3 Chris Weekly Spot Feeling depressed? What have you been eating? When you visit a psychiatrist or counsellor you don t normally get asked What did you have for dinner? But this will change!!! There is a growing body of research that emphasises that your diet does definitely influence your mood and that a healthy diet can prevent depression. Recent, research shows that not only can a healthy diet prevent depression, but it can effectively treat depression in an individual as well. In a recent Australian study 67 people with depression were chosen, most of whom were already being treated with medication and counselling therapy. Half of these people were given nutritional counselling from a dietitian. Half were given one-on-one social support someone they could chat to and who was there to listen and encourage. After 12 weeks, the people who improved their diets showed significantly happier moods than those who received social support. And the people whose diets were most healthy, were those whose moods improved the most. These findings and others from similar research studies have spurred the growth of a new field - nutritional psychiatry - whereby the effect of diet on mental health is considered as part of therapy. Depression has many causes it may be genetic, triggered by a specific event, or brought on by lifestyle choices. But it s really about an unhealthy brain. In order to combat or treat depression effectively we need to Strengthen the brain. A healthy diet can do just that!!! A bad diet makes depression worse, failing to provide the brain with the variety of nutrients it needs. And many processed or deep-fried foods often contain trans fats that promote inflammation. Inflammation is believed to be a causative factor of depression. A bad diet also affects our microbiome the trillions of micro-organisms that live in our gut. The good and bad bacteria in our gut have complex ways to communicate with our brain and change our mood. We need a healthy diet to maximize the good bacteria and minimize the bad.

The research points to a Mediterranean-style diet made up primarily of fruits and vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, yoghurt and cheese, legumes, nuts, seafood, whole grains and small portions of lean red meat. Prebiotic foods such as raw onion, garlic, asparagus, bananas and oats are important also to feed the healthy microbes in our gut and probiotic foods such as yoghurt, sauerkraut and other fermented foods replenish the good bacteria in our guts. The complexity of this diet will provide the nutrition our brain needs, keep inflammation low and keep our gut microbiome healthy. Can a good diet replace medicine or therapy? Sometimes yes. If not, it can be used as an effective adjunct therapy to enhance other modalities of treatment. The advantages of a healthy diet are that it has no bad side effects unlike medications used to treat depression. As well as improving your mood it has the other added benefits of increased energy, weight control and the prevention of chronic conditions such as heart disease, obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Happy mood, happy body, happy heart what more reasons do you need to eat healthily???
