Imel s NTI Packet This packet is to be completed on the days we are not in school due to inclement weather.

NTI Day 1 Try and design an experiment from the following hypotheses. 1. The more time people spend using social media, the less able they are to express themselves in conversation. Experiment: 1. Drinking energy drinks makes people more aggressive. Experiment: 2. Taking a nap in the afternoon makes people more relaxed and less irritable for the rest of the day. Experiment: 3. Spending time with a cat or dog decreases the amount of stress someone is feeling and allows them to perform better on tests. Experiment: 4. Eating breakfast in the morning increases the ability to learn in school. Experiment:

NTI Day 2 Data Analysis Worksheet Background: One of the most important steps that a scientist completes during an experiment is data processing and presentation. Data can be analyzed by the presentation of the data in table format (data table), or the processing of that data through graphical manipulation to visually discern the differences in the variables tested. The purpose of this worksheet is to give you an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of these scientific skills. Reading a data table: Examine the date found in Table 1 and answer questions #1-4. Table 1: Growth of eight plants in a three week period Amount of Light per day Amount of Water per day Height Week 1 in cm Height Week 2 in cm Height Week 3 in cm Plant 1 0 hours ¼ cup 0 cm 0 cm 0 cm Plant 2 0 hours 1 cup 0 cm 0 cm 0 cm Plant 3 4 hours ¼ cup 1 cm 3 cm 6 cm Plant 4 4 hours 1 cup 0.5 cm 1 cm 1.5 cm Plant 5 8 hours ¼ cup 1.5 cm 4 cm 8 cm Plant 6 8 hours 1 cup 1 cm 3 cm 6 cm Plant 7 16 hours ¼ cup 1 cm 2 cm 3 cm Plant 8 16 hours 1 cup 1.5 cm 5 cm 10 cm Data Analysis: 1. In this experiment, what were the two independent variables tested? 2. In this experiment, what is the dependent variable? How do you know? 3. What conclusions can you draw in regards to the amount of light a plant was exposed to and how tall the plant grew? 4. What conclusions can you draw in regards to the amount of water given to a plant and how tall the plant grew? 5. Describe which plant or plants did he best and develop a hypothesis on plant growth based on the date you examined. Use the following format to create your hypothesis: If (IV), then (DV)

NTI Day 3 The Language of Science The main reason students find it difficult to understand science is because of all the hard to write, spell and read words. Actually, scientific vocabulary is a hodgepodge of little words that are linked together to have different meanings. If you learn the meanings of the little words, you'll find scientific vocabulary much easier to understand. Use this list to guess the meaning of each of the terms. Word Meaning Word Meaning a or an not or non hemo blood meso middle hyper above endo inner, inside hypo below aero needing oxygen or air intra within, inside anti against itis disease, inflammation amphi both, doubly lateral side aqua water logy study of arthro joint lys break down auto self meter measurement bi two, twice, double mono one, single bio life, living morph form carne flesh micro small cephal head macro large chloro green multi many chromo color pod foot cide killer, kill, killing phage to eat cyto cell phobia dislike, fear derm skin philia like di two, double plasm form ecto (exo) outer, external proto first endo internal photo light epi above poly many gastro stomach synthesis to make genesis origin, beginning sub lesser, below

NTI Day 4

NTI Day 5 Independent and Dependent Variables: Practice worksheet Please identify the independent and dependent variables in the following descriptions of experiments: 1) Students watched a cartoon either alone or with others and then rated how funny they found the cartoon to be. 2) A comprehension test was given to students after they had studied textbook material either in silence or with the television turned on. 3) Some elementary school teachers were told that a child s parents were college graduates, and other teachers were told that the child s parents had not finished high school; they then rated the child s academic potential. 4) Workers at a company were assigned to one of two conditions: One group completed a stress management training program; another group of workers did not participate in the training. The number of sick days taken by these workers was examined for the two subsequent months. 5) Students at a University were split into two groups and each received a different text for a philosophy course. Once group received a traditional text book, while the other received an interactive textbook on a tablet computer. After the course, the final exam marks between the two groups of students was compared.

NTI Day 6

NTI Day 7 Experimental Design Worksheet Practice: Write a hypothesis for each of the statements and identify the variables, control group, and experimental group. 1. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of lung cancer. Hypothesis: If, then Control Group: Experimental Group: 2. Eating breakfast increases performance in school. Hypothesis: If, then Control Group: Experimental Group: Read the following situation and answer the following questions. 3. Suzie Q wants to know the effect of different colors of light on the growth of plants. She believes that plants can survive best in white light. She buys 5 ferns of the same species, which are all approximately the same age and height. She places one in white light, one in blue light, one in green light, one in red light and one in the closet. All of the ferns are planted in Miracle-Grow and given 20 ml of water once a day for 2 weeks. After the two weeks, Suzie observes the plants and makes measurements. Hypothesis: If, then Control Group: Experimental Group: Constants: What types of measurements can Suzie make on the plants to determine how they did in different types of light?

NTI Day 8 Identifying Independent and Dependent Variables, and Study Designs Instructions: For each research description below, identify the independent variable and dependent variables. 1. A researcher hypothesizes that blondes really do have more fun. To test this hypothesis, she interviews a natural brunette who has recently become a blonde to determine if there is any change in the amount of fun she has. Independent variable: Dependent variable: 2. A developmental psychologist is testing the hypothesis that children in first grade know more words in the English language than children in Kindergarten. To test this, she sits in on two classes (one first grade, the other Kindergarten) and counts the average number of words children in each class speak. She then compares the counts. Independent variable: Dependent variable: 3. A clinical psychologist hypothesizes that people who have been diagnosed as having major depression will be more likely to also be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder than will people who have not been diagnosed with major depression. To test this, he gives a survey to 100 people being treated for depression and 100 people with no known mental disorder. The survey asks them to report whether or not they have been diagnosed as having an anxiety disorder. Independent variable: Dependent variable: 4. A pharmacologist is testing whether a new anti-anxiety medication, Moodcor, will cause people to gain weight. To test this, she gives 100 people Moodcor for one month and 100 people a placebo drug. At the end of the month, she monitors any weight gain. Independent variable: Dependent variable: 5. A developmental psychologist believes that if children successfully lie to their friends, they will be more likely to try lying to their parents. To test this hypothesis, he asks 50 children to report how many times in the last month they have lied to their friends, and whether they were successful. He then asks them how many times they have lied to their parents. Independent variable: Dependent variable:
