Mr Hortle reminded us how important it is for our safe, supportive school culture to be respectful and to be kind and speak kindly. I reminded students that to achieve their dreams, they need to put in their best efforts now; that big adventures and dreams happen with hard work, preparation and perseverance. Last week the school was visited by an external review panel of principals. They were looking at our strengths and how we could improve. The panel spent the day observing classes and talking to staff, parents and students. Some of their comments were: Students also spoke highly of the commitment of their teachers and of their willingness to give them extra assistance when this was required. The school should be commended for the work that has been undertaken to progressively embed formative assessment practices in teaching and learning activities. It is providing students with a better understanding of what they need to do to improve.. Given the current excellent work being undertaken by teachers and high staff morale, the school is very well placed for further growth Issue No May 2017 The panel also commented on areas for improvement. Many were quite specific, such as purchasing a communication app and running more frequent student forums, and we will consider them as a school. Clarence is a great school community. We work together to offer students extensive, quality learning experiences and our students respond by doing their best in all of their endeavours. Mary Maher PS I will be taking 3 months leave from next week. In the interim there will be an acting Principal in this role. All the best for the winter months and I look forward to returning in spring. School Association The next meeting of the school association is on Wednesday 7 June. This will start with the AGM and be followed by a short meeting. New members, particularly our year 7 parents, are welcome to attend. Year 10 Parent Information Evening A year 10 Parent Information Night will be held on Wednesday 7 June in the main drama room to discuss the Work Skills Program and transition. 2 Year 10 Transition The year 10 transition program commenced on Monday 15 May with all students attending Rosny College for tours of the facility. Our students were then treated to a performance of the Rosny College musical Hairspray. After the show former CHS students Izzy, Tessa, Emily and Tom spoke about how exciting, challenging and rewarding their time in the production was and how it offered something for everyone. Amazing Artwork Sarah-May Boret-Surtees completed the above detailed and accurate observation drawing. Sarah s artist statement- I did a pencil drawing of Daniel Howell in art after I finished the rest of my work. It took me a few art lessons to finish. I made the circle using a plate and I used a 2B pencil for most of this piece and a 6B pencil in the really dark areas in the back ground. Using tonal contrast making the background dark brings out the person. And fine details on the face and shirt showed different shading techniques. I shaded a lot with my finger leaving it metallic black after each lesson. This took a lot of rubbing out and drawing over the top because I wasn t happy with it. When I was finally happy with it I sprayed it with a sealant spray so it wouldn t smudge. I am very happy with the shading on the face and the hair.

3 Homunculus Theatre with Clint Bolster Recently many students across all grades had fun with a professional actor and comedian, Clint Bolster. Clint worked on physical theatre and movement and one group even got to work with masks. Clint taught the students how body language can be as expressive as speech. Science News 7SCC students are using their knowledge of small machines to construct gears that have a mechanical advantage. 9SCA Students have conducted experiments in energy efficiency and are now creating posters to display their results.

4 Inter House Cross Country Congratulations to all students who took part in the inter house cross country on Tuesday 23 May. Competitors were met with cool, dry weather as they pushed hard for a personal best time and a place in the inter high cross country team. Please see the second last page of this newsletter for results.

5 Year 7 Morning Teas To celebrate and share their learning with their family, our year 7 students, joined together with their peer supporters, teachers and families, enjoyed a wonderful morning tea prepared by the students. This special occasion is an important highlight of the Wellbeing program and provides a chance to further develop and share the important relationships between families, students and the school. Our thanks to the music staff and students from the training band who provided the entertainment.

6 Building Relationships Peer Support Program Year 7 student Lachie J has two peer supporters Jack S and Jack S!! Lachie says that the transition program at the end of last year highlighted how different high school is from primary school and having peer supporters definitely made it easier. Peer supporters helped organise and run the Year 7 Creating Connections Day and made it really fun. Lachie said he really enjoyed the team building activities - water activities, plank walking and crate standing to name just a few. Lachie also shared that Jack and Jack helped him with his organisation and problem-solving and worked through one issue with him that happened at school. He said that he sought advice from the two Jacks who gave him some strategies which really helped. From the peer supporters perspective, Jack and Jack both say it is great to be able to build relationships with the younger students and they remember when they were in year 7 just how reassuring it was to have friends in the senior school. It was also a great way to gain valuable insight into what life was like for year 10 students and they asked questions about what they could look forward to in the years ahead. Last week each year 7 class held a morning tea to share their learning and to recognize the important connections they have between school and home. Inviting their peer supporters and their families to attend was a wonderful way to share and celebrate and Lachie enjoyed hosting his mum and Jack and Jack.

7 CHS Uniform Shop Our uniform shop is open each Tuesday 2.30pm to 3.30pm and Thursday 2.30pm to 3.30pm Please present to the front office on arrival to purchase uniform at the above times. Uniform order forms are available from the office or the schools website if the opening times are not suitable for you.
