1 Support Education Advocacy Research November 2017 Compassion. Hope. Commitment. These are some of the reasons people participated in NAMI Southwest Missouri s Suicide Prevention 5K Neon Night Run/Walk. This is not just about saying we care but actually showing, in our day to day actions, that we genuinely care about one another. Each one of us needs to be aware of our coworkers, our battle buddies, friends and family and to look for signs that let us know when to intervene and prevent suicides, says Stephanie Appleby, Director of Marketing and Development for NAMI Southwest Missouri. This year s event had record breaking numbers. "The fact that so many people showed up displays their passion and willingness to help deal with this very serious epidemic, says Appleby. 3 Story of Impact My journey through madness started when I was nineteen. A slight tease of the mind, and some manipulation, then all went black. At the hospital I awoke with a thin layer of clothing, socks of the hefty design, and no shoe laces to hang myself. I realized I was at the bottom of society. Some words awoke my inner tension, when a doctor declared I was bright. But, to be granted the chance to be healed meant medicine. No one, before this point in my life, told me I was intelligent. So in a wordless need to refine my mind I double majored at Drury, and started a lawn mowing company. The setbacks were immense, when at the age of 24, I drank bleach in an attempt to kill myself in front of my parents. However, the liquid I put in my body was detergent. Let s just say for the next year I was burping bubbles. In 2011 my battle with medicine ended with my doctor prescribing Latuda. Even though I ve suffered, my faith in Jesus, family, and friends at NAMI SWMO prevailed over the menacing mindset of Paranoid Schizophrenia. Hope Center Memoirs of the Mind With over 50 pieces of art and 35+ in attendance at the premier, folks from the Hope Center and the community came out to view the wonderful art at the Memoirs of the Mind Art Exhibit event October 6, 2017! 3

4 MAY 2018! NAMIWalks 2018 NAMI Southwest Missouri will be a part of this 2018 event! Every journey begins with that first step. This year, more than 50 thousand people in more than 80 communities across the nation will join NAMI and walk together to raise awareness of mental illness and raise funds for local, regional and state NAMI organizations. Each NAMIWalks event brings together people of all ages and fitness levels for a fun 5K walk event. Those who are unable to walk with us are welcome to register and participate as a volunteer or virtual walker. NAMI Southwest Missouri s NAMIWalks event website is live so check back regularly for updates and to find out when registration opens. Registration is required, but there is no registration fee. Instead, participants are encouraged to build teams and raise funds to support the work that we provide locally. Participants raising $100 or more will receive a NAMIWalks T-shirt on Walk Day.
