2 What is a paragraph? Let's Brainstorm... 2

3 In your notes: A paragraph is a group of sentences that are placed together and relate to the same topic or idea. 3

4 In your notes: A paragraph has 3 main parts... 1) Topic Sentence expresses the essential or main idea of the paragraph. (It doesn't need to be the very first sentence, but must be in the beginning of the paragraph.) 2) The Body (includes 3 5 detail sentences) supports the statement made in the topic sentence. 3) Closing Sentence this is similar to the topic sentence and "ties" or "wraps up" what was discussed. 4

5 Why write a paragraph? Paragraphs help us to organize our ideas. Paragraphs help us to express our ideas more clearly. When we write using paragraphs, we are better communicators. 5

6 Sample Autobiography Paragraph Doing volunteer work in high school is what helped me make my decision to becom a Registered Nurse. I have always been the type of person who is willing to lend a helping hand when needed. I have volunteered for many events, such as going on mission trips to Mexico, to help build homes for people who have nothing but a shack to live in. I have also helped out with Special Olympics for many years. Volunteering to help out with Special Olympics is how I made my decision to become a Registered Nurse. My experience with helping kids with mental problems has changed my life. I look at life in a whole new way, because of how those kids have touched my life personally. I learned to not take things for granted, and live each day to its fullest extent. I love the fact that someday I will be able to help someone in times of need, or trouble. I also want to become a nurse because I like helping others, and I am a people person. Having the ability and skills to help a person in serious hardship, is amazing to me. I want to make a difference in the way people look at life. If I can put a smile on someone s face everyday, it will make all my studying and hard work worthwhile. Find the topic sentence, supporting detail sentences, and concluding sentence. 6

7 Did you notice where the main idea was in the example? sentence. The main idea is usually in the first sentence, which is called the topic Notice the topic sentence below in red. Mushrooms can be dangerous. People often get poisened when they pick and eat mushrooms. They think these mushrooms are harmless. The "death cap" mushroom is one of the deadliest. It is found in the woods in the U.S. People should be careful when they pick mushrooms. 7

8 Think of it like this... A paragraph is like a sandwich... The top and bottom slice of bread hold all the stuff together. The stuff in the middle is the supporting details or the body of the paragraph. Those sentences should relate to the main idea. 8

9 Sample EXPLORE Test Question [1] When the floor is buffed to a shine, I can get up enough speed to hang ten the entire length of the kitchen. [2] In my family we re a little wild and crazy that is, we kids are wild and our mom is crazy. [3] But she s crazy in a good way. [4] For instance, while other moms might plead threaten, or yell to get chores done, our mom turns everything into a game. [5] She organizes wall washing competitions, followed by floor mopping contests, followed by towel surfing, which happens to be my specialty. For the sake of unity and coherence, Sentence 1 should be placed after Sentence: F. 2. G. 3. H. 4. J. 5. This paragraph doesn't seem to have a concluding sentence. Write a sentence that would tie the ideas together. 9

10 Now, take your journal and choose one entry to focus on. (Pick a paragraph that you think needs work.) With a partner: 1) Read the paragraph and decide on the main idea of the paragraph. If there isn't one because there are too many ideas, then decide what the main idea should be. Write the main idea in the margin. 2) Underline the topic sentence. 3) Are there 3 5 supporting detail sentences that all relate to the main idea? If not, then (in the margin) write some ideas for more information. 4) Is there a closing sentence that is similar to the topic sentence? Either circle it or write one. 5) Find another partner and complete the process with another journal entry. 10
