Read a paper entitled The Pattern of Neurological Diseases as seen at the Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya. 4. July 1989 Attended one week s course on clinical Epidemiology by the Nairobi Clinical Epidemiology Unit. 5. Nov Attended the Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the American Neurological Society at the University of Washington, Seattle, U. S. A. 6. July 1990 Attended the Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Association of Physician of East and Central Africa at Silver Springs Hotel, Nairobi. Read a paper entitled, Physiological Mechanisms of Photosensitive Seizures. 7. Jan Nov facilitated a total of 10 seminars on epilepsy in Nairobi, Mombasa, all the provincial Headquarters and Armed Forces Headquarters in Nairobi. All these seminars educated General Medical Practitioners and other health workers on epilepsy. These seminars were co-sponsored by the Ministry of Health, The Kenya Medical Association and Ciba-Geigy (a pharmaceutical firm). 8. April 1991 Attended the Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Kenya Medical Association at White Sands Hotel, Mombasa, read a paper entitled The Epidemiology of Epilepsy 9. Feb conducted a three weeks tour of lecturers in 22 secondary schools, Teachers training Colleges and Homa-bay Medical Training College. During these lecturers, I together with 15 students gave talks and public demonstrations on various aspects of epilepsy aimed at public education on the disease. I also used this time to conduct research in to knowledge attitudes and practices of the people of South Nyanza concerning epilepsy. 10. April 1992 Attended the Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Kenya Medical Association at the Imperial Hotel, Kisumu. I read a

4 paper entitled The Knowledge, Attitudes and practices of people in South Nyanza District of Kenya on epilepsy. 11. Feb attended the 14 th Annual Scientific Conference of Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and Kenya Tripanosomiasis Research Institute, at KEMRI headquarters Nairobi. Read two papers entitled: - a. Clinical presentation of Epilepsy at K. N. H. and b. Attitudes and Practices on Epilepsy in Kenya. 12. March 1993 Attended the first Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA) International Neuroscience Conference at KEMRI Headquarters, Nairobi. 13. Jan-Oct 1994 conducted a series of lectures and demonstrations to non-specialist doctors in Nairobi, Mombasa and all the other provincial towns on headaches and migraine. 14. Lectures in Neurology and Internal Medicine and Therapeutics to undergraduate and graduate Medical, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy and Intensive Care Students.

5 2. Twice weekly clinical teaching ward rounds in ward 7B of KNH. 3. Bedside clinical teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate medical students in Internal Medicine and Neurology. 4. Once weekly general medical out-patient clinic where I review patients and also conduct clinical teaching to undergraduate and postgraduates. 5. Once weekly specialist Neurology outpatient clinic. 6. I am also consulting Neurologist to all the major private hospitals in Nairobi, in my spare time. In these and also at KNH, the majority of my patients (up to 60%),have the various complications of HIV/AIDS. 7. Research at department of Medicine. Current on-going research projects include: - a. Study of handedness in a group of University students in Kenya. b. Pilot study of an instrument to identify and study dementia in Kenya. c. Study to characterize the clinical and bacteriological features of decubitus ulcers at KNH. d. A study to establish the hematological para-meters in epileptics in long-term use of anti-epileptic medication. e. A review of the Kenya Cancer Registry to characterize brain tumors in Kenya. f. The epidemiology of Migraine and other headaches in Kenya. g. Epidemiology of sleep disorders in Kenya. h. The genetic markers in patients showing hypersensitivity to anticonvulsants. i. The E.E.G. pattern in sickle cell anaemia in patients at KNH. j. The prevalence of back injuries among health care workers at the KNH. k. The Epidemiology of Epilepsy in Kenya. l. Bone metabolism in pre-menopausal women on long term anti epileptics. m. The practicality of home-based care in HIV/AIDS patients in a rural community in Kenya. n.
