1 North and Central Florida Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Partnership Newsletter Issue 2 In This Issue... Introduction, Announcements, & Upcoming Events Meet Our Evaluation Team: Introduction & Key Personnel Overview of Three NCF-GWEP Projects Next Issue Highlights 7 A Note From the PI, Dr. Paul Katz We have recently completed our first year of funding for the North and Central Florida Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Partnership (NCF GWEP) and are delighted to have achieved all of our stated goals in the allo ed me frame. The Florida State University College of Medicine (FSU COM) Department of Geriatrics is indebted to our community based and academic partners who have worked so diligently over the past year to transform ideas on paper into reality. All of the projects that comprise the NCF GWEP have already had a significant impact on students, health care professionals and the lay public which bodes well for a posi ve impact on future clinical prac ce and overall quality of care. While this edi on of the newsle er focuses specifically on the Transforming Rural and Underserved Care Environments, Interprofessional Educa on, and Nurse Workforce Enhancement Projects, ac vi es related to the other three projects are also noteworthy. For example, Dr. Antonio Terracciano has leveraged Powerful Tools for Caregivers Project ac vi es to garner addi onal research funding from the Florida Department of Health. Dr. Terracciano hopes to empirically examine the benefits of a structured caregiver training program on both the caregiver and care recipient. In May of this year, Dr. Ken Brummel Smith highlighted the Transforming Rural and Underserved Care Environments Project s goals and preliminary accomplishments at the annual American Geriatrics Society mee ng in Long Beach California. Efforts to geriatricize a federally qualified rural health clinic generated significant interest and may well lead to new collabora ve ini a ves. This year looks every bit as exci ng as the first for the NCF GWEP. We will con nue to explore new partnerships in order to further strengthen Florida's health care workforce in addi on to improving the quality of care and quality of life for the state's burgeoning older adult popula on. Issue 2 March 2016-September 2016
2 Key NCF-GWEP Persons Meet Our Evaluation Team Antonio Terracciano, PhD Associate Professor For more than a decade, Suzanne Baker has been involved in the administration and management of many social science and medicine related research studies. Since 2011, she has been the Research Program Director for the Department of Geriatrics. She has expertise in working with institutional review boards, establishing guidelines for research activity compliance and ethics, training research assistants, and networking with community partners on research activities. In addition, she has expertise in a wide range of research skills, including study and survey design. Dr. Terracciano has worked for over a decade in the aging and health research area. Before his current faculty position in the Department of Geriatrics, he worked in the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute on Aging (NIA). His research aims to individuate factors that contribute to health and longevity, by reducing health risk behaviors and promoting resilience against diseases of aging, such as Alzheimer s disease. His extensive publication record demonstrates his expertise to work with, analyze, and evaluate complex data sets. Suzanne Baker, MA Research Director LaVon Edgerton Research Coordinator The evaluation team is responsible for working with the six project leads to design evaluation metrics, collect evaluation data, run analyses, and create summary evaluation reports. They also summarize and report evaluation findings to the co-principal investigators and Steering Committee to inform ongoing project implementation and development. Evaluation data and outcomes are reviewed to facilitate quality improvement efforts for each project. Since 2012, LaVon has been an integral part of the department s research and scholarly activities. In her role as the department s Research Coordinator, she writes and creates research protocols, informed consents, and marketing materials; ensures grant applications meet funding and submission criteria; and manages faculty scholarly activities. Before joining the Department of Geriatrics, LaVon was a health educator consultant at the Florida Department of Health. She was solely responsible for providing technical assistance for evidence-based programs to statewide community partners and managing the collection of data for grant evaluation and reporting activities.
