8 The Need for Cures Demonstrate a commitment to solving health-care challenges impacting your employees and their loved ones. 1 out of every 16 Americans over the age of 40 has one of the three diseases BrightFocus is working to cure. Every 66 seconds someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer s disease. More than 5 million Americans now have Alzheimer s, and it is the only disease among the top 10 causes of death in America that cannot be prevented, cured, or even slowed. As many as 11 million people in the US have age-related macular degeneration. An estimated 3 million Americans have glaucoma but only half know they have it. Rising healthcare costs coupled with an aging population means that every employer is going to share the burden of these diseases. Partnering with BrightFocus Foundation will demonstrate your organization s commitment to solving the important health care challenges and unmet health needs impacting your employees and their loved ones every day. AT LEAST 1 in 16 people in the U.S. over the age of 40 has one or more of these three diseases. 8
