scale To achieve the maximum grade of 12, the student shall be able to: process a well-delimited and clear problem within the field of Biomedical Engineering plan, perform and document a structured and focused literature search and retrieve relevant literature select, explain and discuss relevant theory select, explain and use a scientific method relevant to the problem at hand plan and perform an independent analysis based on the problem at hand and critically assess own results. if existing empirical material is comprised: critically assess the design, methods used, quality and any research ethical considerations related to such material. if the student's own empirical material is used: state motivation for design, methods used, discuss the collected material's quality, including research ethical considerations related to such material. conclude, critically discuss and put into perspective the knowledge produced in the Master's Thesis in relation to use, topicality and theory or method development. present a logically cohesive and well-founded argumentation covering the statement of the problem at hand, analysis and conclusion

10 document an ability to produce an academic presentation in writing as well as orally. At the assessment of a Master's Thesis, the academic contents shall carry the greatest weight. The student's ability to express her or himself is also assessed, but weighs less, while correct spelling is only of limited importance. The report and oral exam are assessed together as one unit.
