1 Alberta Deaf News September 2014 Message from the Editor: The days are growing cooler and nights are starting earlier that can only mean one thing. It s almost the end of construction season, and winter will be here soon. It s quite interesting that Alberta has only two seasons while the rest of the world has four! More seriously, the fall season is traditionally a busy one in the Alberta Deaf community. Kids go back to school, volunteers return from vacation, annual meetings and elections come up, and events start popping up all over the calendar. And I ve got all that information for you here in this issue! Don t forget that this is the time of year where membership fees typically come due a form for EAD/CAD membership is included here. I would like to thank all the people who have given me useful feedback over the past two years on how to improve the readability of ADN for all readers. I m always open to feedback on how I can continue improving ADN. You can contact me any time at deafalberta@gmail.com with such feedback or any questions about ADN operations. Damian Karl ADN Editor

5 *Calvin's message* Summer might be almost over, but there is a lot to look forward to in our community this coming fall. Autumn always brings vibrant and colorful energy among the trees and all around us. As promised, the EAD Board Election will be held on September 8th at the EAD General meeting for selecting our new executive board and directors. We hope to see new faces with your unique ideas and various leadership approaches to bring excitement and positive changes to our community. Also, our EAD members want to thank those who will be leaving their positions on the EAD Board as they served greatly with contributing endless time and dedication to our community. Each one of you will be missed, but we hope to see you around our Deaf community as valuable members. *Canadian Association Of the Deaf's AGM* The Canadian Association of the Deaf's Annual General Meeting was held in Fredericton, New Brunswick. I was a representative for EAD to attend the meeting on August 1 & 2. Several topics were discussed at the meeting, they are as follows: - Anti-Spam Law - Social Enterprise - Deaf Youth Camping - Bylaws - Adding a new position called thematic director - Canada Deaf Expo 2017 in Edmonton - Canada Deaf 55+ Games 2017 in Edmonton

6 *Deaf Youth Camp* The Canada Deaf Youth Camp had their Open House on July 31, just one hour away from Fredericton. The scenery was so beautiful, as the camp was set by a lake with birds and creatures that called it home. The camp had 47 Deaf Youth campers, 6 of which were from Edmonton. I felt so delighted to see so many young Deaf people who are highly capable of bringing leadership to the Deaf communities all across Canada. They bring their own ideas, which are different in this new generation which is strongly centered around technology, social media and modern politics. I strongly believe that we should continue to give our support towards the Canadian Deaf Youth Leadership Camp as this is where leadership within ourselves is recognized and grown. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Justyna Grela, as she was elected for CDYLC President. *Community Initiatives Program* EAD is working on re-applying for the Community Initiatives Program (CIP) and trying to open up a position for an Administrative Assistant to work with our Directors of the EAD Board and the Deaf community. *Casino* Are you ready for some exciting news? EAD has received more than $80,000 from the casino fund-raising event, and with that it brings new projects to continue with EAD's improvements and ensure financial stability for the next few years. As you remember, EAD spent $200,000 for the main floor renovation and over $100,000 for new pavement, new furnaces, and hot water tanks. EAD is so fortunate to be able to handle its financial budget wisely. *EAD's Annual Banquet* EAD's Annual Banquet will be held on October 4th at the Edmonton Association of the Deaf community centre. The announcement with all the details will be coming soon.

7 *Corn Roast Festival* Four partner organizations (ACSD, AAD, ADSA and EAD) will host the Corn Roast Festival on September at EAD s community centre. Please mark this date on your calendar Don't worry about the bad luck number, you know that 13 actually has the most good luck. Can't wait for fresh sweet corn - yummy!!! *Membership Mandatory* Patrons of Handtalk bar who regularly attend Handtalk Bar on Fridays will be prompted to have EAD or CAD membership which will be mandatory due to us having applied for a special operating license for Handtalk bar to remain open from the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission. EAD membership forms will be available at the Handtalk Bar to fill out on the spot. *Handtalk Bar Bartenders* We are looking for individuals who are interested to be part of the Handtalk bar team as a bartender. At each shift, the bartenders will get a honorarium fee of $25.00 plus any tips earned. We would love to bring someone to the team who is able to spread excitement, positivity and fun to Handtalk Bar's Friday social nights. *Election* The Board of Directors election will be held on September 8 during the general meeting. EAD is looking forward to having new faces, bright minds and enthusiasm involved within the Board. Remember, even if you have had no prior experience, please feel welcome to be a part of the team. We will always help one another out as you go on your new journey on the EAD Board. If you are not able to attend the meeting, please contact me if you are interested to be part of the new EAD Board of Directors. *Membership* EAD memberships can be renewed to start on September 1st, 2014 through August 31, You can purchase your new membership at EADcc or you can contact our EAD membership director to pay by cash or cheque.
