Different professionals are called upon to insure that the total pain of an individual and their family is managed so that they can experience a high quality of living. Many TR professionals believe that their role does not allow for them to contribute to the palliative care experience of patients and families, however, the TR specialist plays an integral part in augmenting the quality of life of the people they support in a palliative context. This session will address what palliative care is, what it is not, and how therapeutic recreation intersects with the tenets of palliative care in supporting individuals and families with life limiting or terminal illness. 1B - Minds in Motion Kathy Diehl Cyr The Minds in Motion program combines physical activity, socialization and mental stimulation for people living with early to mid-stage Alzheimer s disease, or other dementias. Attendees will learn about the program s success and have a taste of the program activities. 1C - Sensory Stimulation for People with Dementia Jennifer Klos & Jennifer Licardo Touch quilts and comfort mitts are sensory items that are being utilized in long term care and hospitals. Geriatric patients/ residents with dementia or delirium can find interest in the different textures and items. These items are an age appropriate intervention that is purposeful, provides comfort and enjoyment, improved worth and increased social interaction. Learn more about how to incorporate sensory stimulation items in your workplace.
5 Workshop Descriptions 2A - Active Aging in Manitoba: Encouraging Community Connections Jim Evanchuck Active Aging in Manitoba Catch the wave of Active Aging in Manitoba (AAIM) that is focused on opportunities for all older Manitobans to enhance their health, mobility and continuing participation in their community. Learn how AAIM is striving for ageless engagement of older Manitobans in healthy choices and behaviours that contribute to physical, social and mental wellness, independence and quality of life through staying socially connected and physically active and reducing risk for falls. 2B - Falls Prevention: How to adapt your program to meet the new standards Stephanie Jeffrey Manitoba Fitness Council As recreation leaders, we spend time with individuals that are at risk of falling. Let s talk about the small changes we can make to existing programs, and maybe even existing exercises, for falls prevention. This practical session will get you looking at the exercises you teach differently. 2C - Shake It Up with Parkinson s Kelly Willams & Janice Horn Parkinson s disease (PD) is a very complex progressive disease requiring very intricate and at times progressive treatments. We will discuss what PD is, some of it s challenges along with some types of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical strategies to treat it, as well as the importance of challenging the body and mind to help protect the brain. Maintaining a healthy quality of life is at times tricky, and we will discuss the challenges Janice has faced with PD and how she uses art to help manage her symptoms as well as how she has taught others what art can do for them. PD is much more than just shaking, let s shake things up. 3A - From Conflict to Resolution: Dealing with Difficult Volunteers Dawn Bourbonnais Volunteer Manitoba Problem behaviour from difficult volunteers needs to be dealt with so that it doesn t continue, but more importantly, so it doesn t adversely affect your other volunteers. During this workshop you will learn a resolution approach to correct undesirable behaviour while managing your own triggers and ultimately strengthen your volunteer base. 3B - Working Towards Reconciliation Robert Maytwayashing Robert will share Indigenous and Canadian history from a First Nations perspective and experience in order to have a better understanding of the challenges facing the Indigenous community.
