1 Training: The Mindfulness-Based Therapeutic Lifestyle Change Program October 14-17, 2014 We suggest arrival between 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, October 14. Plan for departure on Friday, October 17 after 4 pm. Vision: It is our belief that the Mindfulness-based Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (MBTLC) model is an encompassing approach to physician training and patient care. Its innovation lies in the targeting of both the science and behavior change aspects of key modifiable lifestyle factors that underlie chronic disease, thereby providing guidance for physician practice and patient care designed to optimize health restoration. This training is designed for Family Medicine Residency Programs, Regional Medical Centers, Community Health educators, Health and Wellness Centers and will provide functional medicine training in chronic disease management, prevention and its underlying root cause. It is based on the 12-week behavioral change program for patients with chronic disorders, the Mindfulness-based Therapeutic Lifestyle Change Program (MBTLC), offered at the Family Medicine Residency Program at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, Tallahassee, Florida. The training will provide functional medicine training for physicians in office and group visits, functional nutrition, and complete course content for the 12-week patient program that addresses the personalized modifiable lifestyle factors (MLFs) that underlie chronic disorders. Training philosophy: The basis for the focus on the modifiable lifestyle factors is the emerging recognition of the need to use a systems biology approach to chronic disease management and prevention in order to develop the resiliency essential to today s environment. There is a dynamic interplay between the cells that make up our body and the environment in which we live. We now know that external factors communicate with our cells and influence our molecular, biochemical, and physiological responses that collectively add up to our functional ability, providing a continuum of resiliency that ranges from wellness to illness. These lifestyle factors are modifiable by the daily choices we make throughout our life. Our extent of resiliency today is the result of many years of lifestyle choices that frequently do not serve us well. By identifying unhealthy choices and substituting health-promoting ones, we can change our health at the cellular level and both prevent disease and more effectively manage existing disease. The MBTLC program is designed to help individuals with existing disease better manage their conditions but also improve their health and, in
2 many cases, the health of their family members. We have found the key to patients embracing this program wholeheartedly, with the intent to make long-term changes, is to help them integrate changes to these modifiable lifestyle factors within a mindfulness context. In this MBTLC training, there will be break-out sessions for physicians and nutrition professionals to gain tools in functional management of the underlying causes of chronic conditions. These sessions will highlight personalized physician training with IFM leading faculty Drs. Michael Stone and Ruth DeBusk: ABCDs of nutrition-oriented patient assessment o Anthropometrics including Bio-Impedance Analysis o Biochemistries- reading the usual labs through a nutrition lens o Clinical indicators which includes the nutrition oriented physical exam o Diet and Lifestyle Assessment For the behavioral practitioner, we will examine each of the five modifiable lifestyle factor domains: 1) nutrition (what we eat), 2) physical activity (how physically active we are and whether we enjoy quality sleep), 3) thoughts and emotions (how effectively we work with our perceptions), 4) our relationships and system of meaning, and 5) sleep (rest )and relaxation. The participants will receive a comprehensive 12-week program that includes: 450-page facilitator manual detailing each weekly lesson plan, patient handouts and daily home practice guide. Functional nutrition plans for individualized care Program materials for patients including mindfulness meditation, yoga CDs, teaching DVDs, administrative guide and sample IRB application (for those in hospital/researchbased settings). Whole foods/plant-based MBTLC cookbook The MBTLC facilitator training will be an integrated didactic and experiential learning experience, reflecting the nature of the program content itself. Each participant is expected to address each of the lifestyle domains in the training in their own personal health and wellness process. Functional/lifestyle medicine, 1 mindfulness, nutrition, aerobic and resistance exercise, gentle yoga, and positive psychology are key components of the program. Training cost: $395/food and lodging at Lodestar Retreat Center, Cairo, GA (32 miles from Tallahassee) Training philosophy: The training is conducted at locations that provide a natural setting with a relaxed atmosphere. For this retreat training we have chosen Lodestar by the Trail for its bucolic setting with farm animals cattle, sheep, horses and chickens which many of us from urban centers do not often see. This 1 Functional, sometimes called lifestyle, medicine is a personalized approach to health that focuses on identifying the root cause of the patient s dysfunction and restoring health by addressing the molecular, biochemical, and physiological mechanisms that underlie their symptoms. See Institute for Functional Medicine
3 type of setting reminds us of the natural rhythms of our messaging system. There is quiet time scheduled to allow for personal reflection with dedicated blocks for mindfulness practices such as noble silence, which is being silent in a group for a specified period of time, walking meditations and breath awareness, gentle yoga, and journaling. We encourage each participant to learn more about their own messaging system and develop a home practice of life-affirming behaviors to support their own health and happiness. We believe that by practicing MBTLC you can better assist others to do the same. Check out the retreat training facility: Reserve your space early as we expect this training to fill quickly. Maximum capacity at the center is 17. All rooms are shared with a shared bath. Cancellation policy: If you need to cancel your reservation, a place will held for you at the next retreat training you are able to attend. No refunds are possible. All food served is fresh, locally grown and often organic. There are vegetarian options if requested. Medical food plans cannot be accommodated. Please complete the electronic registration. Make checks payable to: Lodestar on the Trail. If you have questions call Mary Catherine Register at Dress is casual. Wear loose fitting comfortable clothing for the yoga practice. Bring shoes for outdoor walking. Dress for outdoor activities training events, walking, and campfire. *Although every effort is made to oblige identified dietary restrictions of individual participants, medical diets cannot be accommodated. There are refrigeration and freezer storage space for food you wish to bring.
