1 Elective course Statistical method analyzing the effects of interventions Statistik til analyse af effekten af interventioner et metode kursus Master of Science in Physiotherapy, University of Southern Denmark Version: October 5 th, Semester Autumn 2017 (Studieguiden er med forbehold for ændringer) [1]
2 Aims of the course The aim of this course is to make the students able to evaluate the effects of interventions using appropriate statistical methods, and evaluate and discuss the appropriateness of the statistical methods used. Learning outcomes After completing the course the student is expected to have Basic knowledge and understanding of: the prerequisite for choosing different statistical tests evaluating differences between two or more groups. different types of statistical methods for evaluating differences between two or more groups including multiple linear and multiple logistic regressions analysis and mixed effects models. Skills to: choose the most appropriate statistical method for a given analysis. perform statistical analyses using STATA. understand and perform adjusted data analysis in STATA. evaluate the appropriateness of using different statistical methods in analyzing data. Interpret results of performed statistical analyses present results of basic data-analysis in graphic in figures and tables. Generel competence to: perform statistical analysis and argue for the appropriate statistical methods. write the statistical analysis section in a protocol / article in interventions studies. Language The course will be in Danish. However, if one or more participants/s do not speak or understand Danish sufficiently the teaching language will be English. Teaching methods Lectures followed by individual and group exercises. All students are expected to participate actively in the exercises either individually or in groups [2]
3 Course workload 5 ECTS Prerequisite Basic knowledge of statistics equivalent to BASTA (basic statistics) in module 1, first study year on the Master of Science in Physiotherapy or completed equivalent courses. Guiding distribution of the workload Course 5 ECTS. (5 ECTS x 27.5 hours = hours). Activity Work load hours Lectures. 7 days, 2 hours each day Individual and group exercises (supervised). 7 days 2 hours each day Preparation for lectures and assignment 85,5 Written assignment 24,0 Course workload 137,5 Evaluation form The module in Statistical method analyzing effects of interventions is evaluated by an internal evaluation based on a written assignment. The assignment must be written in Danish or English. The assignment will be evaluated with the 7-step scale. Deadline for handing in assignment: November 10 th, no later than noon. The assignment consist of two parts Part A: based on a case and given dataset the student should write a statistical analysis plan Part B: based on cases and given datasets the student should perform a statistical analysis and argue for the methodological choices. [3]
4 Reexamination If judged not passed (meaning 00 or -03 on the12-scale) a re-examination takes place within the same semester as the regular exam or in immediate continuation. The re-examination will be held on the same conditions as the ordinary exam, using the same evaluation forms and guidelines. Registration for re-examination must be done by the student via self-service. Deadline for handing in the re-examination assignment: December 20 th, not later than noon. Criteria for exhaustive fulfillment of the learning outcome The candidate should show knowledge of the prerequisite for choosing statistical test analyzing differences between two or more groups. The candidate should be able to formulate a statistical method section choose the most appropriate statistical method for a given analysis performing the statistical analysis using STATA understand and perform adjusted data analysis in STATA. evaluate the appropriateness of using different statistical methods in analyzing data. present results of basic data-analysis in graphic in figures and tables.
