GUEST SPEAKER PROFILES Donna Louise Bishop Donna - Louise is a senior reporter with Archant the Eastern Daily Press and the Dereham Times. She studied at the University of South Wales, has a Master of Philosophy in Writing and is working on her first novel. Grace Brown Grace is a current MFA Creative Writing student at the University of East Anglia. A former researcher at the House of Lords, Grace s journalism has featured in The Scotsman, New Statesman and The Times among others. Her short fiction has featured in Dear Damsel and the Weekend Read and her story Hens was shortlisted for the Royal Society of literature s V.S.Pritchett Prize, She is a recipient of the Seth Donaldson Memorial Bursary. Grace is currently completing a short story collection based on the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Zoe Cook Zoe is a second year MFA Creative Writing student at The University of East Anglia. She moved to Norwich after completing her BA and MA in Sheffield. Zoe is particularly interested in unlikeable characters, what makes them human and how to write them. She is currently working on her first novel. Naomi Ishaguru Naomi is currently in the second year of the Prose Fiction MFA at the University of East Anglia. She was born in London, she has a First Class (Hons) BA in English from University College London and in between her Undergraduate degree and Masters she spent two years working as a bookseller and bibliotherapist at Mr B s Emporium of Reading Delights in Bath. She is currently working on a collection of stories, all of which are slightly magical and which play on themes of traps, flight and freedom.
Janet Cunningham Janet is the Library Manager of Swaffham Library and she works with a dedicated and experienced team of staff who above all love meeting and working with lots of different people and especially helping them find answers to their queries. Janet has worked with the library service for over 16 years in several different libraries in Norfolk. For Janet, another great thing about working in the library is the fact that every day is different and there is always something new discovered each day. Swaffham Library is one of 47 public libraries run by the Norfolk Library and Information Service. Like all the libraries it stocks books in different formats including large print and audio and now it also has a large range of ebooks, e-audio books and digital magazines to borrow. However, libraries are so much more than just books! They have free computers, Wi-Fi, DVD hire, colour printing, author and performance events, craft activities, bounce & rhyme, & much more! There really is something for everyone in your local library!
Dr Sue Gattuso Sue has lived in Sporle for nearly 40 years and has an interest in local history. Career wise, in Norfolk, she has been a freelance reporter for the Swaffham area and taught German and ICT at Wymondham College for over 20 years. During her time there she was also Head of KS4 and in charge of reporting and learning. Sue also achieved a PhD from the UEA in Book ownership amongst the Elite and Educated in rural Early Modern Norfolk. Sue has been manager of Swaffham Museum for over four years and for most of that time its education officer. She is also a trustee of St Mary s Church, Houghton-on-the-Hill.
Paul Jackson Paul began his artistic career in 1976 working in Porcelain, making one off sculptures. He has continued a successful path of spreading that style of fantasy~imaginative work into other areas including children's books, commercial design and music. In 1993 Paul introduced Storytelling into the mix which then helped to overcome his dyslexia. His stories come from most cultures; are often soaked in wonder and full of emotion or are fantastical. They may be faerie tales, myths, creation stories or wonder tales. Since he began Telling he became fascinated by musical instruments and has an extensive range from around the world. His favourite stories at the moment are The Old Woman and the Polar Bear who became her son and The Girl with a chair on her back. Paul believes passionately in storytelling and its transformative, healing qualities. Since 1997 he has run workshops to teach others to find their voice and their way into telling. Since 2012 he has been working on a book trilogy. Set in a separate world called Elsewhere, The Book of Master 'I' and The Merchant of Storms is an adventure of the imagination. You can see more about his work at:
Peter Kavanagh Peter is a story-telling illustrator, using drawings instead of words to describe action, feeling and plot. He has illustrated over 150 books for authors such as Dick King- Smith and Tony Bradman and has also had ten of his own stories published, including There s a Monster Next Door, The Magic Forest and Arthur the Outlaw. Peter enjoys working with children and teaching them how to bring their own characters to life.
James McCullough James is an experienced public speaker and communicator, having trained and coached senior executives in presentation and management skills across the globe, for almost twenty years. He currently works in partnership with EWTN, a global Catholic media network, in their UK production studio in Walsingham, Norfolk. Their work involves producing and editing programmes with Catholic content for TV and radio broadcast on the EWTN s Sky network and has given James recent experience of interviewing and presenting on TV and radio programmes. The workshop he is facilitating for the pupils will encourage them to use script-writing skills to create a short video production.
Mandy Stanley Mandy Stanley is an award-winning illustrator, author and designer who has published more than 200 picture books for children. One of her most popular picture book characters is Lettice Rabbit - an independent little wild rabbit that loves to experience all sorts of new things such as dancing, ice skating, meeting fairies and even flying an aeroplane! Before discovering her passion for writing and illustrating children s books, Mandy worked in the fashion industry, designing clothes, toys and nursery products. She uses her 3D design skills learnt from her fashion training in the design of her books. As well as making picture books, Mandy offers and runs workshops and talks for schools aimed at both primary and secondary classes. She says: Since I can remember, I have always loved writing, drawing, painting, snipping, stitching and sticking. When I was very young, I spent many hours with my grandma learning how to knit, sew, crochet and cook. I clearly remember her showing me her favourite colourways using embroidery silks to demonstrate. What s amazing, is that even to this day, I still use those colour palettes. There is more about Mandy s work and current projects on her website:
Sarah Whittley Sarah s background is publishing and art; she has worked with artists for many years. In1992 she set up the Wildlife Art Agency, a company specialising in wildlife illustration and book packaging. Sarah has recently formed a publishing company, called Red Hare Publishing, to publish books about Norfolk.
