5 EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: FACTOR 4 MANAGING EMOTIONS: Managing & Regulating Emotions in Yourself and Others to Promote Emotional and Intellectual Growth - Leading from within - Leading others Managing Emotions: Self & Other Regulation Emotional Regulation: All the conscious and non-conscious strategies we use to increase, maintain, or decrease one or more components of an emotional response High Emotional Regulation Abilities: - Aware of emotions, but not controlled by them Low Emotional Regulation Abilities: - Overly rational or overly emotional - Ignoring or avoiding emotional data Emotional Intelligence & Leadership Leadership, which embraces the emotional side of directing organizations, pumps life and meaning into management structures, bringing them to full life. (Barach & Eckhardt, 1996, p.4) Leading Others: The Importance of Symbolism Effective leadership directly involves the use of emotion, often through symbolic management. In symbolic management, the leader uses symbols stories, rituals, myths, fables to rouse and motivate staff to guide them toward achievement of a shared vision. (Caruso, Mayer, & Salovey, 2001) Using Your Emotional Intelligence: A Summary
6 EI SKILL Identifying Emotions WHAT TO DO Pay attention, listen, observe, ask questions, ensure understanding of your own and others emotions. Using Emotions to Facilitate Thought Determine how these feelings influence thinking. Change your mood, or that of the other person or group if needed. Understanding Emotions Consider reasons for the feelings, and how they will likely change depending on what happens next. Managing Emotions Don t minimize the feelings and don t blow the feelings out of proportion. Include emotional information along with rational information for best decision-making and actions.
