1 Heritage Monona Heritage Newsletter 111 Owen Road, Monona, WI heritagesenior.com June 2018 Dear residents and families, Letter from the Director June 21 marks the first day of summer, and hopefully we ll be seeing some great summer weather over the next couple months! Summer is a great time to get out and enjoy the outdoors, but we want to make sure that all of our residents and their families stay safe and healthy! Remember to drink plenty of fluids preferably around 6-8 glasses of water a day. The feeling of thirst can decrease as we age, so make water intake a regular part of your day. Adrianne Stupar Executive Director If you re heading outside, make sure to wear sunscreen. One that blocks both UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of 15 or more is best. Apply it minutes before sun exposure. You should also stay alert for signs of heat stroke. These include confusion and disorientation, dry skin, excessive tiredness, headache, nausea and a rapid pulse. With these tips, we wish all a happy and healthy summer! Sincerely, Adrianne Stupar Resident Recognition: Martin Kieler June 19 is a big day for Martin Kieler. Not only will he celebrate his 95th birthday, but he and his sweet wife, Marcie, will celebrate 72 years of marriage. Martin was born and raised in Kieler, WI, which was named after Martin s great uncle George, Kieler s first postmaster. Martin is so proud of his home town, the town where he and Marcie raised their eight children. If you ask Martin about the town, he gets the same smile you see in this picture. He and his brother were the strength of their baseball teams; they continued to play ball together Martin as the pitcher and his brother as the catcher after their youth. Martin farmed his dairy cattle until 1972 when he and his brother started Kieler Brothers Feed and Seed. Martin, your hard work has paid off. You can see the love all around you. Your children and wife adore you. We are glad you chose Heritage Monona as your home. Happy birthday! The Heritage Senior Living Mission: To provide the highest standard while protecting, cherishing, and dignifying the knowledge, value, and joy of our respected residents.
2 w A Message from the Wellness Nurse Alzheimer s and Brain Awareness Month June is Alzheimer s and Brain Awareness Month so it s the perfect time to talk about this common, yet difficult disease. Alzheimer s is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. In fact, Alzheimer s kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. Early diagnosis is key, both for obtaining treatment and planning for the future. Here are a few signs to watch for: You forget recently learned information and increasingly need to rely on memory aids like Post-It notes. You have trouble with tasks like paying monthly bills, following a familiar recipe or driving to a familiar location. You forget where you are or how you got there. You have trouble following or joining conversations or often repeat yourself. You experience mood or personality changes and become confused or anxious. Nicole Smith, LPN Wellness Director If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, don t ignore them. See a doctor for a full evaluation. A Message from Culinary Finding Protein in Unlikely Places Getting your daily value of protein doesn t have to include eating meat. In fact, plant-based proteins are becoming more and more common (take, for instance, plant-based burgers), and they re a great option for both vegetarians and those seeking a healthier or more sustainable diet. Here are some high-protein foods you may want to work into your diet instead of (or in addition to) meat: Soy products are a great source of protein. This includes tofu, tempeh (fermented soy beans) and edamame, which each contain over 8 grams of protein per ½ cup. Lentils contain plenty of protein, as well as fiber, iron and potassium. Chickpeas contain around 7.25 grams per ½ cup and are great roasted or as hummus (which is a great alternative to butter on sandwiches). Diane Lueck Culinary Director Peanuts and almonds are a great source, as are peanut and almond butters. But be careful to avoid butters with added sugars. Our Quality Promise to You Our quality promise starts with commitment. Heritage Senior Living is committed to listening to YOU. Got an idea? A suggestion? We want to hear it. Quality matters so we appreciate your ideas and input. Whether you are an employee, a resident, a family member or a visitor, let us know. us at: quality@heritageal.com

4 Last Month in Pictures w Wisconsin Art and Architecture We have had a fun month celebrating Wisconsin s art and architecture in April. We are so fortunate to live in Madison, where our city runs deep with culture. Left: In the month of May the Bucky on Parade exhibit began. Our residents went to see the one at Olbrich Gardens. (There are more than 85 on display throughout Madison.) Below: After seeing Bucky, the Assisted Living residents had a seat outside of Olbrich. Above: The Enhanced Care residents went to the Chazen Museum to see the art exhibit from children with disabilities from around the world. Right: Marcie and Martin enjoy their time together.
5 Last Month in Pictures Music in Monona Karen Wickham came in April for her Patsy Cline tribute. She walked throughout the audience sharing her hats and music. What a great time! Clockwise from top left: The Carrolls were brought to their feet to have a dance together. Before we knew it, the front of the pub was a dance floor. Residents show off their cowboy hats.
