2 Inspiring Innovation & Creativity 6th ANNUAL THINK TANK Thursday, October 11, 2018 Sutton Place Hotel, Edmonton Welcome from Valerie Paice, President, CLPNA Council The CLPNA Council is pleased to host our sixth annual Think Tank, and I am happy to welcome you to this event. Council sponsors this Think Tank for two reasons. First we want to hear about leading edge health delivery practices in Alberta and around the world and we want our profession to be prepared to embrace and champion changes and transformation for an improved healthcare system. Second, as a partner and collaborator in the healthcare system, we want to share this learning opportunity with policy makers, educators and other health professions. We believe in collaborative care and hope that the inspiration collectively gained from these sessions will contribute to the continued evolution of a quality healthcare system for Albertans. This year, the theme of the Think Tank is Inspiring Innovation and Creativity. The world around us is changing rapidly. The numbers of seniors requiring services is growing rapidly, technology is changing the way we produce goods and deliver services and science is breaking new ground in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. It is important that we collectively learn about these changes, face them with enthusiasm and creativity and plan and implement innovations in healthcare to take advantage of the monumental change before us. In the Think Tank today, you will hear about the future plan of Alberta Health in their efforts to address technology change and sustaintability. You will hear how genetic research, regenerative medicine, artificial intelligence and drug innovation will change the future of medicine. You will also hear about the impact of aging and dementia on the health system and the global response to address this mounting challenge. In addition, we will discuss ethical issues that must be addressed by individuals, professions and society while responding to the growing potential for innovative change. I expect this Think Tank will inform and excite us as we continue providing leadership for positive changes in the Alberta healthcare system. Our commitment is to quality care for Albertans. The CLPNA looks forward to working with you to meet this challenge in the future.

FACILITATOR Gary Goldsand Gary Goldsand is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, and the Director of the John Dossetor

He brings a background in religious and cultural studies to his instruction, and aims to encourage thoughtful selfreflection and compassion among learners.

5 FACILITATOR Gary Goldsand Gary Goldsand is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, and the Director of the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre. He provides education in ethics, communications, and professionalism to undergraduates, clinical trainees, and practitioners of all types. He brings a background in religious and cultural studies to his instruction, and aims to encourage thoughtful selfreflection and compassion among learners. After spending five years at the Joint Centre for Bioethics at the University of Toronto, Gary Goldsand served as the first full-time clinical ethicist practicing in Alberta, based at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. While there, he spent 15 years exploring how this new clinical profession might support patients and clinicians, and how clinical teams can work together to optimize patient outcomes, and enable rewarding careers for professionals. SPEAKERS Dr. Lawrence Brody Lawrence Brody is the Director of the Division of Genomics and Society at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) at the National Institute of Health, in the USA. He is also a Senior Investigator in the Social and Behavioral Research Branch and the Head of the Genetics and Environment Interaction Section at the NHGRI. Dr. Brody studies the inherited components of human disease. He is interested in studying genetic mutations that lead to perturbations in normal metabolic pathways and cause disorders such as cancer and birth defects including neural tube defects. Dr. Brody is also interested in the application of genetic information to public health and disease prevention. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Brody received his B.Sc. degree in Biology from the Pennsylvania State University in 1982, and his Ph.D. degree in human genetics from John Hopkins University in He completed his postdoctoral fellowships at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Michigan Medical Center. He joined NHGRI in 1993 as an investigator. From 2010 to 2014, he served as the Chief of NHGRI s Genome Technology Branch.

SPEAKERS Dr. Christopher J. Centeno Christopher J. Centeno, M.D., is a specialist in regenerative medicine and has helped found the emerging specialty of Interventional Orthopedics at the Centeno-Schultz Clinic in Colorado.

6 SPEAKERS Dr. Christopher J. Centeno Christopher J. Centeno, M.D., is a specialist in regenerative medicine and has helped found the emerging specialty of Interventional Orthopedics at the Centeno-Schultz Clinic in Colorado. He is one of the few physicians in the world with extensive experience in the culture expansion of and clinical use of adult stem cells to treat orthopedic injuries. He has had many world-wide and U.S. procedural firsts in orthobiologics and is CMO of Regenexx and a founding member of the Interventional Orthopedics Foundation (IOF). His clinic incorporates a variety of precise imageguided orthobiologic injections to help patients from all over the world avoid more invasive orthopedic surgery. Dr. Centeno has chaired multiple international research-based conferences. Dr. Centeno has also served as editor-in-chief of a medical research journal dedicated to traumatic injury and serves as a peer reviewer for multiple research publications. Dr. Centeno trained at the Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Medical Center and the Institute for Rehabilitation Research. He hails from both Florida and New York and currently resides in Boulder, Colorado with his wife and three children. Dr. Kentaro Horibe Dr. Kentaro Horibe is a neurologist at the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology, Japan. He is currently the Head of Cooperation Systems at the Center for Comprehensive Care and Research on Memory Disorders. From 2010 to 2012, Dr. Horibe served as a Senior Specialist for Dementia in the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and he was involved in formulating the five-year plan for promotion of measures against dementia (Orange Plan). Dr. Horibe was an initial staff of the Agency for Medical Research and Development which was modelled after the U.S. National Institute of Health in 2015, and contributed to the launch of the ORANGE registry, the first nationwide dementia registry in Japan.

7 SPEAKERS Reg Joseph Reg Joseph was appointed as the CEO of Health City, Edmonton, in February He has 20 years experience spanning the biotechnology, high technology and investment sectors. Reg has served in a wide variety of roles including: the CEO of a local University of Alberta start-up company, an equity research analyst with Boston-based Leerink Swann & Co. and a U.S.-based Invitrogen Corporation (now Thermo Fisher). Most recently, he served as the Vice President of the Health portfolio at Alberta Innovates. In this role, he led the provincial strategy for health innovation and drove industry and nonprofit collaborations with the province. Reg currently serves as Chair of the Board of BioTalent Canada, sits on BioAlberta s policy committee and serves as President of the Board for the Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton (SAGE). He has a B.Sc. in Physiology and an MBA in Finance. Dr. John R. Mackey John Mackey is a medical oncologist and Director of the Clinical Trials Unit at the Cross Cancer Institute and Professor of Oncology at the University of Alberta. He has been a translational research and cancer clinical trialist for 24 years, and Executive Director of TRIO ( an Edmonton-based academic trial group that has 350 cancer centres in 42 countries conducting 30 cancer trials, three of which triggered FDA and Health Canada drug approval. Dr. Mackey has more than 300 cancer-related publications, multiple patents, and has founded or co-founded three biotech / med-tech companies. In order to facilitate the evaluation and commercialization of new cancer therapies, he launched the Alberta Cancer Pre-Phase 1 Program (

8 SPEAKERS Corinne Schalm Corinne Schalm is the Executive Director of Continuing Care with Alberta Health. In her position she leads policy development for the province s expansive continuing care system. She has a Master of Science degree in Gerontology, a Masters Degree in Public Administration and is a Fellow of the Canadian College of Health Leaders. Corinne is passionate about improving the quality of life for seniors. She has over twenty-five years experience working in senior leadership roles in the field of gerontology in Alberta, working at the provincial policy level and with seniors service provider organizations. With a keen interest in developing organizational capacity in the application of evidence to improve practice and policy, she is a decisionmaker regularly sought out as a partner in research initiatives. She has served on 15 research teams over the past decade, authored/co-authored 13 peer reviewed publications in academic journals and has over 100 presentations at conferences/ workshops/ invited groups. Milton Sussman Milton Sussman was appointed Deputy Minister of Alberta Health on October 23, Alberta Health is responsible for setting policy, legislation and standards for the health system in Alberta. Before taking the position at Health, Mr. Sussman served multiple governments in a variety of roles at the highest levels in Winnipeg. He was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority from October 2015 to June 2017; Chief Operating Officer and Vice President, Community Health Services, between 2005 and 2010; and Vice President, Long Term Care, Services to Seniors and Chief Allied Health Officer between 1999 and Deputy Minister Sussman has also had a distinguished career with the Manitoba Public Service, serving in roles as the Clerk of Executive Council and Cabinet Secretary, and in a variety of Deputy Minister positions including Health ( ); Family Services and Housing ( ); and Healthy Living ( ).

SPEAKERS Dr. Richard Sutton Richard S. Sutton is a distinguished research scientist at DeepMind and a professor and icore chair in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta.

9 SPEAKERS Dr. Richard Sutton Richard S. Sutton is a distinguished research scientist at DeepMind and a professor and icore chair in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta. Before joining the U of A in 2003, he worked in industry at AT&T and GTE Labs, and in academia at the University of Massachusetts. Rich received a PhD in computer science from the University of Massachusetts in 1984 and a BA in psychology from Stanford University in He is co-author of the textbook Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction from MIT Press. He is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. Rich directs the Reinforcement Learning and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and is a principal investigator of the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute. His research interests centre on the learning problems facing a decisionmaker interacting with its environment, which he sees as central to artificial intelligence. He is also interested in animal learning psychology, in connectionist networks, and generally in systems that continually improve their representations and models of the world.
