South about 3/4 mi. to light at S. Maple. Turn left to second drive on the right. Drive back to large building. For More Information: arboroads@aol.com or BOARD/MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES Board Meeting Board members in attendance were: Gary Cooper, Patty Wayne, Pam Nichols, Mike Merians, Barb Paveglio, Judy Matice, Angela Ewald and Jeanine Asch. Guest: Cindy Skiba. The meeting was called to order at 6:45 p.m. by president Jeanine Asch. The minutes from the August board meeting were read and motioned to be approved as read by Mike Merians. Patty Wayne seconded. Passed. The treasurer s report was motioned to be approved as read by Patty Wayne. Gary seconded. Passed. Judy stated she had received a quote for bonding of officers through Sportsmans (our current liability insurance carrier) at $281/3 years. One of the stipulations they require is a yearly audit which probably should be done regardless. There are several details Judy will question the company about before a final decision is made. The board has decided to hold their meetings at the Livingston Conservation Association building prior to the general membership meetings. There will be a winter shooting league forming for December-March that would potentially not permit us to hold our meetings in the main building. However, there is another building on the premises that is heated that we could hold our meetings in should one of our meeting dates fall on the night of a shoot. The board discussed having embroidered chairs as gifts for our specialty judges. Cost information will be presented to the membership at the general membership meeting for consideration. MKC is going to be offering golf cart rental at a cost of $30/day. Gary motioned the club pay $30 to rent a golf cart for club use the Friday of our specialty. Mike seconded. Passed Meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jeanine Asch substituting for Stacy Quake General Membership Meeting Members in attendance were: Gary Cooper, Patty Wayne, Pam Nichols, Mike Merians, Barb Paveglio, Judy Matice, Angela Ewald and Jeanine Asch, Cindy Skiba, Judy Merians, Sheila Norgren, Dolores Richards, Stella Blair, Frieda Paison. Guests: The meeting was called to order at 7:43 p.m. by president Jeanine Asch. The minutes from the August general membership meeting were read and motioned to be approved with the corrections that catalog ads were due in to Annie by 9/2/05, the Arbuckle print is the Jillie print, and that the meeting will be held at the LCA by Mike Merians. Judy Matice seconded. Passed. Angela stated she faxed letters on 8/31 on behalf of HRLRC to Senators Stabenow and Levin to state our club s opposition of the PAWS bill. She will print up copies of these letters as well as a petition that will be made available at our specialty. Anyone who opposes the bill and wishes to sign is welcome to do so. Rich Hunt, the president of the Livingston Conservation Association, introduced himself and stated he was pleased to allow us to hold our meetings at their site. Ken Vagt of MKC has requested each club hosting a specialty at the fairgrounds should provide one club member to oversee grounds cleanup on behalf of the club. Gary was to check to see who would be interested in doing this. Cindy mentioned she has raffle donations but would gladly accept more. There will not be a raffle item assembly party. The club will not be providing for a hotel room for the raffle chairperson. 4

5 Page 5 of 7 The subject of judging gifts was brought to the membership. The costs of embroidered chairs and shipping of them was determined to be more excessive than was intended. Sheila made a motion to rescind the motion to purchase embroidered chairs for the judges. Judy seconded. Motion passed. It was suggested the judges receive embroidered tote bags stuffed with goodies such as munchies and beverages for their hotel stay. Mike motioned the club purchase embroidered tote bags that Barb Paveglio would fill with goodies. Patty seconded. Motion passed. For the future, it was decided there should be a $50 cap on judge s gifts. A judge selection committee will be formed after this year s specialty to work on the 2007 slate. As our rescue fund has not been receiving much income, some ideas were suggested to help replenish this fund. Some suggestions were to allocate a percentage of each member s dues or for each club member to contribute a couple of dollars for each pup they sell. The idea of a 50/50 raffle at meetings was brought up. Rich of LCA stated since we are not for profit, we can have a 50/50 as long as the winnings are not over $600. Discussion occurred pertaining to relief efforts surrounding Hurricane Katrina. Angela made a motion the club donate $500 to the Louisiana State University veterinary school. Sheila seconded. Motion passed. Helen Bronson prefers not to be the Sunshine Chair any longer. It needs to be determined if Nancy Chargo is assuming this position or if it is available for someone else to do. Kim Bryson has talked to OVRS about holding a heart clinic. The cost would be $90/dog (color dopplar?). This most likely would be the first or second weekend in October. Patty has talked with a lady in Flint who would be interested in coming to one of our meetings to talk about therapy dogs. This would be a great winter meeting program. Meeting was adjourned at 9:35 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jeanine Asch substituting for Stacy Quake Industry News From the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine website < Animal Health Diagnostic Center - Announcements The Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell has reason to believe that canine influenza virus is now present in the New York City area. Reports have been received indicating that an unusual form of kennel cough has been seen in a number of veterinary practices. Animals recovering from this clinical presentation that have been tested are all serologically positive for canine influenza virus. Tests of selected New York State dogs last year were all negative. Canine influenza virus is a relatively new pathogen of dogs. It was first identified in racing greyhounds in 2004 and this virus appears to have been involved with significant respiratory problems on the dog tracks throughout the US for the last 2-3 years. The Virology Lab at Cornell isolated the first influenza virus from an animal that died during one of these clinical episodes. Evidence of infection of non-greyhounds by influenza virus has been found in Florida within the past year as part of the ongoing research efforts by Dr Cynda Crawford at the University of Florida on respiratory disease in dogs. As this virus is a new pathogen of dogs, all dogs are potentially susceptible to infection. As with any disease, there is variability in the clinical signs and the eventual outcome of the infection. The most common sign is a cough that can persist for up to three weeks regardless of treatment. Dogs may have a Purulent nasal discharge that seems to resolve with antibiotic treatment. This suggests that secondary bacterial infections are a common component of the clinical presentation. More severely affected dogs exhibit a high fever ( ) with increased respiratory rates and other clinical signs of pneumonia. Again antibiotic therapy seems essential for recovery. Some fatal cases of pneumonia have been reported but the rate is probably below 5%. 5

6 Page 6 of 7 While it may be difficult to differentiate canine influenza virus infections from traditional kennel cough agents for an individual dog, the situation in groups of dogs is more distinct. As mentioned earlier, virtually all dogs are susceptible regardless of age or vaccination history. Infection rates in kennels may reach 100% with clinical signs in 75% of dogs. The incubation period is relatively short, in the 2-5 day range. The diagnosis of a canine influenza infection at this time is most reliably done by detecting antibodies to the virus. Since this is a new infection in dogs, there are no background titers due to vaccines or previous exposures. Acute and convalescent serum samples should be collected and submitted to the AHDC. A single serum sample on dogs that have recovered from a respiratory infection can also be submitted, but in this case the test results will only determine previous exposure to canine influenza. Commercial antigen-capture ELISA tests have not been useful in detecting the virus. Virus detection either by virus isolation or PCR using pharyngeal swabs has also been unsuccessful. The reason for this is unclear, but could be due to the time of collection, which in most instances is several days after clinical signs have appeared. Collection of an oropharyngeal swab or tracheal wash samples on febrile dogs very early in the course of the disease may increase chances of identifying the virus. Tissues from dogs that have died acutely with respiratory signs should be submitted for virus isolation (ship overnight on ice packs). One should not lose sight of the fact that all respiratory infections in dogs are not due to canine influenza virus. Adhering to the ìband wagonî approach could result in the failure to appropriately treat dogs with infections previously known to cause respiratory problems in dogs. A comprehensive diagnostic and treatment protocol should be applied in all cases. subject: Samples for Detecting the Presence of Canine Influenza Virus 9/21/2005 As with most viral diseases, there are several ways to determine the role of a virus in a clinical event. While there is a tendency to want a single sample type that will work in all cases, the reality is that this is not possible. The list of possible tests is: 1. At present the most reliable way to diagnose canine influenza virus infections is by serological tests. The direct link between canine influenza virus and a clinical event is through the collection of acute and convalescent serum samples. First sample is collected at the first presentation of the patient and then 2-3 weeks later. Serum can be separated from the clot and held in the refrigerator until collection of the second sample. Samples can be shipped overnight without ice packs or 2 day delivery with ice packs. For animals that have recovered from a case of ìkennel coughî, a single serum sample can determine whether the animal has been infected with canine influenza virus at some point in the past. As this is a relatively new pathogen of dogs, we do not expect to find a high seroprevalence in unaffected dogs. Canine influenza virus HI test $20/sample after October Isolation of canine influenza virus is a relatively unreliable way to confirm the infection. The reason for this is not clear, but time of sampling is probably the main culprit. Pharyngeal swabs collected several days after the onset of clinical signs are not useful for canine influenza either for virus isolation or antigen-capture ELISA tests. All virus isolates to date have been obtained from lung tissue from dogs that have died acutely. We are especially interested in getting lung tissue from these dogs in order to attempt an isolation. Until further notice we will do testing on tissue samples for canine influenza virus at no cost if a complete history of the case is provided. We will not routinely test these samples for other viruses unless specifically requested and this will incur the $50 virus isolation fee. We are also interested in pharyngeal swabs taken from dogs with high fevers and minimal clinical signs. In this case, we are trying for samples very early in the infection. These samples will be screened by PCR testing and if positive will be used for virus isolation. Again, these will be done at no cost if They meet the criteria stated above along with the complete history. Testing will be done at the discretion of 6

7 Page 7 of 7 the lab director as to whether the case fits the accepted profile. Isolation attempts for other viruses will not be done unless specifically requested ($50 fee).
