2 Event Details The CAMH Addictions Program proudly presents its second annual Clinical Day. Clinical Day is a one-day event designed to provide education and training on evidence-based practices in addiction treatment, while sharing information about enhancing access to addiction services. We invite health care practitioners and community partners to join us for an interactive learning experience where information sharing, dialogue and networking will take place. Our workshops in addiction treatment cover a range of key topics such as trauma and addiction treatment, assessment and management of self-harm behaviour, internet/cyber addiction, chronic pain and opioid dependence, the neurochemistry of addiction, cultural competence for concurrent disorders, mindfulness in addiction treatment, and exploring clinical ethical dilemmas in addiction treatment. In addition, our Poster Presentations will showcase the range of services available within the Addictions Program. We are hosting this Clinical Day to share knowledge about the latest clinical practices and research findings in addiction treatment and to enhance awareness of the array of treatment services in CAMH s Addictions Program. We hope you can join us. Keynote Presentation Five Essential Strategies in Motivating Clients to Change Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based approach for a range of health behaviours and conditions, including addiction and mental health. MI has been described as simple but not easy, with hundreds of publications in the literature outlining the underlying spirit and clinical strategies. How to make sense of all this? What are the key applications that practitioners need to know? In this dynamic and thought-provoking session, Dr. Herie will share her "Top 5" motivational strategies with an emphasis on practical tips and tools. This presentation will leave you refreshed and motivated in working with even your most challenging clients! 1. Identify practical strategies to motivate change 2. Reflect on how you can adapt these strategies with your clients 3. Set concrete objectives for clinical practice Dr. Marilyn Herie, PhD, RSW, has worked in a variety of clinical and leadership roles at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) since 1992, and is director of the TEACH Project, a University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine Certificate Program in Cessation Counselling. She is also director of the University of Toronto s Collaborative Program in Addiction Studies and assistant professor (Status Only) at the Faculty of Social Work at U of T. Marilyn has taught graduate and undergraduate university courses for the past 10 years, and facilitated professional training workshops throughout Canada and internationally. She has co-authored books, book chapters and articles in scholarly journals on brief treatment, motivational interviewing, alcohol dependence, relapse prevention, dissemination research and online learning, and is first author of the 2010 Oxford University Press book Substance Abuse in Canada. Her areas of interest include motivation and behaviour change, interprofessional education, and knowledge transfer/exchange.

4 Parallel Workshop Descriptions (10:30 12:00) Choose one: From Trauma to Recovery: Group Psychotherapy for Childhood Trauma and Concurrent Substance Abuse Pamela Stewart, MD, FRCPC, psychiatrist and clinic head, Trauma and Addiction Clinic, Addictions Program; assistant professor, addictions co-ordinator for post graduate residents and fellows in the Dept. of Psychiatry, University of Toronto Clients with concurrent trauma and addiction issues are one of the most prevalent subpopulations seen in Addiction Services. Best practice advice for the specialized treatment of concurrent PTSD and substance use disorder recommends using an integrated approach that deals with substance use and mental health at the same time; Seeking Safety (Najavits, 2002) is a prime example of this approach. 1. Understand the epidemiology and historical links between PTSD and substance use 2. Understand the stages of trauma and substance use recovery 3. Be introduced to some of the group treatment models and challenges in this developing field Chronic Pain and Opiate Dependence Clive Chamberlain, MD, FRCPC, psychiatrist, CAMH Addictions Program Non-malignant chronic pain can be a difficult problem to treat. Often individuals with such issues find themselves reliant on opioid drugs, either because they have been prescribed them for extended periods of time, leading to dependence, or because they have turned to these substances in the absence of other effective treatments for these chronic problems. 1. Understand the nature of chronic pain the diverse forms that it can take 2. Learn the distinction between dependence and addiction 3. Recognize Opioid Dependence as a risk factor in people with chronic pain 4. Learn about screening and assessing co-occurring chronic pain and opioid dependence 5. Learn treatment alternatives for people with concurrent chronic pain and opioid dependence 6. Hear about recent initiatives to create improved clinical practices to better serve people with pain and addiction Can You Be Addicted to the Internet? An Exploration of Excessive Online Behaviour Lisa Pont, MSW, RSW, trainer therapist, CAMH Problem Gambling Institute of Ontario (PGIO) The concept of internet addiction is receiving increasing attention in the media. Addiction and mental health practitioners may be seeing clients who report spending a great deal of time online despite some adverse consequences. Given the ever increasing access to technology and the diverse activities available online, clients who are vulnerable to excessive behaviours may be at-risk of developing (or may already have) a problem with overuse. 1. Learn about the concept of internet addiction 2. Identify interventions used with this client population 3. Receive an overview of CAMH services for this population Cultural Competency and Concurrent Disorders: Understanding Through Culture Ann Pottinger, MSc, advanced practice nurse, CAMH Lorrie Simunovic, BA, community, health and education specialist at CAMH with a focus on diversity and health equity education This session focuses on the exploration of culturally competent care and its application in working in the practice area of concurrent disorders. A framework for cultural competence will be presented. Participants will be encouraged to draw upon aspects of the framework and their professional expertise and experiences to guide critical reflection on the importance of and ways to integrate cultural assessments in service and care. This session is geared toward health care providers working in the area of concurrent disorders who wish to have an enhanced understanding of cultural competence and strategies for practice application. 1. Describe cultural competence components and their application in practice 2. Examine a cultural competence framework to guide practice 3. Discuss ways to weave cultural competence throughout practice and service

5 Parallel Workshop Descriptions (1:00 2:30) Choose one: Assessment and Management of Self-Harm Behaviour Robert Cardish, MD, FRCP(C), psychiatrist, Borderline Personality Disorder Clinic, CAMH Centralized Assessment and Triage Program Self-harm behaviour is common in the population and often occurs in people who abuse substances. The treatment of individuals who self-harm can be challenging for caregivers who may respond with intense feelings of shock, horror or helplessness when faced with this behaviour. Selfharm may be associated with suicide risk further complicating the management of these individuals. 1.Be able to analyze the function of self-harm behaviour in an individual 2.Know what information is required to assess the risk of suicide 3.Understand the principles of management of self-harm Awake for Living: How Mindfulness Can Enhance Addiction Treatment Kirstin Bindseil, MSW, RSW, advanced practice clinician, CAMH Addictions Program Over the last 20 years, mindfulness-based therapies have been developed for almost every clinical sector. Many authors have written about mindfulness in relation to craving, temptation and substance use. Recently, Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) has been added to the clinical offering in addiction treatment. Although relaxation is very beneficial for substance use concerns, mindfulness offers another set of skills that can be incorporated into group and individual work. 1. Review definitions of mindfulness 2. Review new elements from the Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) approach 3. Discuss how mindfulness is used in complex clinical application Muddling Through : Clinically and Ethically Sound Practice for Addiction Workers Wayne Skinner, MSW, RSW, deputy clinical director, CAMH Addictions Program Barbara Russell, PhD, MBA, CAMH bioethicist Models of addiction treatment vary considerably both within and across clinical settings, and the ethical principles that are meant to guide the work are numerous. Addiction workers find such variability both confusing and impractical. This session explores the clinical ethical dilemmas of workers lived experiences in their daily work. Presenters will draw on classical (Aristotle) and contemporary (Arthur Frank) ethical insights to guide practical, yet compassionate action for front-line clinical situations. 1. Explore the lived experience of everyday clinical encounters 2. Explain how the metaphor muddling through helps reveal ethically rich foundations of addictions work 3. Explain ethics-related ideas of Aristotle and Arthur Frank 4. Examine how the metaphor muddling through is a useful ethical concept for addiction workers lived experiences in their work life The Addicted Brain: From Neurochemistry to Behaviour Caroline Wass, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow, CAMH Schizophrenia Program Substance use disorders are becoming more commonly viewed as chronic illnesses of the brain. This workshop will begin by reviewing the brain systems and mechanisms involved in drug addiction. This session will also discuss the brain reward pathways and how they contribute to initiation and maintenance of, and relapse to, addictive behaviours. Contributing factors and vulnerability markers for addictions, as well as existing and anticipated drug treatments, will also be reviewed. Persons with psychiatric disorders are specifically vulnerable to addictions and will be discussed as one example of a population with special needs. This session will be interactive and will also involve an Ask the Doctor segment for any questions you may have. 1.Become aware of the risk factors contributing to addictive behaviour 2.Become familiarized with the brain mechanisms contributing to the initiation and maintenance of, and relapse into, drug addiction 3.Increase the awareness of psychiatric populations particularly vulnerable to drug addiction
