EVERYDAY EXERCISES FOR OLDER ADULTS MOVEMENT FOR MAINTAINING INDEPENDENCE POSTER

FUNDING The Physical Culture Association of Alberta received funding from the ACICR through their Community Injury Control Fund. This funding supports research, design and the development of a poster that is specifically targeted for seniors across the province.

POSTER DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT The Physical Culture Association of Alberta has developed a resource in poster format to address the gap in exercise resources available for well seniors. The project has been conducted in two phases. Phase I primary focus was on the research and development of the poster. Phase II primary focus is printing the posters and conducting two pilot sessions with well seniors being supported through all of the exercises on the poster.

FOCUS GROUP A focus group was developed consisting of a number of professionals in the field of fall prevention and older adult physical activity leadership/training. The group collaborated through the design and development stages and provided continual feedback through to the final stages.

TARGET: Target Group: Well seniors residing in Alberta seniors facilities and in their own homes. We estimate approximately 8000 seniors to benefit from this project.

WELL SENIORS DEFINED: The Physical Culture Association of Alberta has defined Well Seniors in categories based on the World Health Organization (WHO) Health Fitness Gradient and the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association (AFLCA):

WELL SENIORS DEFINED: The Physical Culture Association of Alberta has defined Well Seniors in categories based on the World Health Organization (WHO) Health Fitness Gradient and the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association (AFLCA): WHO Group III: Physically Fit/Healthy: These individuals regularly engage in physical activity, are described as physically fit and healthy and have few limits in performing activities of daily living. Seniors in this group can participate in all physical activity programs on their own and alongside individuals many years their junior.note* Within the WHO scheme, the physical activity needs of older persons differ substantially depending on their position along the Health-Fitness Gradient. Group III is considered the healthiest, independent seniors along the gradient. ACE/AFLCA Physically Fit and Independent: The physically fit senior exercises at least twice per week for their health, enjoyment and well-being, or works regularly at a physically demanding job or hobby. Their heath and fitness reserves put them at low risk for falling into the physically frail category. Seniors in this group require exercise programming that maintains their level of fitness, which in turn allows them to live an active independent lifestyle and/or participate in a wide range of recreational activities.

PROJECT PILOTS The Pilots have now been completed! They were conducted at Touchmark at Wedgewood and Waterford of Summerlea seniors facilities in Edmonton, AB. The older adults had the opportunity to provide feedback through face to face surveys.

Feedback from face to face surveys Love the size 11X17 Love the color some would like to see the poster in a couple of color options, as well as black and white Font size is good Easy to follow directions Like the pictures for sure Can t wait to share them with friends! Putting it on my fridge

DISTRIBUTION The Association will begin distributing the posters throughout the Province in May, The poster will be disseminated throughout the province of Alberta via workshops with practitioners and their older adults as well as direct delivery to older adults. We have had several requests for bulk orders, as well as individual orders so we will accommodate all that we can.

PROJECT COMPLETION: Face to face surveys and a questionnaire will be conducted upon completion of each workshop. The project completion date is September, 2012.
