3 Sessions Becca Barrish, LCSW: Becca Barish has a passion for teaching improvisation, both as an art form, and as an effective professional and therapeutic intervention. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Masters in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago, Becca has worked to apply improv in clinical and business settings at Second City through her work as Department Head for the Wellness Program and as a facilitator for Second City Works. Through improv techniques and discussion we will work towards trusting instincts, suspending judgement, building patience, increasing self awareness and communicating effectively Beyond the Gender Binary: Supporting Trans and Gender Nonconforming Youth: Gendered language, policies and practices are wide spread throughout our healthcare system. Gender bias impacts all youth and many report incidences of bullying that are directly related to gender bias. Binary views of gender limit all children and create additional challenges for gender nonconforming and transgender students as well as their families. This workshop provides a safe space for attends to engage in a dialogue with both one another and the facilitator. Attendees will be given tools needed to begin creating safe and affirming environments for all children includes those who fall outside of traditional gender stereotypes. Legacy of Love: Advocating for resources to create meaningful Legacy Projects can be a difficult task when budgets are tight. This presentation will explore the research behind the importance of Legacy work and how they can aide in more effective long-term coping. Additionally, demonstrations and examples of Legacy Projects will be available. Pediatric Ethical Hot Topics for Working with Patients and Families: Do you have questions about Pediatric Ethics? What are the rights of your patients and families? This section will include Chicago area experts leading a discussion about Pediatric Ethics and how Child Life Specialists have a role in ensuring proper support and care for patients and families. Pediatric Therapies and Play: Collaboration in healthcare is imperative in order to provide patients and families with the highest quality care. This collaboration begins with a better understanding of the roles and goals for pediatric therapists. Once this is established the relationship between the Certified Child Life Specialists and pediatric therapist can be shaped to create treatment plans that are play-based and goal oriented and ultimately make therapy a positive experience for all.
4 Sessions (cont.) Make a Wish: When children with life-threatening medical conditions are granted a wish, their spirits are enriched with hope, strength and joy. An explanation of the wish process from identification of pediatric patients with conditions that potential qualify to the referral submission/qualification to wish fulfillment will help the Child Life Specialist understand the overall process. The CLS will also learn how patients benefit from being referred to then program. The purpose of this workshop is to present the wish experience as something more than just a nice experience to have, but as a part of the treatment protocol - as a prescription for healing. While the doctors focus on prescribing the medicine, the CLS can focus on prescribing wishes that are also necessary for psychosocial healing. Narrative Medicine: A Creative Outlet for Promoting Emotional Well-Being: The focus of this session will be to learn about how writing about stressful events can increase emotional well-being for ourselves, patients and their families. In additional this session will help attendees understand the science of narrative medicine and participate in a creative writing experience. Attendees will leave this session with a greater awareness of Narrative Medicine. Chicagoland Child Life Panel: Talk with some of the directors and senior child life specialists in the Chicagoland area to find out about their programs, internships and current issues. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions in a professional panel/open forum discussion format. The goal of this panel is to support current CCLS s, students considering going into the field of Child Life and those professionals that collaborate with Child Life Specialists on a regular basis. Rivers Know This: An examination of grief across the lifespan: Our understanding of grief and bereavement has grown and changed since Kubler-Ross introduced the 5 Stages of Grief. In fact, research shows that restricting grief to a cycle or specific stages is not the best way to articulate what grief actually looks and feels like for the grieving. Thom Dennis s research on grief led to the creation of Grief River - a new approach to understanding grief for adults and children. Choose Your Own Adventure: The focus of this presentation will be to encourage attendees to take the time and necessary steps to help them destress and realize that being stressed is a choice they have the power to overcome.
