1 9 th Grade 2004 National Physical Education Standards to MN Benchmarks STANDARD BENCHMARK ACTIVITY/EXAMPLE 9.1 Demonstrates competency in motor skills & movement patterns needed to perform a variety of (Physical Skills) Students will demonstrate competence (basic skills, strategies, & rules) in an increasing number of more complex versions of at least three of the following different types of movement forms: aquatics, team sports, individual & dual sports, outdoor pursuits, self-defense, dance, gymnastics Students will document their competence in two or more types of movement forms, such as playing a team sport using all the skills & strategies, demonstrating proficiency in a variety of swimming strokes or creating & demonstrating a gymnastics routine. Uses correct forehand & backhand body mechanics in racquet sports. Performs forearm pass, set pass & serve using correct form in volleyball. Demonstrates proper etiquette & safety while playing golf. Moves to position quickly & prepare to receive a pass in basketball. Demonstrates proficiency by hitting shots to open places on court, anticipates opponent s shots, & communicates with partner in badminton. Demonstrates a variety of swimming strokes. Use a quantitative analytic rating scale to assess skills & strategies in 2 types of movement forms.
2 9.2 Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies & tactics as they apply to the learning performance of (Knowledge) Students will assess the movement skills of self & others Students will analyze basic offensive & defensive strategies in games & sports Students will identify the characteristics of highly skilled performance in a few movement forms Students will identify & apply critical elements to enable the development of movement competence/proficiency. Correctly assess his or her personal strengths & weaknesses in an activity. Watch an organized sporting event & analyze how the basic offensive & defensive strategies contributed to the outcome of the event. Use movement principles & concepts to improve the movement performance of self & others. Explain the impact of participation in selected sports/activities on? Analyze how on-the-ball skills & off-the-ball movements contribute to performance. Observe an elite athlete & analyze his/her movement form against a provided rubric. Use movement principles & concepts to improve the movement performance of self & others. In cooperative groups, students select a activity, analyze it for its component skills, & create a drill of modified game designed to improve that skill.
3 9.3 Participates regularly in activity. (Physical Activity) 9.4 Achieves & maintains a healthenhancing level of fitness Students will participate regularly in health enhancing & personally rewarding activity in multiple settings Students will seek & select activities from a variety of movement forms based on personal interest, meaning & fulfillment Students will develop & conduct a personal activity program meeting their needs Students will participate in a variety of health-enhancing Students will use principles of training for the purpose of modifying levels of fitness Students will assess personal health-related fitness program based on an accurately assessed fitness profile. Participates in activity outside the classroom & identify personal feelings about that activity. Choose 3 types of activities to participate in to improve fitness in & out of the classroom. Attempt to meet appropriate levels of cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength & endurance, flexibility, & body composition necessary for a health & productive life based on results of health-related fitness assessment.
4 9.5 Exhibits responsible personal & social behavior in activity settings. (Behavioral Skills) Students will meet or show progress towards healthrelated fitness standards such as Fitnessgram or another standardized healthrelated assessment Students will apply safe practices, rules, procedures, & etiquette in all activity settings Students will act independently of peer pressure Students will resolve conflicts in appropriate ways Students will keep the importance of winning & losing in perspective. Demonstrate programplanning skills by setting goals, devising strategies, & making time lines for a personal activity plan. Use scientific principles & concepts (e.g., methods of stretching, types of muscular contractions) as strategies for improvement of personal fitness goals. Use a variety of resources, including available technology, to assess, design, & evaluate a personal fitness plan. Exhibits respect for the unique characteristics & abilities of peers. Acts responsibly to avoid conflict. Works cooperatively with students of all levels. Focuses on teamwork rather than winning. Shows leadership by diffusing conflict during competition. Slides into base in a manner that avoids injury to a defensive player.
5 9.6 Values activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, selfexpression, & social interaction (Intrinsic Value) Students will enjoy participation in a variety of activities in competitive & recreational settings Students will pursue new activities both alone & with others Students will enjoy working with others in a sport activity to achieve a common goal Students will recognize that activity can provide a positive personal social environment for activities with others. Create a pamphlet on the benefits of activity. Reflect on reasons for choosing to participate in selected Identify reasons to participate in activities (e.g., health, enjoyment, challenge, selfexpression, & social interaction). Participate in a group activity where you work together to accomplish a group goal.
