THE TRAGICALLY HIP
Coaches DON T Talk About WORK
PASSION a strong inclination toward an activity that people like, they find important and in which they invest time and energy Vallerand, et al., 2003
Dual Model of Passion Harmonious Balance Well Being Motivation Obsessive Imbalance Negative Rigid Vallerand, et al., 2003
OP OR HP WHERE ARE YOU AT?
DUAL MODEL OF PASSION EXAMPLES Romantic relationships (Séguin-Levesque, Laliberté, Pelletier, Blanchard, & Vallerand, 2003) Dancers (Rip, Fortin, & Vallerand, 2006) Musicians (Bonneville- Roussy, Lavigne, & Vallerand, 2010)
Work Forest, Mageau, Sarrazin, & Morin, 2010; Thorgren, Wincent, & Sirén, 2013; Trépanier, Fernet, Austin, Forest, & Vallerand, 2014
Sport Lafrienière, Jowett, Vallerand, Donahue, & Lormier, 2008; Vallerand et al., 2008
I think passion is something you go all in on and you can lose track of other things around you in your pursuit of it. Partner 2
It is pretty much an all consuming desire to achieve something or do something, it s a state of being, I think.... It s a total commitment to that person, or chain, or activity. Partner 10
I think passion means first of all loving what you do. I think when you are all in, willing to invest everything it takes to make that work Coach 2
For me, passion is just something that you have an inner desire to work towards. I absolutely have a passion for sport. It s something that gives me excitement. It also gives you the greatest joys, but also the greatest down and lows and sad moments because you put so much into it. Sport is easy to be passionate about. I think because it is all encompassing. Coach 5
SO WHAT
Coach Performance Shelf Life Coaches Athletes
Given that most coaches are likely obsessively passionate, and that obsessive passion has been shown to be detrimental to job performance and health, do we need to think about the way we manage coaches to better support coach performance and health? What does mean for you in your role? Does something need to change? What is the first step if change is required? What are the barriers or challenges to making this happen? If this info has no impact and means nothing, why is that?
Summary of Generational Considerations (Duxbury, 2005) Generation Veterans Baby Boom Baby Bust (Generation X) Echo Boomers (Nexus, Generation Y) Birth Years Just before or during WW II Current Age Range Core Values Cautious Self sacrifice and deferral of rewards Religiosity Black and white world view Traditional Nostalgic Deferent to authority Team work Work Values Loyalty Dependability Hard working Persistent Wisdom and experience over technical knowledge Authoritarian Optimism Entitlement Self-fulfillment Non-conformist Experimental Objective sense of right and wrong Workaholic Acceptance of stress Team-oriented Importance of title/status symbols Demanding of respect and sacrifice from subordinates Comfort with technology Adaptiveness to change Pragmatism Non-traditionalism Acceptance of diversity Confidence and self reliance Immediate gratification Working within the system Sacrifice personal life for advancement Dependent on close supervision Dedicated to goal achievement Desire for job security Insecure Desire to be recognized Comfort with technology Adaptiveness to change street smart Subjective view of reality Optimism Diversity Globally connected networking Independence and autonomy Challenge seeking Variety seeking Entrepreneurial Distrust of hierarchy and authority Continuous development of skills Lack of loyalty/unwillingness to commit Work-life balance Fun and communal workplace
Given the quotes in the handout, the brief overview of the interplay of passion, family and generational differences, do we need to accept that there is only one way to be a successful expert coach OR do we need to create a model and sport culture that accounts for passion, generational elements and supports different models for coach performance? If so, what might that model look like or include? If not, how do we account for obvious challenges while still working to ensure retention and maximize effectiveness of coaches?
