7 Preface The fourth edition to this book has been a long time coming. With the huge volume of new research in gastrointestinal diseases of all types, it became increasingly clear that a group of only a few individuals could not possibly keep pace and author an entire comprehensive gastrointestinal pathology textbook. As a result, this text has now become an edited volume, with contributions from a greater number of authors, all of whom are experts in gastrointestinal disorders. The overall format of the book has not been altered from the previous edition, but the content has been extensively revised and updated. As before, the chapters for nonneoplastic disorders for each gastrointestinal site are arranged to begin with a discussion of normal anatomy, physiology, and histology. These sections are then followed by sections covering congenital disorders, acquired structural alterations, infectious diseases, drug-related injury, diseases related to altered blood flow, and other entities. Separate chapters exist for in-depth discussion of motility disorders and inflammatory bowel disease. The nonneoplastic disease chapters for each gastrointestinal site are followed by a chapter dedicated to the neoplastic disorders affecting that site. Separate chapters discuss hereditary polyposis and cancer syndromes, as well as neuroendocrine, hematopoietic, and mesenchymal neoplasms. As in previous editions, this book is intended to be a comprehensive resource for the pathologist evaluating biopsies, cytologic, or resection specimens from all gastrointestinal sites. It contains not only information about both benign and malignant gastrointestinal diseases that are not included in most other texts but also in-depth discussion of pathophysiologic processes and molecular mechanisms where possible. Many new photomicrographs have been added to supplement the text. In addition to the changes in content of the fourth edition of this book, it has been renamed Fenoglio-Preiser s Gastrointestinal Pathology in honor of Dr. Cecilia Fenoglio- Preiser who has been the driving force behind this text since its inception. This textbook would not exist without her lifelong collection of educational materials, her enthusiasm for teaching, and her boundless energy. I consider myself extremely lucky to have had Dr. Fenoglio-Preiser as a mentor and as a friend.
