2 NEEDS ASSESSMENT NEEDS ASSESSMENT Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an emerging liver disease affecting 25 % of the population worldwide. In 10% of patients, NAFLD progresses into NASH, a fibrogenic phenotype that can potentially result in cirrhosis, liver failure and the formation of hepatocellular carcinoma. Although NAFLD is globally the most prevalent chronic liver disease and the second leading indication for liver transplant evaluation in the US 1, knowledge concerning the molecular mechanisms favoring the development and progression of the disease are not fully understood. Current understanding supports the hypothesis that environmental and genetic factors equally influence disease progression. Considering the far-reaching societal and economic burden caused by NAFLD, it is of utmost importance to identify and subsequently implement guidelines to stage, diagnose and treat the disease efficiently. In particular, there is an unmet need for approved drugs that allow the pharmacological treatment of (pre-)cirrhotic NASH. By using surrogate endpoints, the drug approval process for NASH is accelerated and approved agents are expected to enter the market in the near future 2. In detail, several agents, such as the agonist of farnesoid X receptor obeticholic acid (OCA), the dual PPARa/d agonist GFT505 or the ACC inhibitor GS4997 are currently in phase 3 clinical trials and due to their promising data expected to become available by Besides the need to assess these new treatment options for their safety, it is crucial to prepare and train clinicians and other key stakeholders accordingly. Additional gaps include the development of easy, reliable and non-invasive biomarkers to be used during diagnosis, treatment and also monitoring of disease progression. In line with this, the clinical and diagnostic validation of biomarkers were identified as the most pressing needs the NASH field suffers from. These results were obtained in a needs assessment survey conducted among key experts attending our NASH Biomarkers meeting taking place in May Having identified these two main gaps in the NASH/NAFLD field, we aim to address these unmet needs in two separate but complimentary workshops: While our NASH Biomarkers Workshop reviews the regulatory landscape and gaps in evidence needed to qualify specific biomarkers for NASH/ NAFLD, the European NASH meeting focuses on training clinicians on current and future treatment options. TARGET AUDIENCE This meeting targets clinicians active in the field of NASH/NAFLD management, especially hepatologists, endocrinologists, diabetologists, cardiologists and general practitioners and representatives of regulatory agencies ESTIMATED NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS LEARNING OBJECTIVES After attending the meeting, the participant will be able to: Review potential future treatment options Critically assess current treatment options Outline the mode of action of new treatment options Implement strategies and guidelines used for diagnosing and treating NASH MEETING OBJECTIVES This meeting aims to: Review current treatment options and prepare the field for upcoming drugs Review the mechanistic backgrounds of new drugs and their mode of action Raise awareness for NASH among secondary stakeholders such as endocrinologists, diabetologists and cardiologists Stimulate discussion to accelerate the implementation of policies 1. 3 MEETING DESCRIPTION PROGRAM By bringing together key experts involved in the clinical management of NAFLD/NASH, this meeting serves as a platform to translate science into clinical practice. Besides focusing on the primary stakeholders, namely hepatologists, we specifically aim to include secondary stakeholders, such as diabetologists, cardiologists, policy enablers and patient representatives. This allows us to stimulate cross-disciplinary discussions that ultimately move the field forward and facilitate the implementation of new policies and guidelines urgently needed to diagnose and treat NASH efficiently. Importantly, we cover the most pressing unmet needs in disease management among medical providers: we prepare the field for upcoming drugs which in turn helps clinicians to effectively use the drug once it enters the market. At the same time, we raise awareness about NASH among secondary stakeholders. Our program spans 1.5 days and includes invited lectures, poster presentations and interactive discussions with the leading experts in the field. FORMAT This interactive workshop will include plenary expert presentations, panel discussions and abstract-driven presentations. International experts in the field of NASH will give state-of-the art lectures and lead the discussions on unresolved issues. Considering that the meeting will be abstract-driven, young professionals will be given the chance to present their data to a wider audience and to connect to senior professionals. Abstracts will be selected purely on their quality of data. Participants will be given the opportunity to network during various poster sessions and a workshop dinner. 3
