1 INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON HIV ADOLESCENCE CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA OCTOBER 2018 MEETING PROSPECTUS

2 WELCOME Dear Colleague, We are proud to announce the 2nd International Workshop on HIV Adolescence to be held in October, Cape Town, South Africa. Adolescents are developmentally at a difficult crossroad, which makes it challenging to attract and sustain adolescents focus on maintaining their health. Every effort must be made to engage and retain adolescents in care so they can improve and maintain their health for the long term. The medical advances that have transformed HIV treatment into a manageable disease have yet to alter the stark reality for young people, particularly in low to middle-income countries, such as those in Sub-Saharan Africa, and young people within key populations. Even as AIDS-related mortality has decreased overall in recent years, AIDS-related deaths among adolescents increased by 50%. AIDS, in other words, is far from over - especially for young people. Linda-Gail Bekker MBChB, DTMH, DCH, FCP(SA), PhD Chair At major meetings, advances in HIV management focuses mainly on either adults or children, leaving out this key group of individuals the adolescents. To meet this need for international interchange in order to bring the field forward, we have initiated the International Workshop on HIV & Adolescence: challenges and solutions. This workshop is set up as an inclusive summit for multidisciplinary experts working with adolescents affected by HIV. The objective will be to share experiences, knowledge and best practices with the aim of defining a pathway forward for optimizing care for adolescents living with HIV. The program will cover the entire spectrum of developmental changes in adolescents including social, behavioral, physiological and biological aspects and the impact of an HIV positive status. Prevention programs, testing, treatment and support services among adolescents shall be discussed. The barriers encountered in delivering these services and ways to mitigate these barriers shall be key areas of discussion during the workshop. Charles Boucher, MD, PhD Chair Linda-Gail Bekker, Charles Boucher & Helen Rees #HIVADOLESCENCE2018 Helen Rees OBE, MB BChir, MA (CANTAB), MRCGP, DCH, DRCOG Chair 2

3 MEETING DESCRIPTION NEEDS ASSESSMENT The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 10.3 million youth are living with HIV/AIDS (most without knowing that they are infected) and half of all new infections are occurring among young people globally. Furthermore, adolescents and young people account for 40% of all new HIV infections each year, making them the drivers of the epidemic. The number of adolescents living with HIV rose by 28% between 2005 and 2015 while those dying due to AIDS-related illnesses tripled in the same period, the only age group with an increased death rate. AIDS is now the second leading cause of death among young people worldwide.[1],[2] Significant data gaps exist in the knowledge of HIV among adolescents and young people. This is particularly due to a lack of involvement of adolescents in clinical trials, challenges in obtaining parental approval for their involvement in surveys, as well as a lack of age-appropriate questions. Where data does exist, limited sample sizes and a lack of disaggregation restricts the available evidence to sufficiently influence programming initiatives. In part because of these gaps, adolescents and young people are often excluded from national HIV strategic plans, particularly for interventions beyond PMTCT.[3],[4] TARGET AUDIENCE An array of stakeholders who work with adolescents. This workshop shall attract the following delegates: Clinicians and other HCP s involved in care of HIV infected Adolescents Researchers Adolescents Policy makers Community representatives (Non-) Government representatives Excluding vertical transmission, young people are particularly vulnerable to HIV transmission. Their vulnerability is increased through multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination and structural inequality. [2],[5], [6] The following factors have been identified as the primary causes that place young people at an elevated risk of HIV acquisition: unprotected sex with multiple sexual partners early sex debut older partners being part of key populations (sex workers, transgender people, men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs). Linda Gail Bekker invites you to join the meeting on HIV Adolescence and be part of the growing community committed to make a difference Although major advances have been achieved in the clinical care of HIV infected patients, this is not the case for the adolescent group. Tailored programs for all aspects of HIV care (prevention, testing, treatment and support services) still need to be developed To catalyse these much-needed developments, the International Workshop on HIV Adolescence: challenges and solutions was initiated. 3

4 MEETING DESCRIPTION PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The 1st day of the workshop is set up as an exclusive summit for multidisciplinary experts working with adolescents affected by HIV. The goal of the first day is to invite all the key players in the field to discuss how to move the HIV Adolescence field forward. On the 2nd and 3rd day the aim is to share experiences, knowledge and best practices in order to optimize care for HIV infected adolescents. Topics will include therapy considerations, adherence concerns and transitioning care. The program shall consist of plenary lectures presented by renowned invited speakers, round table discussions, group work, roundtable discussions & case presentations. Ample time is allocated to Q&A and discussion to foster an intimate and interactive workshop. Adolescent participation in this workshop is highly valued. MEETING OBJECTIVES & GOALS To identify barriers and to develop approaches to overcome these barriers; To present overviews on the state of medical, social/behavioural and biological issues in relation to HIV infected adolescents; To share experiences and knowledge on challenges in treating HIV infected adolescents; To translate best practices to treatment guidelines; To stimulate networking and building collaborations. ASSESSMENT METHOD To assess the meeting, Virology Education provides each delegate with a detailed feedback form where they can assess the speakers, whether or not the meeting objectives were met, their intent to change, the rationale behind their motivation to attend, the general logistics of the meeting, and much more. All the questions are then fully analyzed and a comprehensive report is created and shared with the committee members. These reports help us better understand our delegates and how to make the next meeting better. For a maximum response rate, we invite the chairs of each session to encourage the participants to take a few minutes and complete the feedback forms. We are also introducing a web-based application to allow participants access to the feedback forms electronically. LEARNING OUTCOMES / IMPACT After participating in this activity, the delegates will: Click on the video below to get a glimpse of the workshop s highly interactive format Understand the physiology, neurodevelopmental and mental health issues in the adolescent age group; Understand the networks around adolescents and their influence; Outline the general and sexual risks in the life of an adolescent; Describe what has been done so far in adolescencts HIV treatment. After joining this meeting, delegates will be able to incorporate the newly learned knowledge to the clinical care of their patients. Moreover, non-hcp participants will have gained profound knowledge to make appropriate adjustments to policies in public, institutional and private settings. 4
