This can allow more openness and freedom of movement in mind and body. It is a self-nurturing exploration using gentle movements, often lying down to eliminate typical postural reactions to gravity, resulting in discovering new (and old) options of interacting with oneself and the world. It s fun, based on the students curiosity, and an exercise in mindfulness. We will explore connections up and down ourselves around movement of the pelvis, which is the primary connection with horseback riding. An internet search will provide general information on The Feldenkrais Method prior to the conference if you wish to peruse further. John Vladimiroff, OTR/L, graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Occupational Therapy in When he moved to the Wood River Valley in 1981, there was no practicing OT. He, by necessity, became a generalist supporting the community in pediatrics, geriatrics, home health, general medicine rehabilitation ranging from
3 neurology to hand therapy, and in the schools with developmental disabilities. He graduated from the four year Feldenkrais training program in This experience has informed his life personally and professionally since. 9:00 10:15 am B Equine Health and Travel, Whether you are caring for a large herd of therapy horses or your own backyard pony, practicing safe and consistent wellness habits and routines can limit your chances of picking up unwanted viruses or other illnesses when traveling to new barns and facilities. Learn how to recognize symptoms if they do occur, and how to put bio security protocols in effect to help keep a virus from spreading and protect the rest of your herd. Q & A to follow. 10:15 10:30 am Break Dr. Erin Crawford, DVM of Sawtooth Equine Service in Bellevue, Idaho, works hard to maintain a healthy equine herd at Swiftsure Ranch. She strives to treat the whole horse, incorporating acupuncture and chiropractic along with cutting edge, modern therapies. In her free time she enjoys the great outdoors with her friends and her husband Ben, their 2 horses, mule and 2 dogs. She is licensed in Idaho and Wyoming. 10:30 11:45 am A Youth Mental Health First Aid is an education program that teaches how to recognize signs and symptoms of a mental health disorder versus typical adolescent development. The 8 hour training gives hands on practical tools to offer help to those in need and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. Becky will be presenting a brief description of possible mental health disorders that are common among our youth. Current statistics, signs and symptoms, risk factors, and protective factors will be discussed. The presentation will also present warning signs of suicide and how to get help for someone in need. Becky Tinsley is a Licensed Master Social Worker. She is currently working on getting her Clinical Licensure as well. She has worked for the past 11 years as School Social Worker for the Blaine County School District. She currently is a certified trainer for Youth Mental Health First Aid and works at Swiftsure Ranch during the summer running the GALLOP Program. Becky s previous work experience was in the juvenile justice system and child protective services. Becky has her Master of Social Work degree from the Walla Walla College. When Becky is not working she is working on a ranch in the Wood River Valley. She is an avid competitor of team roping and she and her husband, Wes, train rope horses and compete in team roping events. Becky grew up on a cattle ranch in the Pahsimeroi Valley. 10:30 11:45 am B Better Horses through Better Yields! The key to people, both horseman, and others being safe and having good results around horses is excellent yields. Horses communicate with each other through pressure and release, so we must learn this language, so we can better relate to the horses we work with. During this workshop I will demonstrate with a few different horses, how to improve our boundary setting, expectations, and softness with horses. We will create excellent yields, which will produce happier horses!
4 Noon 1:30 pm Lillan Roquet has always had a passion for horses. She grew up riding at a local stable in the San Juan Islands that provided a vast and eclectic experience. She learned Natural Horsemanship, hoof trimming, vaulting, jumping, pony club, trail riding, and much more! From there she pursued a passion in psychology to a B.S in Psychology from Linfield College. She went on to study directly with Pat and Linda Parelli, Walter Zettle, Trevor Carter, and many other top equine professionals. She also has had the opportunity to work directly with many different Equine Therapy Centers to help craft programs with happier horses, and therefore happier clients and staff. Lunch and Idaho State Meeting 1:30 2:45 pm A Equine-Facilitated Learning (EFL) is an unmounted or mounted experiential learning approach with a primary focus on the development of life skills rather than on horsemanship. Horses are extremely sensitive to their environment and will instinctively react to human body language and other nonverbal cues. In an EFL session, the instructor allows the horse(s) to provide valuable feedback and insight to participants. In this session, an EFL activity will be presented that will include participants and demonstrate how EFL can be used to promote self-awareness, leadership skills, and team building. Mimi Crocker, a hunter/jumper equestrian from Connecticut, was introduced to the world of equine therapy when she volunteered at Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center in 1989 as a University of Washington student. That experience left a lasting impression and led Mimi to pursue certification as an Equine Specialist through EAGALA in 1999, a PATH Int'l Therapeutic Riding Instructor in 2011, and as an Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning in Mimi has been volunteering her time as a therapeutic riding instructor at Swiftsure Ranch since 2011 and has co-facilitated several veterans programs using equine facilitated learning activities. She currently works as Director of Finance & Administration at the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation and teaches private riding and horsemanship lessons, clinics, and summer camps to children in the Wood River Valley from her newly operational facility The BARN in Bellevue, ID 1:30 2:45 pm B Equine Stretching and Energy Work for Improved Soundness This session will demonstrate simple techniques of stretching and energy work that should be done after each session a horse works in order to maintain healthy, sound horses. Teri Szombathy is an avid horsewomen and a Integrative Equine Body Therapist. She has been associated with Swiftsure Ranch for about 20 years. She started out as a volunteer and then was asked to be a board member soon after that. Currently she is not only still a board member but also a volunteer and the horses personal body therapist. 5 years ago she started with training to become an equine massage therapist. She trained with April Battles and learned her techniques which translated into a more broad way of working on horses. She taught energy work, applied Kinesiology, releasing meridians and muscle release. She also integrates the Masterson Method. She then followed up with learning simple chiropractic adjustments from Dr. Bill Hampton. He started out as a human chiropractor and
5 2:45 3:00 pm Break evolved into an equine chiropractor and ended up after over 30 years teaching people like Teri how to do these simple adjustments. She has since implement this into her work. She works the whole horse always, as everything is connected on the body of a horse. 3:00 4:15 pm A Understanding Children with Autism, This presentation will focus on a basic understanding of processing styles of children with autism, and similar processing of children with sensory integrative dysfunction, basic methods of interaction, and strategies for increased success in learning activities. Ivan M Hardcastle OTR/L has been a pediatric occupational therapist in Twin Falls at Primary Therapy Source since Having grown up in the Magic Valley as the youngest of 4 brothers, the idea of working with children was initially terrifying. However, after being married and asked to help in the church nursery, that initial hesitation grew into a love of working with children of all ages and abilities. He is now a father of 5 children and not only works as a therapist, but he also coaches kindergarten and second grade soccer, directs youth theater, and volunteers in various other youth programs. Those children on the autism spectrum have always had a special spot in his heart. They are very enjoyable to work with and it is very motivating to find out what puzzle pieces can fit together to help the child develop and learn and interact. 3:00 4:15 pm B Improving Posture and Alignment, This session will begin with matching real horses and rider bodies to achieve the best alignment possible for the rider. Then, it will explore different exercises and techniques in order to further improve rider posture and alignment. Lindsey Jameson has been working in the EAAT industry since 2005 when she began working at the Swiftsure Ranch Therapeutic Equestrian Center in Hailey, Idaho. She has a bachelor s degree from Colby College in Nature and Nurture in the Human Condition and a graduate certificate from Denver University in Animals and Human Health. She is a PATH Intl. Advanced Instructor, Registered Instructor Evaluator, Site Visitor, ESMHL, and Mentor. She currently works part time at Swiftsure Ranch, teaches private riding lessons, yoga, and skiing. 4:30 5:30 pm Social Hour with drinks and light appetizers 5:30 pm Dinner on your own, or join the group out in town for dinner! Thank you for coming and safe travels home!
