3 Introduction PERIscope is Bord Bia s comprehensive review of food attitudes, shopping and cooking trends amongst a nationally representative sample of adults. In previous waves of the research, biennial studies were produced for /NI/ and for other European countries (including France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, New Zealand and the US). In 2015, the countries were amended and research was conducted in,, France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands and the US. In addition, China was a new market added in In 2013, Bord Bia took the decision to combine both studies in order to obtain a more detailed perspective on how consumers view food related issues and report their behaviours across 10 countries. PERIscope 2017 therefore, as in 2013 and 2015, provides research findings for the / and Continental study in one year. Over the various studies we have held many questions constant to allow tracking over time; we also include topical issues as they arise. This deck is designed to provide a thorough flavour of the PERIscope 2017 results for and (NI was not included in the PERIscope 2017 study). The charts included represent the study results. More detailed information is available in the tabular reports. 3

4 Research Method Face-to-face survey conducted by Ipsos MRBI on behalf of Bord Bia. Interviews in respondents own home by fully trained interviewers. The research was conducted among a representative sample of adults aged 15+ in the Republic of Ireland, and 16+ in Great Britain. Quotas were set on sex, age, region and social class to ensure a representative sample. Sample sizes: Republic of Ireland () 1,004 Great Britain () 1,078 Fieldwork was conducted between March and April Please note, there may be discrepancies in relation to some of the total figures within this report. This is due to rounding (e.g. slightly agree at 45, strongly agree at 30, agree at 76). Where new statements have been added or in instances where question wording and/or format may have changed, missing data is represented by. 4

16 Attitudes Towards Food

17 Attitudes Towards Food: Summary Ownership of Nutri/Magic Bullets and coffee makers record increases in 2017 in both and ; in contrast, ownership of deep fat fryers continues to fall steadily. Having a kettle at home is almost universal in both markets which is in sharp contrast to the situation in other countries measured. In the USA, for example, only 4 in 10 have a kettle at home. Almost all adults in and maintain they try to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, and 3 in 4 try to avoid sugary foods/sweets. Irish adults are more likely to claim that they try to eat more hi-fibre foods, whereas adults appear to have a slightly more adventurous outlook on food, with more than 8 in 10 saying they like to try new foods. Interestingly, only a third of Irish consumers say that they rarely have time for breakfast, whereas this rises to almost half of adults. consumers are more likely to buy in to purchasing and consuming convenience foods. While most Irish adults agree they are more likely to pick foods that are easy to cook/prepare, fewer are suggesting that they eat ready prepared/convenience meals. In both and, while about half consider frozen and chilled food to be about the same, the balance of opinion is that chilled food is better than frozen. An average of two portions of dairy products are consumed in both markets on a daily basis; whereas 4 portions of fruit and vegetables are eaten. The number of consumers who are eating just one or two portions of fruit and veg a day has halved since 2005; now, only 1 in 5 claim to eat one or two portions of fruit and veg a day. The same shift in consumption patterns is not evident in. Herbs are the most popular produce grown in and gardens or allotments. Growing vegetables is slightly more common in. 1 in 8 grow their own fruit in both countries. 17

40 Attitudes Towards Cooking

41 Attitudes Towards Cooking: Summary In keeping with previous years, adults continue to boast a greater level of culinary expertise than those in, with two thirds of residents claiming that they would be confident to cook a Sunday roast with all the trimmings/would enjoy hosting a dinner party where they do all the cooking. Although in both and, cooking at the weekends is more enjoyable than during the week, in general, adults are more likely to enjoy cooking, whereas Irish adults are more likely to associate cooking with the importance of eating well. The incidence of taking cooking classes is limited to a small minority of adults. Classes are more popular among younger (Under 25 years) adults, although their popularity appears to have waned somewhat in in recent years. Almost half of consumers say they prepare food from scratch at least once a day, compared with a third of consumers in. Nevertheless, 1 in 5 adults say they are cooking meals from scratch more often compared with 12 months ago, a slightly higher number than in. Baking remains something of a lost art for the majority of adults in both and, with half the population admitting never to have baked, although there are slightly higher participation rates compared with previous measures. adults are more likely to use cake/bread mixes; 1 in 5 claim to use these at least once a month twice the incidence recorded in. Oven baked/roasted, boiled and grilled are the most popular methods of food preparation in home, across and. Convenience meals continue to remain more popular in than, with over half of adults believing they are a good substitute for home cooking when time is limited. Over 4 in 10 claim to always have convenience meals at home, more than double the proportion in. The use of ready prepared ingredients is also higher in ; nearly 6 in 10 use these at least weekly, compared with less than half in. In both markets, however, significantly more adults claim they are eating less convenience foods now than 12 months ago. When eating, and preparing food in home, taste and quality emerge as the most important factors in both and. In, consumers place slightly more emphasis on freshness and safety of food. 41
