2 Who are we? Elementary and High School Art Educators in Fairfax County Public Schools/DC-Metro area of Virginia Our teaching philosophy and Program of Studies consists of the use of Big Ideas /Human Issues We began to fantasize about building-up a storage bank of categorized Big Idea Exemplars for lesson planning (during our spare time)!

3 Who are you? Who teaches ES? MS? HS? Higher Level Education? Museum Educators? Who is already using Big Ideas /Human Issues for Lesson Planning? Who is already using online media to exchange ArtEd ideas? (ListServ, Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.) Who is already using Pinterest?

4 What is a Big Idea or Human Issue? Big Ideas express things we all experience as part of the human condition (Identity, Transformation, Conflict, Cycles, Celebration, Unity, Spirituality, Loss, A Sense of Place, etc.) Big Ideas allow the artist to express something about themselves, or about something that is of meaning to them Big Ideas allow for an open-ended, individualized response from students Big Ideas create a deeper meaning in artwork (for both the artist and viewer)

8 Why Pinterest? Pinterest is a FREE electronic community for collecting and organizing ideas, images, and resources based on MANY subjects It s a timely medium for collaborating with colleagues, and educators and artists from around the world about teaching resources! It s a great tool for sharing images and exemplars with students! Friends and colleagues from other electronic media will love the targeted capability of Pinterest!

10 ELEMENTARY LESSON Using Pinterest Exemplars Sixth grade cut paper collage lesson County s Elementary Art Program of Studies Big Idea for 6 th grade is IDENTITY. Breaking down the Big Idea into smaller extensions for meaningful art challenges throughout the year. Extensions of IDENTITY are MEMORIES Students are introduced to the term Evocative and then shown exemplars of other artworks that explore this idea. Students then plan and reflect upon their memory both visually and in writing.

16 HIGH SCHOOL LESSON Using Pinterest Exemplars Photo 1 students create indoor pinhole and outdoor solargraph pinhole photos using self-constructed cameras The overarching Big Idea for FCPS Photo 1 students is A SENSE OF PLACE. Students view A SENSE OF PLACE images on Pinterest, along with Justin Quinnell s videos demonstrating production of cameras and exemplars of pinhole and solargraph photos. In collaboration with FCPS photo teacher Susan Silva, students view prototypes of extended exposures her students created and pinned in Pinterest. Students build box and can cameras, load, and shoot indoor photos and outdoor extended 1-6 month exposures. (My students are still completing the outdoor exposures.) Print and mount, self-evaluate using a rubric, class critique
