Today s Session What, Why and more than behaiours! Discuss one specific model used to facilitate and deelop the coach-athlete relationship Discuss ways in which these areas can be deeloped Oerall Aim: Enhance Communication
Thanks to Toni Minichiello for proiding this image 5-10 mins Group Discussion
The Relationship The ultimate goal of a coach-athlete relationship is to produce a combined outcome of improed performance....it goes beyond the coach-athlete relationship. He s a friend of the family and another sort of father-figure. Stee Cram...coaching is simply not just something you do! John Wooden
The Research Preious (early) models focussed on leadership and how coaches should coach their athletes. Howeer the problem with these is that they are simply behaioural in nature...do this, do that etc. Howeer, as we hae already discussed, the relationship between you and your athlete is just as important as what you do with them! We know that the athletes behaiours, thoughts and emotions are all dependant of each other, so how do we cater for all of these needs? Thus enhancing COMMUNICATION...

Building Closeness Two questions to answer as a group. (5-10 minutes) Using the preious model, what hae you done to build closeness with your athletes? How important is building closeness early on in your coaching career with athletes? T = I X C (perceied)
Co-Orientation (Cognition) Shown through communication and sharing ideas Co-Orientation Lack of Coorientation Shared Knowledge Shared Understanding Disconnected Contention Jowett, S. (2003) When the Honeymoon is oer: A case study of a coach-athlete dyad in crisis. The Sport Psychologist, 17,

Building Co-Orientation Step 1: Between the 2 of you decide what you think are the most important attributes that are inoled in becoming elite in your discipline Step 2: Separately, score (out of 10) where you think you/they are. Remember 10/10 is usually world class / Olympic Medallist Step 3: Come back together and discuss any discrepancies Step 4: Set some goals! Excel Doc.
Complementarity (Behaiours) The behaioural interaction between you and your athlete Complementary Behaiours Non- Complementary Behaiours Reciprocal Behaiour Helping Transactions Opposed Behaiours Ineffectual Support Jowett, S. 14 Key Reflections Coach-Athlete relationships are best described as relationships where emotions, cognitions and behaiours are inter-related. Building relationships are done through deeloping Closeness, Co- Orientation and Complementarity. Ultimately, remaining on the same page is the most important consideration Which of the three areas do you think, as a coach, you will need to build with your athletes?
