10 Narrative report I am an ophthalmologist at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear (MEE). I completed my residency in Ophthalmology at MEE and a fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. I joined the faculty at MEE in I practice general Ophthalmology with a special interest in cataract, corneal and external diseases. I maintain a busy clinical and surgical practice, managing routine and complex cataract and other anterior segment conditions, at MEE s Longwood Medical Area office as well as the main MEE campus. I strive to provide quality patient care in an ethical and evidence-based manner using state of the art technology. I also serve as the Coordinator of the Ophthalmology Consult Service at the Brigham and Women s Hospital Emergency Department and inpatient wards. In that role, I oversee the smooth function of the service, ensure that appropriate and timely patient care is provided, and facilitate communication between BWH and MEE providers. In addition to my clinical responsibilities, I am heavily involved with the MEE Ophthalmology residents and HMS students education in several capacities. I serve as the Comprehensive Ophthalmology Service (COS) curriculum advisor for the residency program. In that role, I review and revise the Goals and Objectives for the COS rotation and the Cataract Morbidity and Mortality conference. I coordinate the COS lectures for the resident lecture series. I am a preceptor for a second year residency rotation, introducing the residents to cataract surgery in a stepwise fashion. I am also one of the core Wet Lab preceptors for MEE. Throughout the year, I am routinely assigned a medical student who spends a 4-week elective rotation at MEE (approximately 9 students a year). I enjoy my role as an educator and derive special satisfaction from it. In 2014, I was awarded the Surgical Teacher of the Year award by our residents. I have been a faculty member of the HMS Cataract Surgery Course for 2 nd Year Residents since In 2016, I was appointed as one of the Co-directors. This course is an intensive, 2-day surgical training course providing lectures and wet lab sessions, designed to teach the essentials of cataract surgery to ophthalmology residents from across the country. It has been running for 14 years, and it attracts over 40 faculty and 120 residents per year. In addition to my clinical and teaching responsibilities, I have also been involved in the coordination of the MEE cataract surgery database, facilitating communication between the data entry staff and the COS surgeons, revising the data collection process and reviewing the data analysis and result publication for COS. This database serves as a source for various quality and outcomes projects and publications. In addition, I also serve as a member of MEE s Human Studies Committee and Utilization Review Committee. I served as President of the Eye Medical Staff from 1/2016 to 12/2016 and as President of the Medical Staff from 1/201 to 12/2018 for MEE. In 2018, I was appointed to the MEE Board of Surgeons. On a daily basis, I find my clinical practice extremely rewarding and enjoy the core of my specialty: examining the eye, diagnosing and treating eye disease. At the same time, having the opportunity to introduce medical students to our field, and to teach a group of extremely talented and hard-working residents is a privilege and a responsibility that I take very seriously. 10
