2 ACEs: contributions from Positive Psychology principles & research Asset based or positive approach to theory and practice The term positive used to denote an appreciative- vs. a deficit-centred model of psychological and organisational query Commitment to identifying and promoting the conditions and processes that contribute to flourishing and optimal functioning of people, communities and institutions (Gable & Haidt, 2005). Applications of Positive Psychology e.g., children s development: greater use of intrinsic motivation, positive affect, creativity, personal strengths & resilience in schools. children s counselling: emphasize hope, meaning, and self-healing. job satisfaction: optimised work environment, optimised performance including - authentic rewards at work (flow; impact; wellbeing) improvement of organizations: empowering, trust, belonging, shared goals & inclusive social ethics 2

7 The impact of asking why or how questions findings Solution-focused (SF) is more optimal than Problem-focused (PF) More Positive Affect & Greater understanding of goal/needs Positive Affect has big impact on mood and on action planning Combined effects of PA+SF are best conditions for: self-efficacy goal progression action planning feeling good is beneficial feeling good + clear goals = most optimal (Grant, 2006) 7 Dr Aneta D. 8 Positive emotions a domino effect Positive : Negative Ratio > 2.9 : 1 Positive emotions signal health and well-being. Positive emotions: generate well-being, sustain health, and promote psychological conditions for success.

9 Appreciative Enquiry Approach: asking different questions It is a joy to be hidden, but a disaster not to be found (Winnicott, 1958) Strengths questions What is the best thing about you? When are you at your best? What brings out your best? What is your most significant achievement? World Economic Forum 9

10 Appreciative Enquiry Approach: asking different questions The Reflective self Ability to think about ourselves: who we are, choices we make, what we want to become Process for self enhancement including ethical accountability Maintaining a positive attitude towards the self is fundamental for wellbeing and self care 10
