1 School Nurse Physician Collaborative October 16, 2013 I. Call to order & Welcome Welcome by Charlene Dean-Special Thank you to Debbie Long for finding and acquiring our new meeting place. The SNPC committee members were introduced. II. III. Approval of Minutes The minutes of May 1, 2013 were approved Recognition of Lunch Sponsor Sanofi Pasteur-Kristina Azab, Public Health Manager-Discussion of Flu vaccine later in the meeting CEUs available-if you attend both meetings today: Rebecca Pierce will be assisting (the CEUs will be mailed to you or you will receive the certificate next time you come to the meeting). IV. Meeting Topic: Sexual Trafficking-Video courtesy of San Bernardino District Attorney-SB City Coalition Against Sexual Exploitation of Minors (CASE). (Trafficking of human beings for profit) The task force for Riverside and SB Counties-with technology and the internet (+/-) advertisements on the different web sites (i.e. Backpage.com-Human Trafficker). This is happening in communities in which we work-very eye opening (we can assistprovide resources for our students). Red Flags: Students tired during the day; bruising; may not acknowledge; absenteeism; change in dress. Resources from Renee, Dept. of Public Health # Teen Aid Cards-Many resources for students (counseling, suicide hotline); Dial helpful in many ways also. V. Hot Topics in School Nursing Allergy Action Plan Form: Dr. Saca from Kaiser-changing FARE-they are looking at the form (many graphics)-the 13 chiefs of Kaiser Medical Center will give us recommendations in December. Suggestion to remove the food from the form (pictures are great). Noting the symptoms are the same with both food and bee stings. Goal is to keep students and staff safe. School Nurse Comparison Chart : Review of the school nurse comparison chart, San Bernardino-Listed by School District; number (#) of schools; number (#) of credentialed school nurses (lead or coordinator); number (#) of students; number of health tech/clerk/aides/assistant, etc. Are there LVNs assisting with specialized health care procedures? Good Information.
2 Influenza: Preventing influenza in children and adolescents-kristina Azab, Public Health Manager, Sanofi Pasteur. It is the largest in the United States and around the world and makes the majority of flu vaccine distributed in the world. Job is to increase vaccine rates. Comparison: People taking action to change lives in public health/nursing we that to change lives. With immunizations-don t know exactly know who you have affected. Powerpoint: Quadrivalent- Fluzone for everyone-manufacturers didn t switch over their supply but is matching the strains that are circulating. The vaccine produced matches the strain. There is a lot more coverage in tackling the problem. The B strain is unpredictable-protection against the B strain is critical; cause epidemics every 2-4 years and the impact of circulating B strain affects children. Sanofi Pasteur is the only manufacturer that makes the pediatric vaccine, preventing influenza in children and adolescents. This is the transition year for quadrivalent. Many pediatricians may not even have it. Annual attack rates10-40%; complications are minor to severe-so many side effects. This is preventable and every year there is a good amount of pediatric deaths due to influenza. The goal is to get children immunized. Children up to 2-doses if not fully immunized in season passed. California numbers are low-challenge to get them back in for second dose! Tell patients Giving you half of dose now-need to come back in 4 weeks for second half. Vaccinate through the spring-keep pushing and vaccinating-ca usually hit later. for everyone-links to the CDC-many categories including information for schools. As school nurses, perfect opportunity to communicate with your parents. Newsletters-going home to families break the myth of why people are not getting the flu vaccine. Kristina.azab@sanofipasteur.com Update-SKlice-July 1 st added to straight medical formulary. SKlice (co-pay) cards - message to parent: what will it cost you if you miss school; over the counter medications (discussion is reality) There are free Flu clinics out there-flyers provided by Be Prepared County of San Bernardino! (Preparedness & Response Program) Free Flu Shot or FluMist at several POD (point of dispensing) site. San Bernardino Public Health Immunization Exemptions: Personal Belief Exemption: Beverly & Mayra (January-Preschool and transfer from out of state required to get
3 exemption signed) come summer time-july-the exemption will focus on Pre-K, Kindergarten, 7 th grade and transfers. Looking at doing renewals for these key grades. Goal is to educate parents; a lot is up in the air at this time. We are calling monthly for information. If you have any questions please or call Beverly at Bvilla.dph@sbcounty.gov or Mparga.dph@sbcounty.gov. As a reminder, immunization reports were due yesterday. If you have follow-up you can call Beverly directly-you can t submit directly. If a student is on a special schedule (request letter from their MD/provider-with dates for next visit) and for these students you can put temporary exemption. Shots for school-deleted public and private schools (still have to submit) Revision of CSIR-working on it; have not heard anything as of yet-continue with what you are using now. Tuberculin solution still limited; information on what you can do in lieu of a skin test-call Beverly for this information. School law regarding personal belief exemption: letter in lieu of form is acceptable. Q: Is information going to be provided for those individuals who will be able to sign this off? A: The information will be submitted to Charlene who will get it to Beverly to send out to everyone. County of San Bernardino Department of Public Health Updates: Sara Herandez-Singh, RN, BSN, MPH-Education of SB public health: October is SIDS awareness month (many cases-related to co-sleeping) JAMA study contacted over 18,000 parents from (co-sleeping) was the main reason and those interviewed said their provider talked with them about co-sleeping. Message: room sharing without bed sharing! Students go in and see mom and discuss co-sleeping. Coroner s report has to investigate the scene. Two out of twenty-five cases where alcohol was involved-the majority wanting to be good parents, doing the right thing. CEUs available free: SIDS Risk- Reduction Curriculum for Nurses National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week October 20-October 26, 2013-Postersoutreach for lead (please post)-have expanded services to children who are 5-10 years old. Environmental inspector will go out to the home of these families. West Nile Virus: SB Dept. of Public Health letter released 8/20/13-Warning about that stagnant water-copy given to group. Thank you to public health-stamp we need to make our jobs easier
4 American Lung Association in CA: Fidelia Leyba, Program Manager, Open Airways for Schools; Charlene provided good feedback and appreciation from parents. Fidelia shared the upcoming camp and asthma program as well as the walk. She summarized the results of the past SCAMP camp. Wanted to engage new campers last year but still did not reach new diagnosed or others. From the Inland Empire-there were 49 students 27 boys and 22 girls ages There were 35 who were 8-11 years old and 11 who were12-13 years old with 32 being new and 13 returning.
