WELCOME Dear colleagues, It is our pleasure to announce that the first International Conference on Myeolid Cells and HIV is tentatively scheduled to take place on 1-3 September 2018 at Lake Maggiore,

4 WELCOME Dear colleagues, It is our pleasure to announce that the first International Conference on Myeolid Cells and HIV is tentatively scheduled to take place on 1-3 September 2018 at Lake Maggiore, Italy. Over the years, eradication of HIV-1 has become more and more complex with the majority of research focusing on T cell reservoirs. However, myeloid cells are permissive to HIV-1 infection in vitro and in vivo yet the contribution of myeloid cells to HIV-1 persistence in the face of suppressive ART, is an understudied area. The source of viral rebound when treatment is interrupted, is not well understood. Furthermore, it is unclear what assays have the greatest ability to inform on the reservoirs that maintain HIV-1 persistence under ART. The goal of the International Conference on Myeloid Cells & HIV 2018 is to assemble researchers and healthcare professionals to share and discuss the latest knowledge and advances in the field of HIV reservoirs and move the field forward. Raymond Schinazi, PhD, DSc Meeting Co-Chair Delegates will be provided with a unique opportunity to identify current roadblocks and to outline future research needed to overcome these barriers, and will ultimately catalyze research for new and innovative solutions. Given the increase in therapeutic options, clinicians and researchers will clearly benefit from the opportunity to be informed and to discuss the newest data and their implications for clinical practice. This meeting aims at bridging the gap between the knowledge that is shared among experts in the field and the knowledge of healthcare professionals and clinicians in daily practice an optimal setting for regional clinicians, researchers and pharmaceutical companies to meet each other and share knowledge. 5 MEETING DESCRIPTION NEEDS STATEMENT TARGET AUDIENCE Comparatively less appreciated than the role of T cells in the context of HIV infection, the myeloid cells, including macrophages monocytes, dendritic cells (DCs) and neutrophils, contribute significantly to immune dysfunction (Mehraj V, 2014). After years of research on CD4 T and other lymphoid cells, recent studies point to the emergence of the myeloid cells as central players in HIV pathogenesis (Aggarwal A, 2013) (Anzinger JJ, 2014). Most studies have designed HIV eradication strategies focused primarily on targeting resting memory CD4+ T cells (Siliciano JD, 2003). While much has been learned about the mechanisms of HIV-1 latency and persistence in resting CD4+ T cells, there is a limited understanding of how HIV-1 persists in monocytes, macrophages and other cells of myeloid origin. There is a very limited body of research regarding the role of myeloid cells in HIV-1 persistence under ART (Jonah B. Sacha, 2016). If myeloid cells are indeed a viral reservoir, therapeutic interventions to eradicate HIV-1 might have to target different types of cells and delivery mechanisms or targeting strategies will need to be tailored to myeloid cells. Studies are needed to determine whether myeloid cells support HIV-1 persistence. These studies include approaches to evaluating the myeloid cell reservoir in relevant anatomic sites (e.g. CNS, gut, lung, lymph nodes). It will also be important to establish whether infected myeloid cells are subject to the host immune clearance forces such as CTL and whether shock and kill approaches are effective against infected myeloid cells. Health care professionals, researchers, virologists and pharmacologists involved in HIV research. The expected number of delegates for this meeting is 100 to 150. PROGRAM FORMAT The meeting will consist of invited lectures, abstract-driven presentations and round-table discussions, discussing the role of myeloid cells in HIV infection. By sharing knowledge, coordinating various activities, and working through the complex issues surrounding Myeloid Cells and HIV infections, the workshop aims at advancing the field. Despite the progress that has been made, there is an urgent need to develop new and improved therapeutic strategies and to facilitate indepth discussion and exchange about the latest research in this field. New therapeutic strategies that place emphasis on targeting non-cd4+ T cell reservoir contributions to the HIV-1 reservoir will be imperative on the road to HIV-1 eradication. The proper knowledge of the characteristics of the reservoir, and of the cells involved in the mechanisms of latency/ persistency, will aid clinicians to design therapeutic strategies aimed at achieving the greatest control of HIV replication and activity, in view of innovative options aimed at pursuing strategies of cure. 5

6 MEETING DESCRIPTION MEETING OBJECTIVES The objectives of this meeting are to: Gather cross-disciplinary professionals in an interactive workshop setting to present and discuss the latest developments in the field of myeloid cells and HIV Facilitate a neutral exchange of scientific knowledge regarding myeloid cells and HIV-1 Review the gaps in evidence on HIV-1 infection & tissue-specific reservoirs, including the central nervous system, gut and other sites LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this activity, delegates will be able to: Identify the mechanisms of HIV-1-persistence in cells of the myeloid lineage including but not limited to perivascular macrophages ACCREDITATION The conference will be organized and implemented in accordance with the Essentials and Standards of the ACCME. Emory University School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. In the development and presentation of the program, Emory University School of Medicine will adhere to all rules, regulations and guidelines of the ACCME, AMA, AAMC, FDA and OIG that govern the conduct of accredited CME activities. All scientific materials presented during this conference will be objective and show fair balance as to the range of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities Describe the mechanisms of transcription of HIV-1 in cells of myeloid origin and the role of restriction factors Discuss strategies for targeting persisting HIV-1 in the myeloid cells with optimal drug penetration profiles and immune effector cells Discuss techniques to quantify the impact of HIV-1 cure and eradication interventions on the myeloid reservoir ASSESSMENT METHOD To assess the meeting, Virology Education provides each delegate with a detailed feedback form where they can assess the speakers, whether or not the meeting objectives were met, their intent to change, the rationale behind their motivation to attend, the general logistics of the meeting, and much more. All the questions are then fully analyzed and a comprehensive report is created and shared with the committee members. These reports help us better understand our delegates and how to make the next meeting better. For a maximum response rate, we invite the chairs of each session to encourage the participants to take a few minutes and complete the feedback forms. We are also introducing a web-based application to allow participants access to the feedback forms electronically. 6

All applications include a CV, a motivation letter, and potentially an abstract (requirements vary depending on the workshop). These are submitted via an independent CPG portal and are evaluated against the assessment criteria using robust, impartial and independent peer review processes by the Grant Review Committee. This process will ensure that only the highest quality, most relevant and most competitive research is accepted. The grants are supported by the financial contributions allocated by the sponsor, who, has no control, influence, or involvement in the selection process of the attendees whatsoever. Priority is given to applicants who have actively participated in original research or scientific work that is being presented at the meeting and/or those who will profit most from participating in order to improve their daily clinical management. These grants help defray costs for registration, travel and accommodation for delegates and foster their ability to form valuable professional networks and develop vital collaborations. Conference participation grant applications will be solicited, selected and awarded by an expert Grant Review Committee. Please note that the TITANIUM, PLATINUM and GOLD support levels will reduce the costs for conference participation grants. 7
