1 Heritage at Oakwood Hills Assisted Living Community Heritage Newsletter June Damon St., Eau Claire, WI heritagesenior.com Letter from the Director Dear residents and families, June 21 marks the first day of summer, and hopefully we ll be seeing some great summer weather over the next couple months! Summer is a great time to get out and enjoy the outdoors, but we want to make sure that all of our residents and their families stay safe and healthy! Jill Thornton Remember to drink plenty of fluids preferably around Executive Director 6-8 glasses of water a day. The feeling of thirst can decrease as we age, so make water intake a regular part of your day. If you re heading outside, make sure to wear sunscreen. One that blocks both UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of 15 or more is best. Apply it minutes before sun exposure. You should also stay alert for signs of heat stroke. These include confusion and disorientation, dry skin, excessive tiredness, headache, nausea and a rapid pulse. With these tips, we wish all a happy and health summer! Sincerely, Jill Thornton If you want to stay up to date on news and happenings in the community, go online to like Heritage Senior Living on Facebook and follow us on Twitter (@Heritage_Senior). The Heritage Senior Living Mission: To provide the highest standard while protecting, cherishing, and dignifying the knowledge, value, and joy of our respected residents.

2 w June is Alzheimer s and Brain Awareness Month so it s the perfect time to talk about this common, yet difficult disease. Alzheimer s is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. In fact, Alzheimer s kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. Early diagnosis is key, both for obtaining treatment and planning for the future. Here are a few signs to watch for: You forget recently learned information and increasingly A Message from the Wellness Nurse Alzheimer s and Brain Awareness Month need to rely on memory aids like Post-It notes. You have trouble with tasks like paying monthly bills, following a familiar recipe or driving to a familiar location. You forget where you are or how you got there. You have trouble following or joining conversations or often repeat yourself. You experience mood or personality changes and become confused or anxious. Mary Radtke Wellness Director If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, don t ignore them. See a doctor for a full evaluation. A Message from Culinary Finding Protein in Unlikely Places Getting your daily value of protein doesn t have to include eating meat. In fact, plant-based proteins are becoming more and more common (take, for instance, plant-based burgers), and they re a great option for both vegetarians and those seeking a healthier or more sustainable diet. Here are some high-protein foods you may want to work into your diet instead of (or in addition to) meat: Soy products are a great source of protein. This includes tofu, tempeh (fermented soy beans) and edamame, which each contain over 8 grams of protein per ½ cup. Lentils contain plenty of protein, as well as fiber, iron and potassium. Chickpeas contain around 7.25 grams per ½ cup and are great roasted or as hummus (which is a great alternative to butter on sandwiches). Pam Berg Culinary Director Peanuts and almonds are a great source, as are peanut and almond butters. But be careful to avoid butters with added sugars. Our Quality Promise to You Our quality promise starts with commitment. Heritage Senior Living is committed to listening to YOU. Got an idea? A suggestion? We want to hear it. Quality matters so we appreciate your ideas and input. Whether you are an employee, a resident, a family member or a visitor, let us know. us at: quality@heritageal.com

3 Staff Updates Welcome Mary, our new Wellness Director Please welcome Mary, RN, our new wellness director! Mary started in mid-may and has been enjoying getting to know each resident. Mary is from Star Prairiem Wisconsin. She has been a nurse for over 20 years. She has experience working in a longterm care facility, as well as in hospice. Mary has four grown children and four grandchildren. In her spare time she enjoys swimming and gardening. Make sure to say hi and introduce yourself to Mary when you see her! Mary Radtke Wellness Director A Message from Life Enrichment June is National Dairy Month June is National Dairy Month, and in Wisconsin we take that seriously! This month our residents will learn fun facts about national cheese day, and cheese Emily Davidson curds, along with Life Enrichment going on a farm ride Director outing and a trip to the farmer s market. On Thursday, June 14, we will be enjoying a picnic at Irvine Park, where we will see the awesome animals and enjoy a Wisconsin favorite ice cream! Make sure to celebrate National Dairy Month at your own home! Here s a fun recipe to get your dairy month started on the right foot! Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream Cake Strawberry shortcake is the quintessential summer dessert. Strawberries reach their peak in June and adding Wisconsinchurned ice cream takes this cake to new heights. For this recipe, we'll need two flavors of ice cream: strawberry and vanilla. This mammoth dessert is made in FIVE layers: a vanilla cookie crust followed by a layer of strawberry ice cream, pound cake, fresh strawberry sauce and vanilla ice cream. (It's SIX layers if you include the recommended finishing dollop of whipped cream.) This semihomemade ice cream cake is seriously simple yet impressive.
