1 Alberta Deaf News December 2015 Message from the Editor: It s holiday season again! The weather has been surprising cooperative so far aside from the conditions being perfect for icy roads and sidewalks this month get to wherever you re going safely, as it s hard to properly enjoy the holidays if you re nursing broken bones or bruises! This month has been relatively quiet at ADN, but the future calendar is fast filling up for what I expect will be a busy holiday season and start to Make sure you take some time to relax with your loved ones in your home with the hot beverage of your choice create some new holiday memories this year! 2 Greetings to all Deaf Albertans and Deaf community members! This report will be my final submission for ADN as your outgoing AAD President and undoubtedly, it has been my sincere pleasure and honour to serve and promote the best interests and needs of the Deaf community in Alberta for the past four years. I feel the time is right to pass the torch of AAD over to Calvin Novak as our President-elect since I need my full energy/efforts to maximize my utmost focus overseeing the current AAD MegaEvents 2017 until August At the same time, I would act as AAD Past President supporting Calvin and his new AAD board through advices and referrals/suggestions for the next 2 years. Relating to the AAD's very recent AGM/Board election at EADCC on Saturday, November 14th, the final results of the board election for the 2-year term of were recorded as follows; Calvin Novak President Shauna Durston Vice President Connor Yuzwenko Martin Secretary Roni Mc Carthy Treasurer Crystal Jones Director at large Andrea Scott Director at large Symen Tjeerdsma Director at large Kyle Badree Acting EAD President/Director at large (till May 2016) Cindy Pilz CAD President/Director at large (till June 2017) Relating to the huge news from our federal - provincial - municipal levels of government, we all have been made fully aware and updated about 25,000 refugees from Syria moving to Canada partially by December 2015 /February As of today, I am still wondering how many Deaf refugees will be screened and accepted to move and live in our beloved country of Canada. So far, there will be around 3,000 refugees coming to Alberta. Let's wait and see how things turn out from now on. I am enjoying learning more about Trudeau's quote of "sunny ways" - think positive since it would be a wonderful spirit for all of us! I would like to share 4 key messages with you all as follows; 1) Our special note of Thanks & Appreciation to our two wonderful gentlemen volunteers; Brent Novodvorski and Bill Rodgers as our Vice President/Recording Secretary and Treasure respectively for the past four years. 3 2) Following an excellent comment from Charmaine Letourneau during AAD s elections, I am in full agreement with her that we all need to be very considerate and appreciative of our present - future volunteers from our Deaf community in Alberta and from now on, we need to sign Thank You to Deaf volunteers for their respective duty/responsibilities on various organization boards or project committees to carry on our behalf in order to promote the well-being of Deaf Albertans. Handwaves for Charmaine. 3) We all need to be open-minded and refreshed to use "sunny ways" to work together and give your full supports for AAD's new board, AAD MegaEvents 2017 committee/team and future projects undertaken by AAD new board instead of using any kind of negativism and crab theory among ourselves. 4) My sincere Thanks/Appreciation to our 3 wonderful AAD staff contractors; Damian Karl as ADN Editor, Imran Hakamali as ADN Vlogger and Joachim Lapiak as AAD Webmaster for your excellent service and efforts toward your respective work during my AAD Presidency.
