3 Newsletter 26 July 2018 A Big welcome to Adrian, Phoenix, Mace, Aayla, Nirvana, Ell-Rose and Yusra who joined us this week.nau mai, haere mai ki te kura o Rawiri. School Hours 8.15am Pupils may enter school 8.55am School begins 11:00am Morning Interval 12.30pm Lunch 1.30pm Afternoon Session 3.00pm School day ends Please phone the office by 2.20pm with any afternoon notices for your child. THIS IS IMPORTANT so we have time to get the messages to classrooms. Children are encouraged to arrive at school between 8:30-8:45am so that they can settle and get ready for the start of school at 8:55am. Absent/Late Children Please telephone before 9:00am if your child is going to be absent from school. Or contact the school in advance to let us know the days that your child is going to be away. Phone: and leave a message. In line with ministry policy we do need to know the reason your child is away. If your child is not at school, and we are not sure why, someone from the office will give you a call. Late to School If your child is late for school, they need to come to the office and sign in before going to their class. Signing Children out of School If you are taking your child out of school for any reason, please sign them out at the office prior to collecting them from the classroom. We were pleased to welcome our refreshed and happy students back to school on Monday after their well-deserved holiday. We have a full and exciting programme of learning ahead. See our term calendar of events included with this newsletter to keep you informed. Reporting to Parents Mid Year Progress Reports On Monday your child s Mid-Year Progress Report will be available through our school website. This can be accessed through any digital device including, smart phones and tablets to laptops and desktop PC s. Details on how you can login to the portal will also be sent home Monday, and instructional videos will be available on our school website. This style of reporting is moving from the typical report parents have experienced in the past. Through this website you will find a range of evidence, including images, video, and audio that allows you to see how your child is achieving their goals and their next steps for learning, as well as a General Comment statement. Over the course of the next two terms we will be adding features to the online portal that allow you to see how your child is progressing through the New Zealand Curriculum. Keep an eye out on Monday for a special notice with further details. Please note: If you are unable to access a device, times will be made available at school to use a computer or a limited printed version can be sent home. Feedback At the conclusion of Student Led Conferences we will be seeking feedback from our parent community regarding our reporting cycle to date (including our Term 1 Whakawhanaungatanga - Getting to know our learners evening) which will contribute to our future direction for reporting. Student Led Conferences Student Led Conferences will be held on Tuesday 7 th August and Thursday 9 th August. These will be run differently from previous years and we have included with this newsletter an insert explaining how they will work, and how you may book your conference. We look forward to seeing you there. Raising Your Grandchildren Morrinsville Community House is aware of a number of grandparents in our community who are raising their grandchildren. This care-giving situation can come with a variety of challenges as well as rewards. It can sometimes feel as if you are alone as you navigate parenting a second-time around! We would like to support this group of caregivers in our community by offering to host an initial coffee group/meeting. The group would be an informal way to meet others in a similar situation, share ideas, and connect with organisations and services. If this is of interest to you please do let us know by either ing us at info@mvch.org.nz or by phoning

4 Why a Student Led Conference? 2018 Student Led Conferences Student led conferences are a formal chance for students to take the lead and share their learning successes with their parents/whanau. This form of empowerment encourages students to be accountable and proud of their learning, supported by the teacher What the research says for the focus to be kept on learning and the ownership of the learning with the child, then the best person to talk about the learning is the learner Michael Absolum, Clarity in the Classroom (2006) What is a Student Led Conference? a specific time for a student to share aspects of their learning with their whanau A time when the student as the owner of the learning talks about their learning and the parents ask the questions and do the listening the teacher is their for support / facilitate the conversation How does this work?: Conferences can last up to 20 minutes. You do not have to stay this long if you child has finished sharing his/her learning. Two or three student led conferences will be held at the same time in your child s classroom. Each child will have a basic agenda that they will follow. You may be involved in a variety of activities during the time - looking at examples of learning, doing an activity to support learning talking about goals and what your child, you and the teacher might do to support these goals, looking at learning around the classroom. At some time during your conference, your child s teacher will spend some time with you. This time will allow the teacher to expand on the information your child has shared with you or for you to clarify something if necessary. What will I need to do to support my child? Before the conference: Book a time using or by contacting the office.

5 On the conference day: Come - with your child Listen - your child will do most of the talking Your job: Prompt to support your child if necessary (some prompt cards will/may be provided in the classroom) Enjoy the opportunity to see your child in their key learning environment Celebrate your child s progress to date After the conference: Continue to celebrate your child s successes and support their goals. Important things to remember: Your child will run this conference not you, not the teacher! Your child must be here. As part of their regular learning, all students have been putting considerable time and energy into preparing for this. If you cannot attend, please arrange for another significant adult in your child s life to come to the conference. The conference is about learning not behaviour or social issues. (If you or the teacher have concerns here, discussions should already have been held). The focus remains on the learner if there are no distractions from pre schoolers or sibling present. It would be unfair to all students in the room to have any distractions as they share their learning. The student-led conference should be a positive experience for all especially your child. If after the conference you have any questions or concerns please arrange a mutually suitable time with the class teacher to discuss them. How to book your Student Led Conferences Conference Days & Times are: Tuesday 7 th August 3.30pm 6.30pm Thursday 9 th August 3.30pm 6.10pm Parents can book online at Click on Make a Booking at the top of the page and enter the event code hztv9 to book in a time that suits you. Senior school parents need to book your conference with your child s Literacy Teacher not PC Teacher. Your child will know who this is. If you are still unsure phone the school office and they can help you. If you are unable to book online please phone/ or come in to the office and we can book your conference for you. Phone or office@davidst.school.nz

6 Basketball The Morrinsville Miniball Basketball competition has begun this term. To keep up to date with the times of your child's games, please check the Morrinsville Basketball Association page on Facebook or our own David Street School Facebook page. Once we get the draw we will also include it in our school newsletter. Please remember when visiting the Events Centre that the students are representing the school so we expect them to be displaying the David Street School values while having a fun time playing. Thank you DSS and those families that supported the Morrinsville Intermediate year 8A netball team at the skills session last term. The money raised will help with the costs associated with the team attending AIMS games in September. It was lovely to see so many girls out there developing their netball skills. Sharon Bryant Netball With the support of Mother Earth Future FERNS coordinators/coaches, Linley McMillan and Tash Leigh, Morrinsville Netball Centre are excited to confirm that they will be hosting 3 weeks of extended skill session!! 4pm-5pm. Year 5 players will further build on the skills they have learnt throughout the season and finish each week with a 6v6 game. While Year 6 players work on their skills and develop their knowledge around the 7v7 game format, helping to prepare them for next season.
