7 News from The Nurse An allergy is your immune system s response in overdrive, attempting to destroy and remove the allergen from your body. Inhaling an irritant can trigger a physiological response warning to keep you from inhaling the offender. Once inhaled, ingested, or in contact with the mucus membranes, the allergen or irritant sets off a series of inflammatory reactions, like touching the first domino in an intricate chain. The longer this reaction is allowed to progress, the more injury to the airways (which start at the nose and end deep in the lunch) and the more time it takes to recover. Medications like nasal and inhaled corticosteroids will turn off the inflammation (swelling), but as long as the offending allergen or irritant is in the area, you ll likely need to continue using the medication. Oral and topical nasal antihistamines block runaway histamines but, histamine release and inflammation result from exposure to offending allergens and irritants. WHAT CAN YOU DO?? 1. Know which allergens and irritants affect you. That s where allergy testing comes in. Results should be interpreted by a board-certified allergist who knows your history and can help you identify and prioritize reasonable avoidance strategies. 2. Once you know the offending environmental allergens and irritants take your family on a scavenger hunt through your house or apartment looking for the sometimes-hidden offenders. (check free download at or call ) 3. Prioritize your actions. As you discover problem areas, focus on what you can do and do well. Tackle the rest as soon as possible. Every step you take moves you closer to your goal. The little things you do add up and can mean less stress on the immune system for the whole family. It may take some time as it takes about three months to heal and regenerate new tissue once offenders have been removed. But just think how great it will be when allergens and irritants no longer rule your life!! Information obtained from: Allergy & Asthma Today / Volume 9, Issue 2
8 Calling All Volunteers!! Now is the time to sign up and help out at this year s FORE THE CHILDREN Golf Tournament.
