2 U C S F O T O L A R Y N G O L O G Y U P D AT E : An outstanding group of faculty will discuss technical advances in the fields of rhinology and sinus surgery, head and neck oncologic surgery, laryngology, otology/neurotology, pediatric otolaryngology, sleep apnea, and facial plastic surgery. This is a symposium dedicated to the state-of-the-art with an emphasis on new diagnostic and treatment methods, new technology, and new surgical strategies for the contemporary practice of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. Policy, politics, government, and professional societies will also be a topic of discussion. The target audience for the course is practicing otolaryngologists. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program participants should be able to: Effectively manage and surgically treat sinus disease with a specific emphasis on balloon technology, sublingual immunotherapy, difficult to treat sinus disease, and new treatment strategies; Improve clinical methods used in the diagnostic work up of thyroid cancer and head and neck tumors including PET scans, ultrasound, and viral HPV titers, and discuss an evidence-based approach to the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in surgery; Improve management of patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss and vertigo; Increase competence in the application of new technology being developed to treat tinnitus; Accurately consider new guidelines for tonsillectomy and be aware of the role of tonsillar hypertrophy in sleep apnea and ADHD; Increase knowledge of the special circumstances of Down s Syndrome as it relates to Otolaryngology to effect improved patient care; Increase awareness of issues in laryngology including endoscopic approaches to the treatment of Zenker s repair, chronic cough, and new treatments for recurrent respiratory papillomatosis; Improve awareness of the role of bisphosphonates in the etiology of osteonecrosis of the jaw and potential treatment and avoidance options; Increase knowledge of the Obama healthcare plan, E&M documentation standards, and attributes of professionalism. ACCREDITATION The University of California, School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. UCSF designates this educational activity for a maximum of 18 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physician should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This CME activity meets the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1195, continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency.
