1 Heritage at Oakwood Hills Assisted Living Community Heritage Newsletter October Damon St., Eau Claire, WI heritagesenior.com Letter from the Director Dear residents and families, Heritage is dedicated to providing quality services, and our staff, together with our quality department, work continuously to improve our practices and knowledge in order to provide excellent care and amenities. Amanda Runnoe Executive Director Our annual Resident Satisfaction Survey, which you will be receiving this month, helps us in our mission, providing qualitative responses that help us form action plans to help us improve. This survey measures your opinions on a variety of topics, including housekeeping, amenities, security, care, and more, and allows you to rank them from 1(very dissatisfied) to 5 (very satisfied). Please take a few minutes to fill out this survey and return it to us by mid- November. In the coming months, we ll review the surveys, then share the results with you along with our action plans for future improvements based on the data we ve collected. Thank you for taking the time to help us improve. Your feedback is appreciated! Sincerely, Amanda Runnoe The Heritage Senior Living Mission: To provide the highest standard while protecting, cherishing, and dignifying the knowledge, value, and joy of our respected residents.
2 w A Message from the Wellness Nurse Stay Healthy This Flu Season Flu season is officially upon us. Which means if you haven t gotten your flu shot yet, make sure to schedule it soon! You can also check with your community director to see when flu shots will be offered in your community. On top of getting your flu shot, here are other steps you can take to ensure you and your loved ones stay healthy: Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs often spread when a person touches a contaminated item, then touches their own face. Get plenty of sleep. This will help your boost your immune system, as will being physically active, drinking plenty of fluids and managing your stress. Wash your hands often. If soap and water aren t available, use an alcohol hand sanitizer. Avoid close contact with those who are ill. And remember: If you are experiencing flu symptoms (particularly difficulty Jaime Schwingel VP of Clinical and Medical Operations breathing, pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen, sudden dizziness or persistent vomiting) seek medical attention right away! A Message from Culinary Snacks to Satisfy your Fried Food Cravings Fall brings with it beautiful foliage and plentiful harvests. It also, unfortunately, brings the end of the grilling season. But don t despair! There are plenty of other fun ways to prepare your favorite foods ways that can even make your vegetables interesting! This fall, consider bringing a little crunchy goodness to your vegetables by frying them. Broccoli cauliflower and domestic or wild mushrooms are particularly good when lightly battered and fried in a healthy oil. Serve them with a fun dipping sauce like ranch, hot sauce, barbecue sauce or even low-sodium soy sauce to crank up the flavor profile. Lightly fried vegetables can Pam Berg Culinary Director make a great side dish or meal or a festive tailgating snack. And the best part is, they are simple and easy to make (and quite tasty)! Our Quality Promise to You Our quality promise starts with commitment. Heritage Senior Living is committed to listening to YOU. Got an idea? A suggestion? We want to hear it. Quality matters so we appreciate your ideas and input. Whether you are an employee, a resident, a family member or a visitor, let us know. us at: quality@heritageal.com
3 Please welcome Christina, our new LPN, who started with us in September. Christina is originally from Lake of the Ozarks and moved to Wisconsin 15 years ago. She is currently attending CVTC and will be graduating in December from the nursing program. She hopes to get her BSN after she graduates. Staff Updates Welcome Christina, our new LPN In her free time, Christina enjoys camping, fishing, cooking and spending time with her family and dog, Amos. Christina has two daughters, two step-daughters, and one son. She also has three granddaughters and two more on the way! Make sure to say hi and introduce yourself to Christina next time you see her! Christina LPN Oktoberfest Recipe: Wisconsin Beer-Glazed Brats & Sauerkraut INGREDIENTS 1/8 tsp celery seeds 1/8 tsp caraway seeds 1 tsp. Onion powder 1lb fresh bratwurst sausages 1 bottle of Leinenkugel s Oktoberfest Beer 1 tbs brown sugar 2 tsp dry mustard powder 1/8tsp pepper 1lb of sauerkraut drained DIRECTIONS Crush celery seeds and caraway seeds; set aside. Put brats into a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Mix beer, brown sugar, dry mustard, onion powder, black pepper, and caraway seeds in a bowl, stirring to dissolve brown sugar; pour over the brats. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to low; cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Uncover and raise heat to medium; boil the sauce until it reduces to a thick, syrupy liquid, about 20 minutes. Tilt skillet to roll brats in the sticky sauce until thoroughly coated. Transfer sausage to a platter and keep warm. Cook and stir sauerkraut in the same skillet to mix in any leftover sauce, 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer sauerkraut to a serving platter and top with cooked bratwurst. Enjoy! 4 Last Month in Pictures w Celebrating Wisconsin Companies In September we celebrated Wisconsin-based companies. Along with talking about Harley- Davidson and other Wisconsin companies, we visited Culver s for our lunch outing, where we got the VIP treatment. We also had our monthly visit with Bob s House for Dogs, which is based here in Eau Claire. Above: Our group poses with Robert, our wonderful helper on tour Culver s visit. Right: Don spends some time with Pete, a longtime resident at Bob s House. Far right: June and Poppy enjoy each other s company.
