2 2 General Competitive Grants/Fellowships 2002, Summer Stipend from Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, Germany, for 2 months summer research 1998/2000 Grant from National Science Foundation for Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement at UNF (in collaboration with Dr. Eisler at Psychology, Iversen as principal investigator) 1998 One-year research fellowship from German Research Council for research at the Institute of Medical Psychology, University of Tuebingen, Germany (while on research leave from UNF) Best Paper award from Japanese Psychological Association for a publication in Japanese Psychological Research (in English) 1997, Summer Fellowship from Kyoto University, Japan, for summer research at Primate Research Institute, Kyoto, Japan 1996, Summer Fellowship from Kyoto University, Japan, for summer research at Primate Research Institute, Kyoto, Japan 1994, Summer Fellowship from Kyoto University, Japan, for summer research at Primate Research Institute, Kyoto, Japan 1992/93 Japanese Ministry of Education Fellowship for research at Primate Research Institute, Kyoto University (while on sabbatical leave from UNF, one year) Primary Teaching at UNF I have taught a variety of classes for undergraduate students at UNF: Introduction to Psychology, Research Methods, Learning Theory, Learning Theory for Teachers, Behavior Modification, Experimental analysis of Behavior (with laboratory), Senior Seminars, and special topic Seminars in behavior analysis. In addition to teaching, I have directed numerous students in their Independent Directed Studies. My main teaching emphasis has been on Research Methods, Experimental Analysis of Behavior, and Behavior Modification. Teaching in these classes centers around methods of research, data analysis, and basic principles of learning. In Experimental Analysis of Behavior, students conduct experiments on basic learning principles with live animals (rats). In Behavior Modification, students learn about application of basic learning principles to human therapy and they conduct a study of some aspect of their own behavior. In Research Methods students learn about basic methods of research, data analysis, and writing of research reports. In sum, to emphasize that psychology is a discipline within the general sciences, my classes have a strong emphasis on methods of scientific analysis of behavior. Recently, I have been teaching a seminar for the graduate students in the General Masters program. Primary Current Research Interests At UNF s animal learning laboratory, I use rats to study a) circadian rhythms of learned behavior, b) how chains of behavior are formed and broken down, c) how learned behavior is maintained over long periods of time, and d) how significant environmental events come to

3 3 determine when specific behaviors will occur. The past 7 years a good part of my research has been done during the summers at Primate Research Institute, Kyoto University, Japan, where I have established automated methods to train chimpanzees to perform complex human-like behaviors such as drawing the letters of the alphabet. Last year I started collaborate with researchers at the new Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, Germany, also on the research topic of complex primate behavior. With researchers at University of Tuebingen, Germany, I have participated in the development of an automated communication tool for totally paralyzed human patients that teaches them to use brainwaves to control a cursor on a computer monitor to select letters for communication. In sum, I study basic principles of learning from rats through chimpanzees to the ultimate application of the principles in the human domain to help improve the life conditions of disadvantaged human patients.
