1 Spring /Summer 2017 Newsletter The Alberta Cultural Society of the Deaf continues to promote a positive image of Deaf people, their culture and their heritage through the following exciting events planned for the spring/summer of We are hosting a special Lasagna Dinner in support of the Canadian Deaf Women's Conference 2017 in Edmonton on Saturday April 8 th. Come enjoy a delicious Lasagna dinner, as well as an auction and fun entertainment, in support of this great event. The cost of the dinner is $ Buy your ticket through Shauna Durston, Victoria Meusel, ACSD Administrative Assistant or Sandra Reid. In April, Mari Klassen is returning to Edmonton to present a workshop on the Signing Naturally Units 7-12 textbooks. The 3 day workshop will take place at Alberta School for the Deaf on April th. Please check the to register. We are working hard toward our ASL immersion events this summer. The Edmonton ASL immersion will happen on July 3-7th, We will be re-introducing ASL Immersion to Calgary this year on the week of August th, Help us spread the word by letting family, friends, and co-workers know that they can benefit richly from this fun-filled event! The ACSD continues to welcome volunteers and any feedback/ideas for events. Our board members invite you to sit down and talk with them about any ideas or suggestions to culturally enrich our Deaf Alberta community. 2 Both of these men involve and volunteer for the Deaf Community for the numerous of years: v C.D.S.A board (President, Board of Director) v A.D.S.A board v Deaf Canada Conference 2008 committee v Deaf Alberta Expo 2015 C.A.D. s 80 th Anniversary Banquet Coordinator v C.A.D. Strategic Committee v Canadian Delegate for Deaflympics v Former Deaf camper at Canadian Deaf Youth Leadership Camp (CDYLC) v Former Deaflympics Speedskater v Parliamentary Law v 1 st Deaf Pharmacist across Canada v Clark was a treasurer for CAD from 2009 to 2013 and he was always involved, supporting and he s running around the events in Calgary. v Clark is a treasurer for ACSD from 2008 to present (8 years). He running forth to Edmonton and back to Calgary to make sure that ACSD events were going smooth such as ASL Immersion, ASL Film in both Calgary and Edmonton, Deaf Deaf World in Both Calgary and Edmonton, ordering all ASL resources. v Clark was a treasurer for Alberta Hands & Voices Organization v He always baked all the goodies and sold so that proceeds went to specific events. He is always found in the kitchen. v He is always volunteer in all types of events in Calgary Edmonton. He is best at everything volunteer and contribute his time to Deaf community in both Calgary and Edmonton. 2

3 First Session on Saturday, March 4 and Second Session on March 11. Eight participants took two sessions of Wire Contour Handshape art class with Carly Winter who is the Art Teacher at Alberta School for the Deaf last March 4 and 11. She showed us steps of using wire techniques by practising first with drawing handshapes and shaping wire into names before putting on canvas. It was a wonderful experience and we enjoyed every minutes of it. Many thanks to Carly! 3

10 Alberta Cultural Society of the Deaf has been granted a casino fundraiser by Alberta Gaming Licensing Commission (AGLC) and we require volunteers to work a shift this year This is a very important fundraiser which provides critical funding to enhance Alberta Cultural of the Deaf projects and services. Your support is an essential for the success of this fundraiser and many volunteers are required to make it happen. The casino will be held on May 27 & 28, 2017 at the Casino Yellowhead located in West-end. We are required to fill the position of General Managers, Bankers, Cashiers, Count Room Supervisor, Count Room Staff, and Chip Runners. These keys positions must be filled by volunteers. Signing up for one shift (or two) will make a difference in Alberta Cultural Society of the Deaf s projects for years to come. There are many shifts to choose from, so please be generous with your time and let us know your availability. Over the two-day period we are required to fill over 40 positions to qualify for this casino. Thank you for your willingness to work as a team It may be even fun! If you have a preference of a position you would like to fill, please indicate this also.
